Slang: 13 Funny Word Mash-Ups in English

11:15
Word mash-ups are slang terms made of two words to describe something in more detail. For example, "brunch" is a combination of "breakfast" and "lunch", and it means a meal that combines both breakfast and lunch foods. In this lesson, I will teach you many common word mash-ups that native English speakers use, such as "hangry", "skort", "shart", "ginormous", "spork", "sexting", and more. Many of these words are so common that they are almost considered standard English vocabulary, so it is important to know them. You can even create your own word mash-ups, and maybe they will become popular! At the end of the lesson, test your knowledge by doing the quiz, and don't forget to submit your own ideas for new word mash-ups in the comments section! http://www.engvid.com/slang-13-funny-word-mash-ups-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Are you ready for some mash up? Mash it up, mash it up. My name's Ronnie. I'm going to teach you how to mash things up. What does that mean? Mash up. Do you like potatoes? And you mash them? You combine them, squish them together, put some butter... No. What? Okay, so word mash-ups, word mash-ups, slang, teaching you slang. Word mash-ups mean we take two words, mash them together, and make a whole new language for you to learn. And just when you thought you had mastered English vocabulary, we make more for you. These are fun. And by the end of this lesson, I think you can make your own word mash-ups. That'll be fun. So, let's get the potatoes cooking. Let's mash up some words. Maybe some of these words you have heard before and maybe you know them. Very, very popular word is "brunch", but do you know what "brunch" means? "Brunch" is a word mash-up. It's old-school, which means it's old. "Brunch" means "breakfast" and "lunch" at the same time. So, brunch begins from whatever time you want and usually ends at about 3:00. So if you want to eat from the time you wake up until afternoon, you're eating brunch. It's breakfast and lunch together, so that means you get to eat all the breakfast foods and all the delicious lunch foods at one time. Glorious brunch. Maybe you have heard this word, I personally think it's a little overused, the word is called "chillax". "Chill" and "relax". If you have watched my lesson on "Chill, Chill Out", you're going to know that "chill" means to be calm. So, "chill" and "relax" means to be calm and relaxed. Chillax, people, everything's going to be fine. Bro, chillax, bro. Brah. Have you heard people say this: "brah" or "bro"? It is a slang way for usually men to greet each other. We don't say: -"Good afternoon, Kevin. How are you today?" -"Why, I'm fine." We say: "Brah, what's up? Yo, bro." for boys. So we have what's called a "bromance". What do you think "bromance" means? It means "bro" and "romance", so this means that you are a man and you kind of like another guy, but you're not gay. You just like your friend a lot. Next one, we hear this a lot in TV. Well, all of them you're going to hear in American TV, but this is I imagine in a TV commercial: a "staycation". It sounds like "vacation". So, a "staycation" means a stay-at-home vacation. This means you don't have to go to work-yes-but you're not travelling somewhere. Usually on vacations we travel. A staycation means you don't go to work and you stay at home in your pajamas, watching www.engvid.com. Would you do that? Yeah. You're doing it now. These ones, I think, are my favourite. The first one, not very well-known, is: "vurp". "Vurp" means "vomit" and "burp". So, you have to burp. [Burps] Excuse me. But actually when you do that, some vomit comes up - not a good situation... I didn't vurp, it's fine. Not a good situation. So, maybe you've eaten a lot at brunch, maybe you've overdone it, had a little bromance at brunch and you're eating, and you burp, but a little bit of stomach vile comes up - that's a vurp. You don't actually vomit, but it's... It's kind of close. This one is actually quite fun and a great conversation starter. This is "shart". "Shart" is "shit" and "fart". It's along the same meaning as vomit and burp, except it's the other end. So, you think you're going to fart... Fart means: "[makes fart noise]". Okay? But actually, uh-oh, a little bit of poo or shit comes out. A little embarrassing. We also have a word for this is Hershey squirts. Do you know the Hershey's kisses? Kind of the same idea there or... So, a shart is you think you're going to fart, you're like: "Oh, it's safe." [Fart noise]. Oh. You can usually see it in the person's face.

Urban Dictionary: Brilliant & Funny New Words You Should Start Using 💖

For more great videos Please SUBSCRIBE Today ➤➤ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb4W4JYPLG5WMNmXYrMB1jw?sub_confirmation=1 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DidYouKnow.DailyInfo When languages evolve, it's important that scholars and dictionaries keep up. The internet has spawned a new crop of words for stuff, and while you may not like all of them, some of them are really clever combos that seem like they might actually be useful! Many of these words come from urbandictionary.com, which is basically a dictionary of modern slang. Their site is probably the most complete dictionary of modern slang, but it's also full chock-full of nonsense. Most of these words are portmanteaus, which are what you get when you mash both the sounds and meanings of two words together to get a new one. Did you know, for example, that the word 'smog' is a portmanteau (smoke and fog)? 'Brunch' (breakfast and lunch) is another one that is becoming more and more popular, although it's been around for a while. And if you're eating your brunch with a spork, then that's a portmanteau double-whammy. The amazing thing about portmanteaus is that you can take any combination of words and mash them together to create something hilarious or actually profound. The Urban Dictionary is full of nonsense as well as applicable terms that I use on a day to day basis. It’s also important to remember as a society that is constantly growing and coming up with new ideas as well as new words. We’ll always have our sophisticated intelligent words that hold the same timeless meaning throughout history, but with our ever changing world I think it’s more than acceptable that our vocabulary changes too. People have been using the portmanteaus such as “spork” or “brunch” being one of the most popular terms as of late. It would be pretty awesome to see some of these other beautiful collaborations used outside the Urban Dictionary. Obviously there are some Urban Dictionary words that probably should not be used frequently based on the terminology. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of good ones either. Besides, learning some interesting new words is always a blast. Enhance your vocabulary with some of these terms gathered from the Urban Dictionary! Can you think of any fun new words that real modern dictionaries should adopt? If so, add them to this list!

Brilliant Funny New Words We Should Add To A Dictionary

03:57
Brilliant Funny New Words We Should Add To A Dictionary When languages evolve, it's important that scholars and dictionaries keep up.

Umm...my dog ate it. *kids laughing* Well...I find your excuse to be rather dubious. Why don't you believe me Mrs. Watson? 25 Silly Pop Culture Words That Shouldn’t Belong In The Dictionary

07:52
It's Official: The Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam Webster have given credence to silly pop culture words which are now etched for all eternity into the English language. We can't really complain though; that's how English works. There's a longstanding joke that goes something like this: "English follows other languages into dark alleys, beats them up, then rummages in their pockets for random bits of grammar and syntax" and it's not wrong. Perhaps these 25 Silly Pop Culture Words That Shouldn't Belong In The Dictionary have already made it into your daily vocabulary (we kind of hope not). 25 Silly Pop Culture Words That Shouldn’t Belong In The Dictionary | List25 "Adorbs" used to be an annoying teenager's way of shortening the word "Adorable". Now it has its own entry into the dictionary. "Cheerer-upper" sounds like something Buddy the Elf would say, but it's also officially a word in the English Language! A noun meaning someone who cheers you up. It's cute, it's sweet, it sounds like something a child who's just starting to grasp grammar would say. YOLO (short for You Only Live Once) has been added to the official Oxford English Dictionary. Because apparently they no longer want to be taken more seriously than a teenager who's about to make a horrible life choice. Clickbait - a noun meaning a misleading headline for an article or story online, causing you to click on it - is another one we can now keep forever. A humblebrag is when someone tries to be modest, but is really just drawing attention to how awesome they are. This is very often seen among moms on social media (no judgement, the author is one) and celebrity tweets, such as Chrissy Teigen's "What does one even wear to a meeting at the Style Network?!". Let's all just not, okay? A neckbeard is literally the part of a man's beard that grows on his neck. It's also, now, an insult for the socially inept, nerdy, and physically unappealing. Apparently someone woke up one morning and thought "You know what we need? More insults for men and nerds." A Selfie is a picture taken of oneself, usually with a smartphone, usually making stupid faces or hand gestures, and shared via social media. We all knew that but..we kind of all wish we didn't? Now we can never stop knowing it. FOMO means "Fear Of Missing Out", when someone is at home or disconnected from social media. Apparently this has become such a phenomena that we needed a horrible acronym for it that's made it's way into everyday conversation, otherwise we might be missing out on knowing people are worried about missing out. Woke is an adjective, the past tense of "Wake". In 2016 it's used to signal awareness of some social injustice, such as the silencing or limiting of free speech that goes against culture. And since "Woke" is past tense, the phrase "Stay Woke" still makes many of us cringe. The word "Literally" has been around for awhile, and it means "In a literal manner or sense; exactly". However, it's been so overused for exaggerated emphasis on something that isn't literally true, that it now also means what it used to mean, and the exact opposite of that. Confused yet? Yeah, we are too. Also a little angry. And more... Want more? FUNNY SONG #3: The Long Word Song

02:31
The long word in this funny song is spelled 2 ways: HippopotomonstrosesquiPPedaliophobia, which has become preferred in recent years, and HippopotomonstrosesquiPedaliophobia. The Long Word Song is a funny song by Bryant Oden, about a real word, that means fear of long words. It's also spelled with two Ps in quipped: HippopotomonstrosesquiPPedaliophobia. It's a newer word, and experts still disagree about the spelling. It's pronounced Hippo potto monstroses quip ed alio phobia. More funny songs by Bryant Oden (AKA Songdrops), like The Duck Song, I Got a Pea, The Homework Song, Best Friends Forever, Tarantula's, The Color Song, and many more, on this channel and at Songdrops.com. Free download of this song: http://www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2793262 Free download of the instrumental karaoke version: http://www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2845692 Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (Pneumono ultra microscopic silico volcano coniosis) is in most dictionaries but some experts believe the word was created specifically in order to be ridiculously long... LYRICS to The Long Word Song: ((Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia) I’ve been afraid of big words since I was a kid I thought that I’d get over it somehow I never did Usually it’s no big deal but every now and then You’re audaciously loquacious (ahh!) it kicks in again I went to a specialist and said what’s wrong with me Based upon your test results, it’s not hard to see You’re afraid of lengthy words you’re not the only one Here’s what your condition’s called but this won’t be much fun Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia If you’re afraid it’s no big deal, here’s one you should know-a Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia I’m not even joking, no I kid you not Though it’s absurd that’s the word I don’t like it a lot There’s one thing I know for sure so listen if you please Whoever came up with the word did not have the disease [Chorus] I was in my science class when I started screaming It was cuz of a video the teacher was streaming It was about a lung disease I hope they all get better But whoever named it gave it way too many letters I mean really who would name a disease Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis Not very sensitive to people who have [chorus] [chorus] Other funny songs for kids and everyone by Bryant Oden include The Duck Song, I Got a Pea, The BFF Song, Tarantulas, Paula the Koala, and dozens of other other funny songs).

What is an oxymoron? Definition and 20 funny examples!

13:05
Do you know what an oxymoron is? This video starts with a quick definition of oxymorons. They're a funny part of the English language! Oxymorons are figures of speech that have two contradicting terms. Using oxymorons correctly will make your English speaking and writing more descriptive. They're fun to learn and are a great boost for your vocabulary, too. In this lesson, I'll share 20 oxymorons that are common in everyday English, I'll explain them, and I'll give you examples of how they are used. So don't be scared! Oxymorons are fun and easy! Take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/what-is-an-oxymoron/ to make sure you know these phrases correctly, then start using them in your own conversations! TRANSCRIPT Ah. Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on "20 English Oxymorons". So, let's get right to it. An "oxymoron" is a figure of speech that has two contradictory or opposite words appearing side by side. So, basically, it's a combination of two words that really have opposite meanings, but we use them, you know, regularly in sentences and phrases. So, the origin of the word "oxymoron" is from the Greek for "oxy" and "moron", which means sharp and dull. "Dull" is the opposite of "sharp". So, you can have a sharp knife or a dull knife. A dull knife doesn't cut very well. Right? Which itself is oxymoronic. So, these combinations of words here are oxymoronic. What I'm going to do in this video is first I will review every single one of the oxymorons. So, if you are already a native English speaker, you can kind of just read the oxymorons with me, get a good laugh, continue with your day, and watch whatever other cat videos you want to watch today on YouTube. And if you are a non-native English speaker, after reviewing everything, I'm going to go back one by one, and give a more detailed explanation. All right? So, let's begin. Number one: "alone together", "crash landing", "devout atheist", "exact estimate", "found missing", "minor miracle", "old news", "only choice", "freezer burn", "growing smaller", "jumbo shrimp", "loosely sealed", "loud whisper", "original copy", "same difference", "seriously funny", "small crowd", "student teacher", "unbiased opinion", "working vacation". Okay. Now, let's look at these one by one, and explain why they are oxymoronic. One: "alone together". The word "alone" means to be by yourself, so how can you be alone when there's another person or a group of people with you? You're not alone. You're with other people. Right? Okay. A "crash landing". So, an airplane can land or it can crash. Right? So, these things are opposites. "To crash" means to just smash into the ground, and "to land" typically means to land smoothly with the plane, and to touch down with no problems. So, a crash landing doesn't really make sense. A "devout atheist". So, an atheist is a person who doesn't believe in God. The word "devout" is an adjective that means highly devoted, usually in a spiritual sense. So, can an atheist show, like, devotion to not believing in something? Usually, if you are a devout, for example, a devout Christian or a devout Muslim or a devout Hindu - you show devotion to, you know, your God or your Gods. Whereas an atheist doesn't really have a God or believe in God, so they can't really have devotion for something. Right? All right. An "exact estimate". An estimate is a guess, it's not exactly a precise figure. So, if you go to the mechanic to fix your car and you ask: "How much money will this cost?" and the mechanic says: "Probably $400-$450", that's the estimate. Now, "exact" means exactly the number. You can't estimate exactly the number. You can only estimate a guess, or around a specific number. "Found missing". So, if a child goes missing, they get lost or kidnapped from their parents, and then they are found by the police, in the news people say: "The child was found missing." But you found them, so they're not missing anymore. Right? Okay. Next: "minor miracle". Going back to the religious term a little bit. A miracle is something that cannot be explained by science. It's something that is so amazing that it goes against the laws of nature. So, really, something is miraculous, it's amazing, incredible. It can't be small, it can't be minor. It's something massive and huge. Right? Next: "old news". "News" means things that are current, things that are happening now. So, how can news be old? Maybe yesterday's news kind of, but really, the two terms collide with each other. Next: "only choice". Now, "choice" means you have more than one option. Okay? If you only have one choice, that's not a choice. So you can't have an only choice, you must have multiple choices. All right?
