Was Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural vision sustainable?

08:11
In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings through his sustainable and green architecture in his designs for Fallingwater and Usonian homes. Specifically, I dig into his ideas of organic architecture, Usonia, and Broadacre City, and look at buildings like Fallingwater in order to come to grips with the balance Frank Lloyd Wright strikes between a love for nature (and green living) and a desire for embracing new technologies. Organic Architecture, Fractals, and Ball Pits!

06:11
A fun look at organic architecture set against the backdrop of lush ocean cliffs, vibrant ball pits, and fractal trees. Organic architecture was a style of modern architecture lead by the great Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 20th century. Taking a closer look into the hidden geometry of nature, we find that organic architecture may have greatly benefited from the study of fractals such as the fibonacci sequence and golden section, as these irregular geometries are found throughout all of nature. Looking into contemporary examples, the ambitious architecture of Eugene Tsui is then described, which directly takes forms from nature, such as fibonacci spirals, and applies them to create designs that are theoretically impervious to earthquakes, hurricanes, fire, and other natural forces and lateral loads.

Sketch like an Architect (Techniques + Tips from a Real Project)

Follow along as I work through a few rough sketches for a new project; I discuss the key style points and techniques you can use to develop your own architectural sketching style. Each sketching vignette includes many tips, but broadly they fall under the following headings: 1) Simply your toolset: fewer tools = fewer decisions 2) Start small: move quickly, be less precise, less precious 3) Line work: architectural sketching is a line art, not a fine art 4) Annotations: helps create a layered esthetic, describes things you're not able to easily show 5) Media + Implements: how changing these from time to time can spur new ideas. 6) Practice: the one thing guaranteed to improve your architectural sketching technique. **Here's the link to GET INVOLVED in my NEW PROJECT: http://thirtybyforty.com/new-project // GEAR I USE // CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template ARCHITECT'S TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL ARCHITECTURE ESSENTIAL TOOLS: * http://thirtybyforty.com/archi-gear PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR: *http://thirtybyforty.com/my-photo-gear MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music #architecture #architect #architecturetutorial -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Contemporary and Classical Style of Architecture | Uneven

02:43
Residence Design Interplay Between Contemporary and Classical Style of Architecture | Uneven See Full Project: http://bit.ly/2GUPAjA See More : Kalrav Residence The residence designed for Mr Sachin Patel is a perfect example of the interplay between the contemporary and classical style of architecture. In an attempt to blur the lines between the new and the old, thus Kalrav was designed. It overlooks a lake making it a pleasurable place to live. The approach to the bungalow is through a linear driveway sided by coconut trees and landscape at sides in an organic pattern; with the flooring that integrates stones that run in a circular fashion. The exterior design incorporates earthen colours that emphasise the sobriety of the volumes. The windows on either side of the facade have been veiled with exposed brick arches and the brickwork end with a gable at the top with an intricately carved cornice. Though there has been a range of styles that have blended in the design, the symmetry of their characteristics and forms have been followed through and through.

Modeling Zaha Hadid's Grand Rabat Theatre with Blender

29:35
This is a time lapse video of Zaha Hadid Architects' modeling techniques, demonstrated with Grand Rabat Theatre and Blender. Zaha Hadid's Design process uses Maya for conceptual architectural design. Subdivision poly modeling is not widely used in the architectural field (outside of a a dozen+ practices), yet the workflow offers fantastic opportunities, offering an organic and expressive path for unleashing initial ideas, compared to Nurbs modeling. I have been inspired to demonstrate Blender's robust modeling capabilities, which can significantly aide the initial creative process, in a similar manner as Maya.

(410 m²) A House Was Building By Natural Materials, As Wood And Stone, Brazil | House Beautiful 2018

04:18
Text description provided by the architects. Idealized in neutral colors and natural materials, as wood and stone, for example, the house keeps a simple essence and elegance at the same time. We sought inspiration in contemporary architecture to create integrated environments and value the use of natural materials and coatings. "The idea was to translate the cosmopolitan life, integrated spaces, ideal to welcome people over. Besides that, we decided to add a modern atmosphere which values nature", says Otto Felix. The main intention of the project was to incorporate the external spaces into the social spaces of the house, bringing nature to the living areas. To enable this integration between spaces without losing privacy in the most intimate areas of the house, the main divisions between spaces were made through slatted wood folding doors. This way we have the option to integrate or not these spaces, according to the needs of the client. The main protagonist of the project is the volume that corresponds to the social areas of the house with the Gourmet area, Living and Dining Room. This environment is surrounded by glass panels that open completely, releasing the passage of natural light and ventilation, creating a fluid and contemporary atmosphere. The residence has also a kitchen, dining room, TV room, master suite, guest suite and service area, distributed in a private block in "L" shape, that opens outwards through the wood folding doors. Another highlight is the landscape project, which includes a biological pool skirting the gourmet área. This natural pool was the starting point for the composition of the rest of the garden, with tropical and lightness air the landscaping values the architecture in which it is inserted. The structure of the house seems to float above the pool, creating the feeling that the landscaped elements were already on site before the construction. In addition, the biological treatment does not use chemicals, allowing the residents to swim with the carps and contemplate nature. For the construction, the architect opted for the Light Steel Frame (LSF) solution, a system that doesn't require bricks and concrete, which are replaced by a galvanized steel structure covered with panels ready to receive paint and coatings. This choice made the construction cleaner and generated much less debris than traditional construction works. The choice for natural and warm materials and coatings, such as stone and wood, also provide better thermal comfort and a much greater sense of coziness. The lighting that prevails on a day-to-day basis is natural, and at night it was designed to highlight details of architecture and landscaping, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. https://www.archdaily.com/897829/of-house-studio-otto-felix Subscribe and View more here: https://goo.gl/tHjsCp Thanks for watching #tinyhouse #smallhouse #cottage #cabin #smallisbeautiful #house #home #tiny #homedesign

Stir, Blend, Disrupt: How Architects Think & What Managers Can Learn | Christos Chantzaras | TEDxTUM

16:21
Architecture is not just about buildings and construction, but the way architects think can be applied to many different fields. With their strong visual processing skills and deep understanding of complex systems, architects work at the intersection of data, design, management and behavior. Christos believes that combining design thinking (architecture) with decision thinking (management) can create more interdisciplinary solutions for challenges that cities may face in the future. Christos Chantzaras holds diplomas in both architecture and management, and has embarked on a mission to open the field of architecture for co-creation and innovation. Initially an architect and strategy consultant, he now uses experiences gained from an architecture firm environment to improve interdisciplinary collaboration within the field as a researcher and lecturer at TUM. His initiative and deep-seated belief in expanding traditional architectural thinking and applicability, is supporting the department of architecture to transform its research lab into an Architecture Research Incubator. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Amazing Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird In South Austin

02:04
Amazing Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird In South Austin Price: $525k Rare home by Frank Lloyd Wright acolyte asks $525K Austin might have overplayed its “keep it weird” hand long ago, but it can still be fun to revisit things we’ve kept that way, especially if they’re for sale. This one-story pod, now a detached condo in South Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood, was designed by local architect John Covert Watson, a onetime student of Frank Lloyd Wright’s who later moved toward a more organic style that evolved out of modernism. Watson was from an old Austin family and is credited with helping preserve the area around Hamilton Pool; more upscale and impressive examples of his organic architecture can be found in his Mushroom House in Lakeway and the Grotto Dome in West Lake Hills. Regardless of their size and location, all combine the architect’s groundbreaking formal and structural techniques with the funky, natural approach endemic to Austin and other places in the 1960s and 1970s. You know—when things were weird. Built in 1978, this structure is perhaps more humble than some of Watson’s builds, but it has the basic characteristics that continue to charm fans of his style. It’s also in a convenient, central location in a leafy neighborhood and on a corner lot across the street from Ricky Guerrero Park. Jennifer Aniston's Designer Breaks Down Jen's New Home | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest

11:51
Jennifer Aniston’s interior designer Stephen Shadley talks with Architectural Digest Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley about the 'zen' style and designs of the new home Aniston shares with husband Justin Theroux. Jennifer Aniston takes AD inside her dreamy California home high above Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston crafts a scene of pure domestic bliss with husband Justin Theroux, a spectacular midcentury house, and a trio of very happy dogs. Aniston’s latest residential project is the reimagining of a Bel Air house that was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965. The actress acquired the property in 2011, after selling her beloved Hal Levitt–designed home in L.A.’s Trousdale Estates enclave (AD, March 2010) and attempting to relocate to Manhattan—a move ultimately thwarted by the rabid paparazzi that swarmed outside her Greenwich Village apartment building. When she bought the Bel Air property, it had recently emerged from a renovation by architect Frederick Fisher, which, despite its sympathetic embrace of Jones’s vision, skewed a bit too cool and minimal for Aniston’s taste. Aniston enlisted the aid of AD100 interior designer Stephen Shadley, with whom she had collaborated on her previous L.A. home, to perform a similar alchemy in Bel Air—namely, to preserve the modernist ethos of the original scheme while softening some of its sharp lines and outfitting the interior with tactile, organic finishes and furnishings. Aniston seconds the notion, pointing to the vintage Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa, Jacques Adnet armchairs, and Mies van der Rohe daybed arranged in the living room. Aniston credits the home’s deftly layered interiors to a team effort, with important contributions by Shadley and L.A. designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth. Theroux weighed in as well. Aniston describes the centuries-spanning decor as “Old World meets New World,” a polyglot mix of hand-painted wallpaper and midcentury furniture, silk rugs and polished concrete, antique Japanese screens and Abstract Expressionist paintings. Yet for all the pedigreed pieces on display—artworks by Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, and Glenn Ligon; furnishings by Vladimir Kagan, Edward Wormley, and Arturo Pani—the real triumph rests in the harmony of the various decorative compositions within Shadley’s reconceived interior architecture. Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger reorganized the alfresco spaces as a series of interconnected outdoor rooms, terraces, and Asian-inspired pocket gardens. Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird in South Austin | Perfect Small House Design

01:40
Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird in South Austin | Perfect Small House Design Price: $525k Rare home by Frank Lloyd Wright acolyte asks $525K Austin might have overplayed its “keep it weird” hand long ago, but it can still be fun to revisit things we’ve kept that way, especially if they’re for sale. Soulful in both a sonic and emotional sense, the album explores a world of ethereal synths, live instruments, spiralling chimes, and psychedelic grooves. Genuine and uncompromising, the album hones a quality that is at once unique and alluringly familiar, much like the experience of arriving at a new place that instantly feels like home. Our booth started with a concealed rectangular rigid from with plain exterior and organic, interactive interior. This creates a different atmosphere upon entering. As this year‘s theme is “VIA”, we encompassed a tunnel with in our “Black Box”. MN couple turns grain silo into urban brewery, store & venue

20:07
Sandy and Jay Boss Febbo looked for a location to open their microbrewery, they were looking for something within their self-financed budget. They approached architect Geoffrey Warner, known for his prefab designs (WeeHouse, LightHotel) who suggested a grain bin. It was a perfect fit for the Boss Febbos who with their organic brews were dedicated to “land stewardship and farmworker health” and liked the idea of this very visible homage to the farm. Using a 42-foot-round, prefabricated, corrugated-metal grain bin, Warner cut plenty of windows and used the grain entry point as a skylight so the 1300-square-foot structure reflects the light of the day like a sundial. By using multi-functional furniture, mostly on wheels and stackable, the couple find the small space large enough for brewing, packing, tasting and events. Located in an industrial zone of St Paul, the bin, with R-28 insulation, easily weathers the Minnesota winters. Modern House Design with Open Spaces that Connect to Nature - Located in a lot surrounded by thick nature of the city of Vilnius, in Lithuania, is this fantastic residence occupying an area of 187 square meters. It was designed in 2018 by the architects M.Vroblevičius, D.Birutis, M.Dagys, and P.Vroblevičius of the architectural firm ArchLAB studio. The construction has a modern and very expressive style. A lot of attention has been devoted to complement the design with a subtle landscape, open fireplace, and wooden terraces, where you can relax listening to the sound of the water running nearby. As if that weren’t enough, you can also enjoy a the wonderful views the home has to offer. Art Nouveau Vs High Tech Buildings

06:45
Art Nouveau: Art Nouveau, ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic line and was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, and illustration. High Tech Modernism: High-tech architecture, also known as Structural Expressionism, is a type of Late Modern architectural style that emerged in the 1970s, incorporating elements of high-tech industry and technology into building design. High-tech architecture appeared as revamped modernism, an extension of those previous ideas helped by even more technological advances. This category serves as a bridge between modernism and post-modernism; however, there remain gray areas as to where one category ends and the other begins. In the 1980s, high-tech architecture became more difficult to distinguish from post-modern architecture. Some of its themes and ideas were later absorbed into the style of Neo-Futurism art and architectural movement.
