Was Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural vision sustainable?

08:11
In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings through his sustainable and green architecture in his designs for Fallingwater and Usonian homes. Specifically, I dig into his ideas of organic architecture, Usonia, and Broadacre City, and look at buildings like Fallingwater in order to come to grips with the balance Frank Lloyd Wright strikes between a love for nature (and green living) and a desire for embracing new technologies. Modeling Zaha Hadid's Grand Rabat Theatre with Blender

29:35
This is a time lapse video of Zaha Hadid Architects' modeling techniques, demonstrated with Grand Rabat Theatre and Blender. Zaha Hadid's Design process uses Maya for conceptual architectural design. Subdivision poly modeling is not widely used in the architectural field (outside of a a dozen+ practices), yet the workflow offers fantastic opportunities, offering an organic and expressive path for unleashing initial ideas, compared to Nurbs modeling. I have been inspired to demonstrate Blender's robust modeling capabilities, which can significantly aide the initial creative process, in a similar manner as Maya.

Contemporary and Classical Style of Architecture | Uneven

02:43
Residence Design Interplay Between Contemporary and Classical Style of Architecture | Uneven See Full Project: http://bit.ly/2GUPAjA See More : Kalrav Residence The residence designed for Mr Sachin Patel is a perfect example of the interplay between the contemporary and classical style of architecture. In an attempt to blur the lines between the new and the old, thus Kalrav was designed. It overlooks a lake making it a pleasurable place to live. The approach to the bungalow is through a linear driveway sided by coconut trees and landscape at sides in an organic pattern; with the flooring that integrates stones that run in a circular fashion. The exterior design incorporates earthen colours that emphasise the sobriety of the volumes. The windows on either side of the facade have been veiled with exposed brick arches and the brickwork end with a gable at the top with an intricately carved cornice. Though there has been a range of styles that have blended in the design, the symmetry of their characteristics and forms have been followed through and through.
Organic Architecture, Fractals, and Ball Pits!

06:11
A fun look at organic architecture set against the backdrop of lush ocean cliffs, vibrant ball pits, and fractal trees. Organic architecture was a style of modern architecture lead by the great Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 20th century. Taking a closer look into the hidden geometry of nature, we find that organic architecture may have greatly benefited from the study of fractals such as the fibonacci sequence and golden section, as these irregular geometries are found throughout all of nature. Looking into contemporary examples, the ambitious architecture of Eugene Tsui is then described, which directly takes forms from nature, such as fibonacci spirals, and applies them to create designs that are theoretically impervious to earthquakes, hurricanes, fire, and other natural forces and lateral loads.

AA Architects : Alvar Aalto

25:39
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, as well as a sculptor and painter. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware. Aalto's early career runs in parallel with the rapid economic growth and industrialization of Finland during the first half of the twentieth century and many of his clients were industrialists; among these were the Ahlström-Gullichsen family. The span of his career, from the 1920s to the 1970s, is reflected in the styles of his work, ranging from Nordic Classicism of the early work, to a rational International Style Modernism during the 1930s to a more organic modernist style from the 1940s onwards. His furniture designs were considered Scandinavian Modern.[3] What is typical for his entire career, however, is a concern for design as a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art; whereby he – together with his first wife Aino Aalto – would design not just the building, but give special treatments to the interior surfaces and design furniture, lamps, and furnishings and glassware. The Alvar Aalto Museum, designed by Aalto himself, is located in what is regarded as his home city Jyväskylä
Jennifer Aniston's Designer Breaks Down Jen's New Home | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest

11:51
Jennifer Aniston’s interior designer Stephen Shadley talks with Architectural Digest Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley about the 'zen' style and designs of the new home Aniston shares with husband Justin Theroux. Jennifer Aniston takes AD inside her dreamy California home high above Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston crafts a scene of pure domestic bliss with husband Justin Theroux, a spectacular midcentury house, and a trio of very happy dogs. Aniston’s latest residential project is the reimagining of a Bel Air house that was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965. The actress acquired the property in 2011, after selling her beloved Hal Levitt–designed home in L.A.’s Trousdale Estates enclave (AD, March 2010) and attempting to relocate to Manhattan—a move ultimately thwarted by the rabid paparazzi that swarmed outside her Greenwich Village apartment building. When she bought the Bel Air property, it had recently emerged from a renovation by architect Frederick Fisher, which, despite its sympathetic embrace of Jones’s vision, skewed a bit too cool and minimal for Aniston’s taste. Aniston enlisted the aid of AD100 interior designer Stephen Shadley, with whom she had collaborated on her previous L.A. home, to perform a similar alchemy in Bel Air—namely, to preserve the modernist ethos of the original scheme while softening some of its sharp lines and outfitting the interior with tactile, organic finishes and furnishings. Aniston seconds the notion, pointing to the vintage Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa, Jacques Adnet armchairs, and Mies van der Rohe daybed arranged in the living room. Aniston credits the home’s deftly layered interiors to a team effort, with important contributions by Shadley and L.A. designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth. Theroux weighed in as well. Aniston describes the centuries-spanning decor as “Old World meets New World,” a polyglot mix of hand-painted wallpaper and midcentury furniture, silk rugs and polished concrete, antique Japanese screens and Abstract Expressionist paintings. Yet for all the pedigreed pieces on display—artworks by Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, and Glenn Ligon; furnishings by Vladimir Kagan, Edward Wormley, and Arturo Pani—the real triumph rests in the harmony of the various decorative compositions within Shadley’s reconceived interior architecture. Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger reorganized the alfresco spaces as a series of interconnected outdoor rooms, terraces, and Asian-inspired pocket gardens. Amazing Two Halves House with Sociable Living Style by Moloney Architects

Amazing Two Halves House with Sociable Living Style by Moloney Architects Architects Moloney Architects Location Australia Lead Architects Mick Moloney Area 240.0 m2 Project Year 2017 Photographs Christine Francis Manufacturers Rogerseller, Euroluce, Jordana Henry, Everest Timbers, Masson for Light, The Lock & Handle, Brightgreen, Daniel Poole, Chiminees Phillipe, Plyco Two Halves House is Moloney Architects’ latest residential project. A family home that responds to its clients’ sociable living style, as well as its beautiful bushland surrounds. Named for its split monolithic architectural form, Two Halves house is distinguished by two pavilions that appear to stand alone, but in fact live hand-in-hand. Save this picture! Section 02 Section 02 “The clients wanted their internal living spaces to have a strong connection to the bush surrounds, while also providing them with privacy and a sense of seclusion,” said Moloney Architects Principal, Mick Moloney. The resulting Two Halves design addresses these dual requirements by simultaneously dividing and connecting; separating the ‘public’ open-plan living zone from the privacy and quiet seclusion of its neighbouring sleeping and bathing quarters. “The two pavilions essentially distinguish the functions of the house, splitting the public and private zones to give the main living spaces the best views and natural light access,” said Moloney. A House Spiral Garden (105 m2)| Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects & Associates | House Beautiful 2018

04:02
A House Spiral Garden (105 m2), Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects & Associates, House Beautiful 2018 Architects: Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects & associate Location: Japa Lead Architect: Ryuichi Ashizawa Area: 105.0 m2 Photographs: Kaori Ichikawa Manufacturers: Catalano, Kaldewei, Union, ADVAN Text description provided by the architects. The project is a house dedicated to a family of four who lives on the slope of Awaji Island. On the 986.54 m² site, a design that considers the temperate nature of Awaji Island as well as the family’s distinctive, nature-conscious approach to all aspects of life, was planned. In response to its’ context, the house combines locals’ timber dwelling construction with a unique form, consisting of a continuous spiral that rises towards the central space. The inner and outer walls were first clad with woven bamboo lattice, its’ walls and floors then covered with Sanwa Earth finish. The floor uses a technique called Tataki, a hard-packed earthen floor, resistant to high foot traffic consisting of earth, lime, and water, beat until solidification. In the winter, during the day the earth-covered walls and floors absorb heat from the exterior. At night the heat is released, keeping the interiors warm. During summer, due to stack effect created by the height difference between the central space and the rest of the house, wind flows from the exterior towards the center and cools the interior From the entrance, rooms are accessed by means of the main corridor. Starting from the storage, one will walk past the cloakroom, bedroom, and bathroom, leading towards the living – dining – kitchen area with glass doors to view and access the exterior garden. Walking further inside leads one to the partially enclosed central space with an operable skylight above it. Climbing the ladder leads to children’s bedroom on the loft, overlooking the living room. The roof is a spiral garden where nature rises from the earth towards the sky. Its’ spiral shape provides varying parameters such as height, sun exposure, and humidity, enabling to roof to be populated with all sorts of plants with different growth requirements. When it rains, water soaks the roof garden and flows down towards the retaining ponds. As habitats for the aquatic plants, in the summer the ponds also cool incoming wind, providing a comfortable breeze for the interiors. Aside from being fertile grounds for the herbs and trees to thrive, the landscape of the entire site was planned comprehensively as a closed cycle, which includes an energy generation system that also serves as a playground for children, complemented with an outdoor kiln, a bath, and a compost toilet. With the passing of time, the house would fuse with nature, resembling a natural organism in harmony with the environment. https://www.archdaily.com/897319/spiral-garden-ryuichi-ashizawa-architects-and-associates Subscribe and View more here: https://goo.gl/tHjsCp Thanks for watching #tinyhouse #smallhouse #cottage #cabin #smallisbeautiful #house #home #tiny #homedesign
20 STRANGEST Architecture Designs In The World

10:33
You hear all about the most breathtaking things humankind has made in the world, all our epic accomplishments--but what about if you’re curious about the weirder structures crafted by the human mind? This is the list for you. CCTV Tower This is another one of those buildings that probably aimed to look modern and abstract but it just looks distracting instead. The CCTV TOwer, also known as the CMB Headquarters in Beijing stands at a height of 768 feet or 234 meters high. It’s the fifth tallest building in the city, with 44 stories and located in the Beijing Central Business District. Completed in 2008, it went through a fire (thanks to fireworks from the Lantern Festival) the year after it opened, but as you can see, it’s still standing. 5. Aoyama Technical College Amongst the homelier and more plain buildings in Daikanyama, Japan, the Aoyama Technical College cannot be missed. Though sometimes if you’re not feeling it, you probably want to not come across this one. Below is some old wooden house, juxtaposing the college’s presence. The school opened in 1990 and as the first building from architect Makoto Sei Watanabe. Telegraph listed it as part of its 30 Ugliest Buildings countdown, so it seems this piece of art isn’t for everyone. It should be noted that Watanabe had since won many prestigious prizes and acclaim for his other work. This just happens to be his first building. 4. The Ryugyong Hotel This hotel is North Korea used to be the largest abandoned building in the world. Construction was halted in the late 80s, though it picked up 20 years later in 2008. This was mostly due to the collapse of the Soviet Union about 3 years after the project for this hotel began construction. n the shape of a pyramid and containing 105 stories, the Ryugyong Hotel is a staple of the city of Pyongyang. Some may refer to it as the Hotel of Doom. Its imposing shape contrasts to the more normal buildings around it in this mysterious capital. 3. Zizkov Television Tower If you’ve never been to Prague, you’ve at least seen pictures, right? The capital and largest city of the Czech Republic is known for its classic architecture, for its historical “European-ness.” Then you have the transmitter tower that sticks out like a sore thumb: the Zizkov Television Tower. It’s a unique shape for sure, even for a transmitter tower. It went up in 1992 after 7 years of construction. Standing at a height of 709 feet or 216 meters up to the antenna, it towers well above the older buildings in the city. To make it appear even taller, it even stands at the top of a hill. This style is what’s called “high tech architecture.” 2. The Landmark Theatre In the coastal town of Ilfracombe in Devon, England is the Landmark Theatre. It looks less like a venue and more like a power plant. Funny enough, some call the conical structures at the top by the nickname of “Madonna’s Bra.” This double conical feature has been called controversial, though it’s become a really big drawing point for people to want to visit. A Victorian building known as the Pavillion Theatre used to be in this same spot, but a fire destroyed much of it during the 80s. 1...

An Organic Modern Home With Subtle Industrial Undertones

This gorgeous 203 square meter home in Belarus uses its bright white interior as an effective canvas for a dramatic meeting between organic shapes and clean lines, plus its beautiful contrast of natural wood panels and textural industrial-style concrete cladding. The result is a space that feels undeniably fresh and modern but retains a hint of cutting urban edginess – a welcoming atmosphere with a touch of adventure. Dmitry Sheleg created the flawless visualizations below for ZROBYM Architects, leaving plenty of open space for the reader to imagine their own decorative take on this flexible interior aesthetic.

Portabello Luxury Estate - ultra modern organic architectural masterpiece

11:21
Most Amazing Portabello Luxury Estate - ultra modern organic architectural masterpiece The Portabello Estate is more than just a landmark property, it is a free flowing dream house that can almost be considered an art form complementing its natural environment. The moment you enter this personal private paradise, you understand. The elegant entry is not a door into a house; it’s a portal into a new world. Other houses, streets, and cars suddenly cease to exist. Graceful horizon pools and patios stretch ahead. To your right, flowers tumble down high cliffs to the lower level pools, fountains, and lush grass. Straight ahead, a broad, barefoot lawn overlooks the Pacific, with Catalina Island in the distance. Wide-open spaces are everywhere, yet somehow, you remain totally secluded. Desert Architecture Series #8 | Mark Sever | Scottsdale, Arizona

08:31
Mark Sever's own words - The story for my project begins with my client visiting Arizona looking for a home to purchase and to retire. Every home they wanted to see that was for sale happened to be one of my homes. (truly not that many but they only considered what was on the market that happened to be mine.) They reached out to me after seeing several of my past projects. I reviewed several lots and this is where we left it years ago. They eventually retired and reached out to me to look at a site they found. I loved it as much as they did. A cul-de-sac lot with challenges defined the program. I found a solution in designing a plan based on a small resort where guests are greeted by a grand entrance surrounded by water features, beautiful landscaping and interesting structural features. My clients love to entertain. Every program requirement was about enjoying the Arizona lifestyle while creating a resort-style environment. My program used materials that are timeless and display well and are lasting. I visit them often and every time I do, they are deeply involved in a project such as making a grand meal, and I only see clients enjoying their home. My approach to architecture and building is to encourage activities where my client does not think about the materials used in their home. The materials work for them. They employ these materials while always enjoying the experience of using them. Website - http://severgroup.com Film by Chibi Moku - http://chibimoku.com Color Grading by Thomas Stigler
Amazing Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird In South Austin

Amazing Organic Modernist Condo Keeps It Weird In South Austin Price: $525k Rare home by Frank Lloyd Wright acolyte asks $525K Austin might have overplayed its “keep it weird” hand long ago, but it can still be fun to revisit things we’ve kept that way, especially if they’re for sale. This one-story pod, now a detached condo in South Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood, was designed by local architect John Covert Watson, a onetime student of Frank Lloyd Wright’s who later moved toward a more organic style that evolved out of modernism. Watson was from an old Austin family and is credited with helping preserve the area around Hamilton Pool; more upscale and impressive examples of his organic architecture can be found in his Mushroom House in Lakeway and the Grotto Dome in West Lake Hills. Regardless of their size and location, all combine the architect’s groundbreaking formal and structural techniques with the funky, natural approach endemic to Austin and other places in the 1960s and 1970s. You know—when things were weird. Built in 1978, this structure is perhaps more humble than some of Watson’s builds, but it has the basic characteristics that continue to charm fans of his style. It’s also in a convenient, central location in a leafy neighborhood and on a corner lot across the street from Ricky Guerrero Park. A Modern, Unique Style Home in Copenhagen, Denmark | Small House Beautiful 2018

04:03
Text description provided by the architects. The Helmet House is located in Copenhagen, a densified city with a tough housing market as with so many other big cities. As the city is becoming denser, it’s hard to find a house for an average sized family without having an unreasonably high price. We believe that any family should be able to stay in Copenhagen without being forced to move. Therefore we gave them a house so that they could. An ordinary house transformed into extraordinary architecture. The quality of architecture. That’s something everyone should have access to. The client’s brief was to expand the house without removing too much of the garden area. We suggested an extra floor level as an expansion. In that way, the square meters could be doubled up while the garden area remained the same. The new floor level would in some parts extend to the ground floor, connecting the extension to the existing house into a single volume. In this way, the house would be more assembled than before. In addition to creating a unified volume, one of the main ideas of the extension was to distinguish it from the existing house, the new from the old. We, therefore, decided to keep as much of the old house as possible such as windows, walls, flooring, and materials. We only did a small restoration of the old facade, giving the bricks a light color of grey. The facade of the new extension, on the other hand, was given a dark grey color with a different kind of material made out of rubber from Firestone. The material is watertight and durable and could therefore also be used for the roofing, creating a single shape and texture of the extension. With both a difference in material and color the extension becomes a clear contrast to the old building making sure that it would be obvious from the street to point out what is old and what is new. We wanted the contrast between the old and the new but at the same time gather it. Collect it. The extension together with the old house becomes one single volume. This meeting between the old house and the extension would also be experienced interiorly. The staircase leading up to the first floor is what connects the extension to the existing house. This connection, however, is not entirely complete since the staircase is hanging from the first floor, never touching the ground floor. In this way, when walking up the stairs from the ground floor of the old house to the first floor, it would be clear that you’ve entered the extension. The wooden flooring from the old house is on the first floor replaced with a soft, solid, rubber flooring. The interior is bright with windows on the walls and along the roof, with natural light filling the floor. Your first view will be of the winter garden, facing south and a perfect spot to spend all the late summer evenings surrounded by exotic plants. https://www.archdaily.com/898736/helmet-house-werkt Subscribe and View more here: https://goo.gl/tHjsCp Thanks for watching #tinyhouse #smallhouse #cottage #cabin #smallisbeautiful #house #home #tiny #homedesign

1/7/2018 "Frank Lloyd Wright's Organic Aesthetic" Tracy Jane McCaffrey

43:18
Tracy Jane McCaffrey is a member of the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Springfield, Illinois. Tracy emphasizes the fact that Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unitarian upbringing and principles informed his architecture and his life. This is evident in one of Wright’s more prominent buildings, the Dana Thomas House in Springfield, Illinois. Tracy guided many tours of that historic landmark, which has been restored, preserved and regularly maintained by the State of Illinois. Tracy provides a brief biography of Frank Lloyd Wright and highlights factors that most heavily influenced the work of this world famous architect.

Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Works - Larkin Administration Building

07:46
Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Works is an ongoing educational series of digital animations exploring some of Wright's most important demolished and unrealized structures. The project brings these lost buildings to life through immersive digital animations reconstructed from Wright's original plans and drawings, along with archival photographs. The series begins with Wright's Larkin Administration Building. Designed for the Larkin Company of Buffalo, New York, and built from 1904 to 1906, the building was Wright's first large-scale commission to be built. Darwin Martin, the company's secretary, had viewed Wright's work first hand in Oak Park in 1902. It was Martin who encouraged John Larkin to hire Wright for the design of the company's headquarters. The Larkin Building was demolished in 1950. Iconic Home Design | Prairie

01:04
The Prairie style of home started with the arts and crafts movement in the late 19th century and shares many design aesthetics with the American Craftsman style of home. The style was made with the hopes of creating a new North American style of architecture with a unique and modern feel. The famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was a big advocate of the style and designed many buildings in the prairie style of architecture. While the style is modern there is a heavy focus on nature, flat planes, and ornamentation. Elements of a Prairie home are Long flat roofs Rows of windows Horizontal lines Organic Patterns A connection to indoor and outdoor spaces The Prairie style of home hit its peak popularity in the early 1900’s, but it’s influences can be seen in many newer styles of architecture.

Art Nouveau Vs High Tech Buildings

06:45
Art Nouveau: Art Nouveau, ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic line and was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, and illustration. High Tech Modernism: High-tech architecture, also known as Structural Expressionism, is a type of Late Modern architectural style that emerged in the 1970s, incorporating elements of high-tech industry and technology into building design. High-tech architecture appeared as revamped modernism, an extension of those previous ideas helped by even more technological advances. This category serves as a bridge between modernism and post-modernism; however, there remain gray areas as to where one category ends and the other begins. In the 1980s, high-tech architecture became more difficult to distinguish from post-modern architecture. Some of its themes and ideas were later absorbed into the style of Neo-Futurism art and architectural movement.
