Creation v. Evolution: How Carbon Dating Works

03:58
Recently Bill Nye and Ken Ham had a debate regarding the validity of evolution and creationism. This debate mixed with the recent discovery of the earliest known human footprints outside Africa is leading a big question to arise: How does carbon dating work? Well, Trace did some digging and is here to tell you all about carbon dating and other ways we can know the age of an object or fossil. All living things are made up of about 25% carbon. The carbon atom is unique because it can bind to other carbon atoms to form long chains and rings and these in turn serve as the backbone of the complex molecules that make life possible. The nucleus of a typical carbon atom has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. But about one carbon atom out of every 100 has one extra neutron. This has very little effect on the properties of the carbon, other than making it slightly heavier. Chemically, it acts just like any other carbon atom. It is called Carbon-13. And there is an even rarer type of carbon. It is formed high in the atmosphere when cosmic rays strike atoms of nitrogen converting them into Carbon -14. Carbon-14 is also chemically identical to regular carbon. But the nucleus of carbon-14 is unstable. After some amount of time, which could range from a few days to many thousands of years, carbon-14 decays back into nitrogen. But since carbon-14 is formed at a steady rate, there is a constant level of it in the environment. Out of every trillion carbon atoms in your body, only one dozen of them are carbon-14. As long as an organism is alive and eating, it maintains a constant ratio of carbon-14 to regular carbon. But once an organism dies, the amount of carbon-14 in its body begins to decrease. After 5000 years about half of the original number of carbon-14 atoms will have decayed. Using this fact, scientists can tell how long ago an organism died. • http://www.cassiopeiaproject.com .

It is often argued that radio carbon dating is a safe way of measuring age on. What is often forgotten, is that this method will also require certain assumptions, and that the measurement result is dependent on these assumptions is correct. Kent Hovind have some thoughts about this.

However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of YouTube comment sections, in our experience. We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors. ------- The most up to date Atheist Experience videos can be found by visiting http://atheist-experience.com/archive/ You can read more about this show on the Atheist Experience blog: ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE? How Radiometric Dating Works: Relative not Absolute Ages

01:19:55
If you like this technical lecture from the 2017 IGH Conference, you can get it and over 70 more at: https://isgenesishistory.com/conference/ Listen to Dr. Andrew Snelling explain how radioisotope dating works, document the anomalies he has discovered with it, and examine how it can be used for relative dating purposes. Dr. Snelling completed a BS in applied geology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, graduating with first-class honors in 1975. His PhD in geology was awarded in 1982 by The University of Sydney for his research thesis titled “A Geochemical Study of the Koongarra Uranium Deposit, Northern Territory, Australia.” Dr. Snelling worked for six years in the exploration and mining industries in Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, variously as a field, mine, and research geologist. For over ten years, Dr. Snelling was a research consultant to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization for an international collaborative research project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy which involved university and government research scientists from the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Austria and Belgium. He is currently Director of Research for Answers in Genesis. Radiometric Dating is Flawed!! Really?? How Old IS the Earth?

10:18
THIS VIDEO IS LACED WITH SARCASM (to those who have difficulty sensing it). Scientists admit that radiometric dating, one of the fundamental techniques used to show the earth is billions of years old is flawed!!! The earth is not 4.55 billion years old. Watch and find out just how old it really is. Of course, scientists are always refining their techniques, it's part of of science works. Creationists have pointed to a number of "results" from radiometric dating that prove it doesn't work. Here I go over all the reasons why. Why is there Carbon-14 in some coal. Why did Potassium-Argon dating of the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens give ages on the order of hundreds of thousands of years. Carbon Dating for Kids: Learning the Science

05:14
Get the downloadable lab here: https://rosieresearch.com/shop/the-mummy-mystery-osmosis-and-carbon-dating/ Archaeologists use carbon dating to discover how old an object is. They compare the ratio of heavy Carbon 14 to it's lighter, and more plentiful sibling, Carbon 12. In labs mass spectrometers are able to separate them to find out how much of each is in a sample. In our activity we will use heavier nickels as Carbon 14 and lighter pennies as Carbon 12. Using similar principles we will accelerate the coins down a ramp and us a constant cross force of a hair dryer to change the direction of the coins. Pennies will hit the wall closer to the ramp, and the coins will make two separate groups - much like what you would see in a real mass spectrometer! Kids then count up the number of nickels and pennies, take the ratio, and use a chart to discover if their chicken mummy is from King Tut's tomb or an impostor! This is a fun hands on science activity that goes with our homeschool science curriculum in our October Mummy Mystery! Why Dating Methods Can Date Nothing

09:19
Radiometric dating methods rely upon circular logic, such as calibration curves and dating fossils by rocks by strata by fossils by rocks by strata. When employing dating methods, evolutionists toss out dates which dissagree with the assumed age of something only to publish the date that seems to come closest to their assumption. You are never told about the dates which dissagreee with their assumptions. They are not scientific and ignora several scientific observations which make it clear that they are worthless. Evolutionists teach diamonds formed millions or billions of years ago out of carbon deep in the crust. If this is true than the radioactive 14C should be undetectable after 100,000 due to its fast decay rate. Diamonds were sampled from 12 locations all over the world and they contained measurable amounts of 14C. icr . o r g / carbon-14 / CreationismCoal supposedly formed millions or hundreds of millions of years ago according to evolutionists but coal samples have also been tested and they also contain measurable amounts of 14C. These results support what the Bible says about the young age of the Earth and the world wide flood. icr . o r g / rate / Radiometric dating methods use a material of pressumed age as a control for calibration, such as a rock of assumed age or an index fossil (of assumed age). There is nothing imperical about dating methods. To this are added "fudge factors". Dating methonds are circular logic and incapable of dating anything because they do not use a material of empirically known age for calinration, and are therefore incapable of providng a date for anything. The sun produces C-14 in the upper atmosphere, and at the same time it decays which removes it from the Earth. Because the Earth has not acheived C-14 equalibrium but is instead still increasing, which would take approximately 30,000 yrs, C-14 verifies the fact that the Earth is less than 30,000 yrs old.

Radiocarbon Dating

A video by the The Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory NZ regarding carbon dating. Full article and more videos- http://www.eequalsmcsquared.auckland.ac.nz/sites/emc2/videos/cool-kiwi-science.cfm 'The Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory has a long history in radiocarbon dating. To determine the radiocarbon age of an organic material it is necessary to measure the proportion of radiocarbon (C14) in the carbon that it contains. The technical problem to be solved is the detection of the rare isotope C14 in the presence of the much more abundant isotopes C12 and C13. The natural abundance of 14C is about one 14C atom per trillion (10^12) atoms of C12. What can you date? Anything containing carbon between 150 and 60,000 years old (i.e.: wood, leather, bone, paper, seawater, gases, ice cores, pollen, pottery, coral, seeds, charcoal, blood residues, sediment, soil, shell, textiles, plant and animal tissue, insect remains, cave paintings, resins and glues).' How it works Carbon-14 has half-life of 5730 years Natural abundance of C-14 is one C-14 atom to one trillion C-12 atomsSample is purified physically and chemically in the 'pre-treatment lab' Sample is burnt at 900C turning it into CO2 which is combined with hydrogen and passed over an iron catalyst. Result is pure carbon and water. Graphite carbon pellet is placed at one end of linear accelerator Carbon atoms are 'chipped off' graphite pellet and sent through acceleratorComputer counts the three different types of carbon atoms at other end of accelerator Ratio of carbon-12 and carbon-14 atoms indicates age of sample.

Radiocarbon Dating - How It Works

02:26
How Radiocarbon Dating Works Dr. Erle Nelson, Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University "Radiocarbon dating works because in the upper atmosphere a very strange event takes place; cosmic rays from outer space come in and interact with the earth’s atmosphere and create a special form of carbon called radiocarbon. It’s a radioactive isotope of carbon which eventually decays. We know what its half-life is. We know that it has a regular decay rate – one half of it disappears every 5, 568 years. This stuff is created in the upper atmosphere and is quickly converted into ordinary carbon dioxide, except that this carbon dioxide has radiocarbon in it instead of ordinary carbon. That carbon dioxide is used by plants in their normal process of photosynthesis and therefore gets incorporated into the tissue of all of the plants on earth, and then gets further incorporated into the tissue of all of the animals that eat the plants, and so on. Radiocarbon dating is based on the fact that when these plants and animals stop taking up radiocarbon from the atmosphere, either directly in the case of plants, or indirectly in the case of animals, the concentration of radiocarbon in those tissues begins to decrease. If we find some old tissue lying around in an archaeological site, an old piece of charcoal or an old animal bone or something of that nature, we can measure the radiocarbon concentration in that tissue and from that we can determine the time elapsed since that particular plant or animal stopped incorporating carbon from its environment. That’s what a radiocarbon age is. It doesn’t give an age of an artefact, for example, directly, but it can tell us when a plant died or an animal died. In that sense, a charcoal date on charcoal found in a fireplace, for example, does not give an age for when that fire was lit, it tells you when the tree from which the charcoal was made died. And one has to keep these things in perspective when analyzing radiocarbon information."

• http://www.cassiopeiaproject.com
