Get pampered for less with our poor girl's spa recipes.
Women, men, who doesn't love to get pampered?! Of course, going to the spa or even buying products can really add up so we're going to make our own!
We called on Tamika Fletcher, co-owner of Natural Resources Hair Salon to help us out.
"I love making natural products at home and most of these things you probably all ready have in your cupboard and you just need to know how to put them together so you can make some really unique, cool products," she said.
And most importantly, we can save money!
COCONUT- LEMON NAIL SCRUB
2 teaspoons of salt
2 teaspoons of coconut oil
1 teaspoon of jojoba or almond oil)
Tamika says the salt is for the exfoliation, almond oil you'll use for moisture, coconut oil is for a conditioner and the lemon is for whitening the nail.
She prefers salt since it has a smaller grain and is a bit coarser to really exfoliate the cuticle
MOISTURIZING FULL BODY TREATMENT - COCOA BUTTER CAKES
1 cup of cocoa butter
1 teaspoon of your favorite herb
(soap mold or rubber ice tray)
For our Cocoa Cakes, Tamika used a mixture of different herbs including roses, calendula, lavender, horsetail and nettle which she says you can find at Whole Foods or any craft store that sells herbs.
First, melt your cocoa butter for about 2 minutes in the microwave Tamika sprinkles the herb mixture into a flexible, rubber mold and pours the cocoa butter on top. After a quick stir, she puts it in the freezer for about 15 minutes.
You can place it in your palm and use it all over or she says you can use it in the shower - the herbs are great for exfoliation. You could also drop a piece in the bath and let it melt.
BANANA AVOCADO FACE MASK
1/2 average size avocado mashed
1/2 ripe banana, mashed
Tablespoon of yogurt
Blend ingredients together and smooth on face. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and wipe off with wet cloth.
"The avocado is packed with minerals and vitamins and so to get the most benefit you want to use it right after you finish making it," Tamika said.
MANGO BODY POLISH
1 whole mango
1 tablespoon ground avocado pits
1 tablespoon of dried orange zest or coffee grains
Cut and peel the mango. Remove the avocado pit and put it in a zip top bag. Using a hammer, mash the seed into small pieces.
Blend all together and rub on body
Tamika says the avocado pit has tons of nutrients and lots of oil. The mango is great for adding brilliant shine to your skin all day.
"You would store this in the refrigerator if you plan to use it the day after or the next day, but the best thing to do with fresh products and fresh ingredients is to use them as soon as you make it," she said.
STRAWBERRY LEAF MOUTHWASH
1/4 cup fresh strawberry leaves
1 cup boiling water
2 teaspoons of lemon juice
Pour the boiling water over the strawberry leaves and let steep until the water has cooled.
Strain the leaves and add lemon juice
You could store this for up to a week to re-use
"Actually these are things you were going to throw the leaves away anyway so that's 100% savings," Tamika says.
Ultimate Earth's Nectar Hair Smoothie
1/2 ripe banana
1/4 teaspoon of molasses
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
2 teaspoons of mayo
1 tablespoon of yogurt
1 egg yolk
1 vitamin e capsule
Mix all ingredients together
Once the mixture is complete use on damp hair in the shower.
"I like to take my smoothie into the shower with me, after the shampoo I usually put it into a bottle that's easy to use, maybe a plastic bottle or something that won't slip in the shower," Tamika says. "Pour it all over the hair, massage into the hair, leave for 15 minutes, use a plastic cap and after you're done letting the moisturizer set, then rinse your hair clean and you'll have very soft manageable hair afterwards."
Tamika makes her own line of hair and skin products called Earth's Nectar, for more information check out her website: http://naturalresourcessalon.com/about-us.html
