One question y’all send me over and over is: How do I look less frumpy?
I get it. Many of us kind of live in PJs and sweat pants. But after a while, that’s a real drag - kind of boring and frumpy and bland. Who wants that kind of lifestyle?
You can do better, babe. With a few simple steps, you can begin to rock your look - YOUR look! - and you’ll feel more put-together, more human, and more ready to conquer the world despite illness.
You’re using Pinterest, right? Time to create a board where you gather inspiration for your look. Don’t get intimidated by how put-together people are, or how much things cost; at this point, you’re just compiling a visual map for your look.
Once you’ve honed in a little bit on your look, consider more comfortable alternatives to some of the things you like. For example, I love a stylish black pant, but some days, I don’t want to wear anything tight - it flares me up. So I found some beautifully comfy black workout pants, grabbed a size up so they’re really flowy and drapey, and those are my go-to bottoms on flare-up days. I can throw on a cute tunic or blouse with them and I feel pretty and put-together AND still mega-comfy.
Remember that even a plain black t-shirt can look fabulous with the right accessories. Look for “statement pieces” that are bold and fun. Wear a fun clip in your hair. Throw a scarf on and change the look altogether. Accessories can dress up the plainest wardrobe.
Watch your budget
If you’re building a new look for life, you may need to accumulate some stuff. Hit resale shops, consignment stores, and thrift stores for unique finds. It’s easy to head to Target or H&M for some fast fashion, but everyone else will be wearing that stuff too… vintage finds are always going to make you stand out.
Crowdsource your look
Finally, talk with friends about your fashion goals. They may have fun ideas, or items to borrow, or things they don’t want anymore. In fact, some of my favorite wardrobe pieces came from girl swaps organized by friends: We all get together, bring all the clothes, shoes, and accessories we don’t want anymore, and shop each other’s cast-offs. Whatever is left over goes to a charity shop. It’s a great way to grab some “new to you” stuff.
Just because you need to prioritize comfort and work within a tiny budget doesn’t mean you have to look frumpy. If you feel like you need to spruce up your wardrobe, go for it!
