In 1935, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a country house for the Kaufmann family over a small stream in Western Pennsylvania. He named it Fallingwater. It, perhaps more than any other building, exemplifies Wright's concept of 'Organic Architecture,' which seeks to harmonize people and nature by integrating the building, the site, and its inhabitants into a unified whole. And today, the iconic image of the house over the waterfall, remains a testament to a great architect working at the height of his career. Both the DVD and the iPad app feature an interactive tour. Interior Design of A Midcentury Residence
MID-CENTURY MODERN PERIOD Mid-Century modern is an architectural, interior and product design form that generally describes mid-20th century developments in modern design, architecture, and urban development from roughly 1933 to 1965. The term was coined in 1983 by Cara Greenberg for the title of her ground-breaking book, _Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s_ (Random House), celebrating the style which is now recognized by scholars and museums worldwide as a significant design movement. MID_CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE Mid-century architecture was a further development of Frank Lloyd Wright's principles of organic architecture combined with many elements reflected in the International and Bauhaus movements. Mid-century modernism, however, was much more organic in form and less formal than the International Style. Scandinavian architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature. Like many of Wright's designs, Mid-Century architecture was frequently employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America's post-war suburbs. This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows and open floor-plans with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in. Many Mid-century houses utilized then-groundbreaking post and beam architectural design that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs, with an emphasis placed specifically on targeting the needs of the average American family. Examples of residential Mid-Century modern architecture are frequently referred to as the California Modern style. Pioneering builder and real estate developer Joseph Eichler was instrumental in bringing Mid-Century Modern architecture ("Eichler Homes") to subdivisions in the Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay region of California and select housing developments on the east coast. George Fred Keck, Henry P. Glass and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created Mid-Century Modern residences in the Chicago area. Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House is extremely difficult to heat or cool, while Keck and Glass were pioneers in the incorporation of passive solar features in their houses to compensate for their large glass windows. THE CALIFORNIA PROJECT THEME: INDUSTRIAL At this Project we have created spacious, neutral settings, that offer a stage for inspired living. Designed for living - the open plan spaces with ambience of a contemporary home reflects the sophistication and austerity of the owner. The Architecture was influenced by Mid-Century Modern style, introduced by the organic Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Residence was built in the 1960.The goal was to preserve the original idea of the Architect, while bringing the look into the present time. The overall color scheme is cement soft sage grays. The cement finish was used all around with its different shades and textures. The use of stainless steel creates a somber harmony with to the charcoal leather look ceramic tile, the warm teak stain of all the cabinetry. This composition was possible, due to the abundance of windows walls, allowing day light in the residence from virtually every direction. A natural rainforrest slab, with exquisite design was installed as a focal point of the entire living room. The organic amalgam of interior and exterior was emphasized natures presence, in the unique Brazilian rainforest slab of marble. The finish of this was left sanded only so the natural formations were emphasized. Frank Lloyd Wright against modern cities
February 19, 1958 From the Forum Network's lecture titled "Frank Lloyd Wright - Creative Mind: The Architect as Creator" "New York is the biggest mouth in the world. It appears to be prime example of the herd instinct, leading the universal urban conspiracy to beguile man from his birthright (the good ground), to hang him by his eyebrows from skyhooks above hard pavement, to crucify him, sell him, or be sold by him." "Out of Americas rugged individualism captained by rugged captains of our rugged industrial enterprises we have gradually evolved a crude, vain power: plutocratic capitalism. Not true capitalism. I believe this is entirely foreign to our own original idea of democracy." "America needs no help to Broadacre City. It will haphazard build itself. Why not plan it?" "Inevitably, there will develop a new form of community life, but just what it will be except as Broadacre City tentatively outlines it as free to grow, who can say? Not I. Who is going to say how humanity will eventually be modified by all these spiritual changes and physical advantages, sound and vision coming through solid walls to men, each aware of anything in or of the world he lives in without lifting a finger, making it unnecessary to go anywhere unless it is a pleasure to go. The whole psyche of humanity is changing and what that change will ultimately bring as future community I will not prophecy. It is already greatly changed."

Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum
Introduction from the documentary film "Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum." Story: To house Solomon Guggenheim's collection of modern art, Frank Lloyd Wright envisioned a powerful spatial experience, one that would revolutionize the relationship between people and art. The result, the iconic Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, utilized stunning innovation in form and Wright s concept of organic architecture to radically transform the museum experience. It has often been said that the greatest work in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum is the building itself. What makes the Guggenheim an architectural and cultural icon? How did Wright conceive of and develop his ideas for the building s coiling ramp and magnificent rotunda? And how does it continue to challenge our collective understanding of art museums even into the 21st century? Neil Levine, world-renowned architectural historian and professor at Harvard University, takes us on an engaging and personal tour of the building and its history. The tour is fun, provocative, and will leave you with a clear understanding of how 'The Guggenheim' has forever changed our assumptions of what an art museum can be. Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio
Introduction to the film "Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio." Beauty, Wright believed, stands paramount among all aspects of life. He sought it in everything from music, poetry, and sculpture, to his own environments. He conceived "organic architecture" -- an innovative philosophy of building appropriate to time, appropriate to place, and appropriate to man -- as a basis for creating beauty in his life and the lives of his clients. Wright embarked on this approach with the first residence and workplace he designed for himself: the Home and Studio in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. For two decades, it served not only as his own family residence but an experimental laboratory where he envisioned and tested many of the basic principles that he would develop throughout his career, principles now synonymous with organic architecture. The Home and Studio represents a critical link in fully appreciating Wright's body of work. 2 Disk Special Edition DVD (movie + interactive tour) on sale at http://store.in-dmedia.com

Vivanta by Taj - Whitefield, Bangalore by WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design
Project: Vivanta by Taj -- Whitefield Location: Whitefield, Bangalore Client: The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) Principal design architect: WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design Scope: Architecture, Interiors, Landscape Collaborator: Spazzio Design Architecture (New Delhi, India), responsible for authority matters, design coordination and management with local consultants and project administration during construction. Date of completion: January 2009 Area: 19,638 square metres This video illustrates the massing, elevation and circulation concepts generated from the mobius strip. The Vivanta by Taj - Whitefield adopts a site-specific landscape strategy that plays on relationships between interior and exterior spaces and embraces Bangalore's culture and climate. Public and private spaces interweave in an endless promenade of spatial experiences with culturally distinctive cinematic qualities that allude to the circling and twisting of traditional Indian dance forms. The resulting seamless experience dissolves the boundaries between the inside and outside of the hotel and encourages casual interactions and exchanges between hotel guests and locals within its public promenade. Symbolically, it expresses the borderless potential for freedom without concern for spatial segmentation based on social and cultural status. Constraints prescribed by the low height restrictions and the high site coverage in the urban design guidelines were resolved through a 'landscraper' (as opposed to 'skyscraper') concept maximizing every plane. To expand the spatial experience of site coverage of public areas, the site's ground plane was conceptually manipulated into a mobius strip that would constitute the public podium promenade of the hotel. The twists and folds of the strip extend the perception of space. As the landscape is introduced back to the folded ground plane, the podium seemingly dematerialises, blurring the distinction between architecture, interior and landscape. The three-storey room block then extrudes from the ground plane, hovers above and flexes its way around the site, lifting its way mid-air to enclose 200 rooms within its form. *** WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design is an international multidisciplinary design firm based in Singapore providing design consultancy services for architecture, interior design, landscape, master planning and urban design. Projects span India, China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The firm is not limited to a particular design style or direction. Instead, it is committed to principles of contextually and culturally sensitive designs informed by the landscape and the urban development of the locality. Research- and process-driven, stylistically inclusive and diverse, the firm aims to craft spaces of experiential richness and imbued meaning which enrich the rituals of daily life.

Sean McCracken & David M Parker Architect of Laguna Beach Real Estate
Sean McCracken & David M Parker Architect of Laguna Beach Real Estate I am an architect in private practice in Laguna Beach, California. I am a design oriented architect and I specialize in high-end custom homes and additions. No project is too large or too small if the creative opportunities are there. I have designed homes in many different styles over the years, but in my opinion the best kind of architecture for living is one that goes beyond style and becomes unique to the site, landscape, and to the owners personal needs and desires. This is the essence of Organic Architecture. Architecture should be for the people who use and enjoy it, and it should enhance and enrich the life of the user. Some of my influences are John Lautner, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, Bart Prince, and Santiago Calatrava. Stone houses and almost no electricity
Valle Bavona is surrounded by hydroelectric power plants, but in the 1950s its inhabitants rejected electricity. Keeping away from modernity has been a plus for the valley. Since it had no electricity, no new buildings were constructed and the valley retained much of its authenticity. (Raffaella Rossello, swissinfo.ch)
