How are your erections? How is your energy levels? But, there is a physical test that can give you some insight as to how your testosterone levels are, and that’s with the finger test. Hold your right hand up in front of you as if you were trying to protect your face in a food fight. Now look at it…. Is your ring finger (the fourth finger, counting the thumb) considerably longer than the finger you point with (the second, “index” finger)? If your ring finger is longer, consider yourself lucky. It seems that finger size, or more specifically, finger ratio, correlates strongly with “higher” testosterone levels, as well as better success in a variety of sports.1 As you see in the picture above, the one of the left side - the ring finger is longer than the index, “pointer” finger. This means higher testosterone levels. Now you might think I’m making this up, but I’m not. Scientists have long noticed that men’s ring fingers are generally longer than their index fingers. With women, it tends to be the reverse: their index fingers are usually longer. They’ve called this difference in length between the index finger and ring finger the “2D:4D ratio.” 2D stands for “second digit” — that’s your index finger, and 4D means “fourth digit” — your ring finger. So if your index finger is 2.9 inches long and your ring finger is 3.1 inches long, you have a 2D:4D ratio of .935 (2.9/3.1 = .935). A longer ring finger compared to your index finger is considered a “low 2D:4D ratio.” Oddly enough, the ring finger seems to have a higher number of receptors for testosterone during early fetal development. Thus, the ring finger grows in proportion to the amount of testosterone produced. The more testosterone produced, the lower the eventual 2D:4D ratio. Interestingly, the 4th digit of the right hand is more sensitive to fetal testosterone than the ring finger of the left hand, so use your right hand to appraise your Testosterone levels. A longer ring finger is merely a biomarker of high levels of fetal testosterone, and this early surge of testosterone is instrumental in influencing the growth of not only the brain and heart, but also muscle and bone, all of which are vital to sports performance. However, I want to point out that even though this has been scientifically proven in 1980, 1998 and again in 2011.. This doesn’t necessarily indicate where your testosterone levels are right NOW. My research finds that increases in testosterone is associated with increased preferences for sexually dimorphic (i.e., masculinity in males and femininity in females) characteristics and changes in self-perception. Specifically, research shows that testosterone influences perceptions by increasing preferences for masculine men and feminine women, and influencing men's perceptions of their own dominance. This research demonstrates that, far from being arbitrary, our preferences and perceptions are at least in part governed by biological processes and that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. Dr. Lisa Welling is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University. Her Ph.D., entitled Individual Differences in Face Preferences, was completed in 2008 and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Grounded in evolutionary reasoning, Dr. Welling’s research generally surrounds three related areas: hormonal influences on behavior, sources of adaptive mate preferences, and interpersonal relationships. In addition to having co-edited a book entitled Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology, Dr. Welling has published five book chapters and more than fifty scientific journal articles. Her research has been featured in the media multiple times on programs including lthe Oprah Winfrey Show and the Discovery Channel documentary Curiosity. I’ve read mixed information and I think I’m doing something wrong because I’m not gaining any muscle, my belly looks fatter and worst of all, my sex drive is worse and it’s causing problems with my girlfriend. I’ve watched so many of your videos and I’ve applied your advice. I’ve gotten great results with my health. However, I don’t think you’ve ever answers this topic - Please help me Dr. Sam” Actually, I have addressed this question in the past, but not in detail or directly and that’s why I’m bringing this up today. And the truth is that I get a lot of questions about this topic. So the fact is that exercise can increase OR decrease your testosterone levels. It all depends on what you do, when, where, how often and for how long. And thus, you can gain OR lose muscle. Decrease OR increase belly fat. Gain OR lose strength. Increase OR decrease your energy levels. Improve or decline immune system. And you can increase or decrease your sex drive, libido and happiness. When I was younger, I would exercise 5-6x weekly. I would work out for at least an hour. I would lift heavy weights, I’d push hard and go to “failure” on all my exercises. I would also do cardio almost daily - for at least 30 minutes or more. Typically it was the bike, jogging, stairmaster, etc. It was a hard workout and I would always leave the gym feeling exhausted. However, I felt like I had a good, “honest” workout because I gave it my all and pushed as much as I can. I did this for years… The end result - sadly, I looked the same all the time!... I always seemed like I had a cold and I’d get sick often. I never had any energy to do much else -- I was just tired from my workouts. The end result is I looked “skinny-fat”. You know, not muscular or “lean”. It just didn’t look good. I was “puffy” and “squishy” all the time. And sadly, my sex drive was kinda “blah”. Granted, because I was YOUNG, it was still “okay”. However, compared to my friends - it was much lower. Then one day I decided to do a hormone test because I was just curious. Well, guess what -- my testosterone levels were low. Worst of all, my “negative” hormones were “high”... Thus, my hormones were not good, not optimal -- definitely not for a 23 year old man. ...When things should have been much better and I should have had super high testosterone levels. I realized then that without the right hormones - it doesn’t matter what you do, how much you exercise or what you eat -- you’re screwed! This is why steroids are so powerful. They give you “optimal” levels. However, you can make your own“natural steroids” from within, and not have any of the negative side-effects … IF you know what to do and more importantly, what NOT to do. So what does all of this have to do with the original topic of “exercise and increasing or decreasing your testosterone levels”?... Here’s the basic “short cuts” on the “do’s” and “don’ts” DO Lift weights! Keep your workouts short, 45 minutes or less. Workout no more than 4x weekly. Do one workout with heavier weights and lower reps - about 8-10 repetitions. And the next workout higher, about 12-15 reps. One week out of every month, reduce your sets and have easier workouts. DON’TS Eliminate or limit stressful cardio. This means no running, jogging, biking, etc. These all decrease your testosterone and increase stress hormones. Don’t kill yourself every workout, go to failure, pushing hard, etc. When you are “natural” and have “regular” genetics, you can’t push so much, so often… When I ask most people “what’s the opposite of testosterone”, people typically reply back with “estrogen”, the female hormone. However, this is not true. Actually, the opposite of testosterone is the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol does the opposite of testosterone. It decreases muscle and strength, increases belly fat, makes you tired and kills your sex drive. Tournament vs pair-bonding The term I keep coming across to describe humans (and other species) is "serial pair bonders" or "serial monogamist". We tend to fall madly in love for a few years and then fall out of love. But considering all the diversity in human sexuality, and the fact that there are billions of us, it's hardly beneficial to put a label on it. You'll get polygamists, you'll get monogamists for life, you'll get males who are attracted to males, you'll get males who feel like they are female and who are attracted to females... and you know everything else. Looking at animal behaviour and the reasons for animal behaviour is just a way to start thinking about behaviour on a evolutionary scale. These are not necessarily models to explain human behaviour. Every species and every community will have a different world of when it's appropriate to be aggressive and when it's appropriate to be sexual. From secondary sources I've read that male and female humans are equally aggressive (how this is measured I do not know) but that males are more "physically aggressive". But that a big part of the difference stems from male vs male aggression. For example, from what I can see from internet article statistics (not really statistics), females and males are similar in counts of "physical domestic aggression". I’m Cristen, and today we’re going to talk about the human voice. First off, let’s acknowledge that everyone is a special and unique butterknife, and there’s no rule about how men and women’s voices should sound. But on average, adult men’s voices have what’s known as a lower “fundamental frequency” than adult women’s voices. The fundamental frequency is simply the scientific term for how high or low a person’s natural speaking voice is. Sound frequency is measured in hertz, which means how many times something happens in one second. So a sound wave that vibrates 100 times per second produces a tone of 100 hertz. The more cycles per second, the higher the pitch. Babies usually cry at a frequency of around 500 hertz. Children have speaking frequencies in the range of 250 to 400 hertz. By the time of adulthood, however, men have an average fundamental frequency of about 125 hertz, and women about 200 hertz. What happened here? Why the big difference? To understand why men’s voices end up lower than women’s voices, we need to look at how the body produces sound. So let’s take a magical journey to the inside of your neck! Leading from your lungs to the cavity behind your mouth and nose is a pipeline called the trachea. You use it to breathe. At the top of the trachea is a hollow organ called the larynx, or in common parlance, “the voice box.” The larynx is also what allows us to make sound for talking or singing. To do this, you use your lungs to push a column of air through the larynx while using your laryngeal muscles to press together a pair of membranes called the vocal folds, or more commonly, your vocal cords. When you close the vocal folds like this, the air you push out through them makes them vibrate, and this vibration leads to sound. There are several factors that can all have some effect on the fundamental frequency of a person’s voice, like the size of the larynx and differential development of facial bones and cavities in the head, but the most important factor to talk about is the length of the vocal folds. If you pluck a string, the length of the string affects the frequency of the note that plays. Think about a guitar. When you press a string down to a higher fret on a guitar, you shorten the length of the part of the string that vibrates when you pluck it, and this produces a higher note. The same thing happens inside your larynx! The longer the vocal fold, the lower the note. During puberty, both boys and girls experience growth of the vocal folds, leading to lower voices. But the male hormone testosterone, which is released by the testicles during puberty, typically causes boys’ vocal folds to grow longer and thicker than girls’. On average, adult women have vocal folds somewhere around 10 millimeters long, while adult men have focal folds in the neighborhood of 16 millimeters. Consequently, women are up there on the upper frets soloing into oblivion like a high school kid who just learned to play “Eruption” by Van Halen, and men are letting the open strings ring like the intro to “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. Y’know? Y’know? Bonus! Everyone knows what happens when you inhale some helium from a party balloon or, you know, straight from an industrial helium transport truck – your voice pitch gets higher. This is because helium is less dense than air. But did you know you can reverse the effect and give yourself a deep, booming bridge-troll-voice by breathing a gas with a higher density than air, like xenon or sulfur hexafluoride? Hey everyone! I decided to document the day (which turned into two days) I finally got my testosterone. I cannot even begin to describe how surreal this feels. Realistically, I never thought I would actually ever get my testosterone. It just kept being put off and there was so much stuff my family and I had to get through and figure out. Getting here was not easy. If you want me to talk about how I got here in another video then let me know. Part 2 coming soon! Also, I just want to add a caption on an instagram post I made earlier today where I announced this: I'm scared me sharing this is making someone out there sad, because I know the feeling. The "I'm extremely happy for you, but I kinda hate you lol" that I'd experience every time I saw another person my age or even younger (or in general) pop up with freshly prescribed testosterone or fresh top surgery scars. The Non-Exercise, Exercise However, today I’m NOT going to discuss anything about lifting weights, cardio, etc. I’ve done that in the past. What I want to talk about is a very simple “non-exercise”, exercise... that you can do RIGHT NOW, while watching this video and that’s called, the Kegel Exercise. I call this the “non-exercise” exercise because it requires no gym, equipment or even real movement. Now, some of you may have heard of this. Unfortunately most do it incorrectly. Kegel exercises are done to strengthen the perineal muscles. To “flex” this muscle, it’s very simple. One way to describe how to do it is, by contracting your anus muscle, as if you’re trying to hold in gas. Go ahead and give it a try now... Another way to do it is stop peeing midway through. Thus, as you’re peeing, “contract the muscle” that will STOP the pee, midway through. That’s it - that’s a kegel exercise. Super simple, but extremely effective. You can literally do it anywhere, anytime and nobody would know. Sets & Reps You should do kegel’s about 3x a week to start with. Over time, slowly build up to 5x weekly. Just don’t do it every single day because like any muscle, it requires rest to gain strength. Contract the muscle (holding in gas or stop peeing) and hold for 3-5 seconds. Relax for 1-2 seconds. That’s ONE repetition Do this 10 of these, for 10 repetitions. That’s ONE set Do one set of 10 repetitions, 3x weekly. Then maybe the next week do 2 sets of 10 reps and work up to 3 sets of 10 reps, 3x weekly. You can do it all at once, or break it up 2-3x daily. Nothing it set in stone. What matters is consistency, persistence and patience. If you lose muscle size? If it lowers your sex drive? If it makes you fatter? If it causes man-boobs (gynecomastia)? And similar questions. Generally, these questions are from men. However, this also affects women as well… In fact, just a few weeks ago I had one of my private clients tell me that after filming ends on one of her movies, she reduces and stops smoking pot. And within days, her sex drive shoots up like crazy… and asked why? Lowered Testosterone And the answer is that yes, marijuana lowers testosterone levels. I’ve seen it over and over again in dozens of blood tests over the years and especially in recent times since it’s now legal and people have easy access. What’s worse, it also creates an imbalance in other hormones … which I’ll get to in a minute. In fact, studies have shown this for years. In 1974, The New England Journal Of Medicine1 showed that marijuana smokers between the age of 18-28, had testosterone levels of about 416 ng, while the non smokers had 742 ng. That’s like half the testosterone. Normal levels are roughly between 300-900, on the higher end for guys in their 20’s. YET, the pot smokers were near the low/normal range. That’s horrible! In another human study4, it showed that testosterone levels drop by 33% within an hour and 66% within 2 hours. Again, not good. However, there are other studies showing very little difference. Man Boobs - Gynecomastia Men can get gynecomastia (aka “gyno”), which is also called “man boobs” or “moobs”. This happens when estrogen levels go up. Which then causes a negative feedback loop in your body, causing a decrease in testosterone levels. Thus, the imbalance will cause swelling in your nipples, leading to man boobs. This will also eventually accelerate prostate problems (BPH and cancer) and hair loss as well. But, that’s another topic for another day. And, there are studies2,3 showing that marijuana use causes higher estrogen levels and thus, leading to all of these problems. Kills Your Sperm Another problem with all of this is that for sure, marijuana lowers sperm concentrations, count and mobility.5-7 The crazy part is that the negative effects happen with just once-a-week usage and can last for 3 months or longer.6,7 So if you want to have kids, you better stop using cannabis. Real Life Feedback So, let me give you REAL life feedback that I have, since my background is in both Pharmacology (study of drugs) and Endocrinology (study of hormones). YES - it marijuana lowers your testosterone levels by decreasing FSH and LH levels. YES - it increases estrogen levels, which further decreases your testosterone levels. YES - it can cause and exacerbate gynecomastia / “Man Boobs” YES - it will cause negativity in your sperm count, motility and quality. However, some things to keep in mind. Everyone reacts differently. They're going to tell you that your thyroid is going to be destroyed. They're going to tell you that your hormones are going to be completely out of whack, and that you're never going to recover. Well, it's not quite the truth. In this video, I want to give you the A to Z breakdown of what happens to the female body during a fast, during intermittent fasting in particular. How often should a women fast? What can they expect? What's happening with their hormones and what's happening with their reproductive system? In this video, I'm going to take you through A to Z what goes on, starting with the starvation and the hunger hormones, leading into your reproductive hormones, then leading into your thyroid. Let's dive right in, and men, this video's for you, too, because it's going to help describe exactly what's going on in your body, as well. Okay, here's the thing. When it comes down to starvation hormones ... we're talking leptin, ghrelin, insulin, things like that that we have to be paying attention to when it comes down to hunger and satiation ... women are much more sensitive to them. It's nothing bad, nothing wrong with them. It's simply a protective mechanism. It's not the fact that the thyroid's shutting down. It's the fact that the female body is recognizing that there's no food coming in, so they don't want to be producing eggs. They don't want to be ovulating. It's natural. Why would a female body want to produce eggs to stimulate potential reproduction if they're not eating, if they're starving? That's where this whole thing starts. It all has to do with leptin, ghrelin, and insulin. But it goes much more than that. We're going to talk about what's happening with the brain and with the gonads now. Let's talk about GNRH. GNRH is a particular thing that is secreted by the hypothalamus in both males and females, and it has to do with what's called the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. I know lots of guys that are proud of the HPTA, thinking that it only has to do with testosterone and their male bodies. Oh, no. That's not the case. The HPTA axis, that entire process, is men and women. And here's how it works. Your brain has an area called the hypothalamus. This hypothalamus ends up secreting something known as GNRH. This GNRH tells the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. What these hormones end up doing is triggering the production of sperm and testosterone in men and producing ovulation and triggering progesterone and estrogen in women. They both do the same thing, just with a different end result. We still have the same catalyst, the same hormones. Now what ends up happening is how women go through this process compared to men. Now that we know GNRH and we understand the HPTA has to do with men and women, we can talk about the precursor to the GNRH, which is where the problem really starts, and that's something known as kisspeptin. Where the problem occurs with kisspeptin is just with people not knowing what's really going on. Most of the beef in the fasting community and most of the beef with women fasting in general all has to do with kisspeptin. . Why do women bodybuilders have deep voices? It is because of the testosterone. Are you sure that the testosterone is to blame? Normal women cannot build muscle to the extreme that male body builders do. Female body builders are either injecting testosterone or have unnaturally high levels. And testosterone makes the voice lower. When a guy hits puberty, testosterone levels rise. He builds more muscle, starts growing facial hair and his voice drops. And he starts to suffer from periodic drops in IQ when his blood starts to flow elsewhere. Don't all men have high levels of testosterone? Male body builders may have high levels of testosterone, but there are some who inject it or other hormones or drugs to build up even more muscle. And women who are body builders have to add to it, because their bodies don't make enough testosterone to come out looking like a body builder. Women can be fit without using drugs. That's true. But looking lean and fit, like a volley ball player, isn't the same as having massive pecs. So women body builders have to use testosterone to get that look. And with significant, or prolonged use, it starts to alter the body. They get massive muscles. And they start developing male secondary characteristics. The voice box changes, like a boy's does during adolescence. They still have breasts. Only because the breasts had already developed. But the reverse happens when a man takes lots of estrogen, often developing breasts because the hormones trigger secondary sexual characteristic growth despite your genetic gender. OMG, that's horrible. If she's got a deep voice, isn't she going to grow a beard? Ever heard of the bearded woman? These were often women with unnaturally high testosterone, big, burly and bearded. But female body builders are hairless. So are the guys, for the same reasons. They're all waxing, shaving and oiling to look good for the judges. But now she may have to shave her face and chest? Oh, disgusting. Funny you don't think about how she's altering her very body in an effort.

There's a certain look that we can define as more of an attribute of a masculine looking body just like there are certain looks and traits that we can define for a feminine looking body. With women one of the most attractive shapes to men is the Hourglass shape. And thats According to a study conducted by dr. Dixon from Victoria University, he said that men rated images with an hourglass shape and a small waist as most attractive. The other way aroynd with women rating men it appears a strong muscular upper body in the shape of a v seems to be more attractive. This is according to a new study from Griffith University in Queensland. Now before I get into these exercises that will help you build a more attractive body as a man I'd like to issue a disclaimer because this is not one of those channels where I'm going to tell you that by getting a six pack you're going to have girls flocking all over you that's just not how it works. Please understand that to be an attractive man you can't just rely on how you look. But we all know that first impressions can definitely help so let's start with the very first exercise that you should be doing and that's the lat pulldown. Why am I big fan of the lat pulldown well because part of getting that V shape is to have a wider upper body then your waist. A huge portion of your width stems from your back. The lat pulldown is an excellent exercise to work your lats your back the back of your shoulders and your biceps. Make sure when you're doing the lat pulldown for width you go wider with your grip on the bar. Also make sure that when you come down you flare your elbows out that'll put more pressure on the lats and move you towards that v-shape appearance. The next exercise you want to make sure you're doing as a guy are squats. Part of having an aesthetic looking figure is maintaining proper proportions. If you have a huge upper body even if it's in the shape of a v but your lower body makes you look like you're about to topple over it's not going to look very good at all. On top of that squats are going to work your whole body especially your core in a way that most exercises can't. It helps you train your transverse abdominis which is the Deep layer abdominal muscle fiber that helps pull your stomach in and gives you that flat stomach look. It's also no secret that girls just like guys prefer fuller butts rather than flatter butts. So when you do your squats make sure you go nice and low and you sit back in order to really incorporate your glutes and thighs into the movement. The next exercise you want to make sure you're doing for building an ideal male physique is some form of bench pressing dumbell pressing or pushing movement. The reason why I say bench pressing or pushing movement is because it's very hard to work your chest muscles effectively any other way. The chest is a lagging muscle group for many guys and unfortunately most functional exercises fail to incorporate horizontal abduction. Which is when you bring your hands together from far away like a chest fly. Horizontal abduction is required to build up your chest and once again you want to maintain portions you don't want to have huge arms and a tiny chest. Make sure at least once a week you're dedicating sometime to getting some pressing movements into your routine. The good news is that while you're doing the presses you'll not only be working your chest but you also be working your shoulders and your triceps as well. Shoulders especially the middle head of your shoulder is another muscle that's important for giving you that wider upper body appearance. That's why you want to make sure that you incorporate the fourth exercise which is overhead presses whether it be military presses or dumbbell presses they're going to help grow your shoulders giving you that wider V tappered appearance. A lot of people do make mistakes of not going low enough when they do a military shoulder press that I want to make sure you guys watching this video don't make so you can have the maximum results for your shoulders. When you come down for a military press or a dumbbell press you don't want to stop at eye level or your level you want to come down under your chin. If you're only going to eye level or ear level you're working a lot more triceps rather than the shoulders that you're intending to work. Next up are Pull-Ups and if you can do pull ups without assistance it can be a far more effective exercise than even the lat pulldown for widening out.
