Lessons in Military Leadership - Part 1
Recommended Reading List - https://warriorpoetsociety.us/reading-list/ Lessons in Military Leadership - This video covers the phases of taking a new private and developing them into a fully trained member of a team. I wish I had known then, what I know now. What I thought about military leadership came largely from simply replicating what I saw leaders around me doing (for better or for worse, and usually for worse), or what we had all seen in movies. In reality, leading soldiers should be a far more deliberate process that is predictable and can be really made successful by including some very surprising and rarely mentioned secrets. Tear them down, build them up, and then welcome them to the brotherhood. These lessons were gained during my time serving at 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. The Future of Strategic Military Leadership | Murphy Danahy | TEDxWestPoint
Murphy Danahy proposes that we must shift our paradigms about what makes a “good” military leader, and that failing to do so may cause us to lose our next big war. Utilizing several psychological studies about the way that people are hard wired to think, Danahy believes that he has found the key to improving military recruiting and retention programs. Murphy Danahy is a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. As a Cadet at the United States Military Academy, he was a Psychology major and was particularly interested in how US Army leadership development models have changed over time. He often applied psychological theories to normative analyses on the Army’s leadership evaluation methods. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Simon Sinek on How Military Leadership Styles Inspire Loyalty and Purpose
In Chapter 14 of 16 in his 2009 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, author Simon Sinek shares why United States Air Force General Lori Robinson's leadership style, humility, & purpose has created a loyal following. "Start With Why" author Sinek deconstructs General Robinson's leadership style and its empowering affect on others, including himself. View more Near Peer career video insights like this at http://www.captureyourflag.com Transcript: Erik Michielsen: Through your journey, you have spent some time working with the United States Air Force and met some incredible people there that inspired you. One was Brigadier General Lori Robinson. What did she teach you about humility and inspiration? Simon Sinek: Lori Robinson is one of the most gifted natural leaders I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. What is remarkable about her is that she is not what you would expect. It is not about power or fire and brimstone. She is very humble and, in fact, self deprecating a lot of the time. She has an undying belief. She knows her job is to show up and clear a path for others so they can succeed. She says I`m in the Air Force because I want to leave this country in better form than I found it. It is because she shows up to work everyday with that purpose it has accelerated her career but more importantly created a following for her. She is going to leave the Air Force in better shape than she found it and because of her this country will be left in better shape than when she found it. She is pretty remarkable.

Why was Napoleon so Successful?
Napoleon is considered by many one of the best – if not the best – military commanders of all time. Even Clausewitz, who wasn’t particularly fond of Napoleon, called him “the God of War”? What were the reasons for Napoleon’s success? Or was he just the most famous French general? Let’s look at his background, skill, traits, education, grand tactics, strategy, focus, the power of France and the French Revolution to see what allowed Napoleon to reach such a reputation that survived Waterloo. »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » RallyPoint - https://www.rallypoint.com/organizations/military-history-visualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. Leadership Lessons with Special Operations Veterans Kyle Lamb and John Lovell
Everything rises and falls on leadership. Whether we are talking about an NFL team, a massive corporation like Coca Cola, a military unit, or even a country, leadership can make or break any of these. The good news is, all leadership is based on the same principles and general wisdom. The bad news is, good leadership is difficult to find, and good leaders are few and far between. Though the recipe for good leadership is well known, the ability for folks to be able to rise to the challenge is quite a different story. In this video, Special Operations veterans Kyle Lamb and John Lovell discuss lessons in leadership. John asks Kyle questions about his book ‘Leadership in the Shadows’ and other questions relating to the essence of leadership, how to motivate people, leadership styles, how military experience can translate into the civilian world, and more. SGM (r) Kyle Lamb spent 21 years in the military with over 19 of those years in Special Operations and Special Forces, and over 15 of those years in Delta Force. Kyle Lamb fought in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), deploying numerous times to fight in Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF), and many other conflicts to include fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993. The book and movie Black Hawk Down would be based on the events that transpired in the streets of Somalia with Army Rangers, the Army’s 10th mountain division, and Delta Force. SGM (r) Kyle Lamb led soldiers throughout his long and distinguished career in military Special Operations, and he continues to lead through his company Viking Tactics (also known as V-Tac), and through a number of other mediums to include a TV Show called Viking Chronicles, a podcast from Crusader Acres, through numerous articles he writes for firearm channels, and through social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Why good leaders make you feel safe | Simon Sinek
What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety — especially in an uneven economy — means taking on big responsibility. Tom Ricks: U.S. Military Leadership In Decline
01:39 What do you think the Petraeus story tells us? 05:24 Are there heroes anymore? 10:42 Do generals today get fired for combat ineffectiveness? 14:03 For which reasons should a general be fired? 16:24 Looking back over the last ten years, do you think a different approach to dealing with bad leadership would have resulted in different outcomes or a faster exit from a Iraq or a better position in Afghanistan? 19:58 Where should the line of accountability exist between generals and civilian leaders who order the generals? 25:28 On Afghanistan, the "war of inattention" and "casual arrogance." 27:46 The peril of a ground war in Afghanistan. 30:40 What feedback have you gotten from the generals of the last decade? Audience Q&A 31:37 Why was Gen. Schwarzkopf considered such an excellent general? 36:02 Can the military fight insurgents? 40:07 You said the wisdom is not to fire a general unless you have a better one in mind? How do you ensure this? 41:38 Isn't this the best educated force? What does that tell us? 48:15 What is your opinion of universal public service versus an all-volunteer force? http://hillcenterdc.org Foreign Policy editor Susan B. Glasser interviews Thomas E. Ricks, author of THE GENERALS: American Military Command from World War II to Today Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas E. Ricks discusses his new book in conversation with Foreign Policy editor-in-chief Susan Glasser. A book signing will follow the conversation. Books will be available for purchase. From the bestselling author of FIASCO and THE GAMBLE comes an epic history of the decline of American military leadership from WW II to Iraq. History has been kinder to the American generals of World War II -- Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, and Bradley -- than to the generals of the wars that followed. Is this merely nostalgia? In THE GENERALS, Thomas E. Ricks answers the question definitively: No, it is not, in no small part because of a widening gulf between performance and accountability. Ricks has made a close study of America's military leaders for three decades and in his hands this story resounds with larger meaning: about the transmission of values, about strategic thinking, about the difference between an organization that learns and one that fails. This is military history of the highest order. Ricks is a fellow at the Center for New American Security and a contributing editor to Foreign Policy, the magazine of global politics. Ricks covered the U.S. military for The Washington Post from 2000 to 2008. Prior to becoming editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy, Susan Glasser spent four years as co-chief of The Washington Post's Moscow bureau and covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Glasser previously worked for eight years at the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, where she rose to be the top editor. With her husband, New York Times White House correspondent Peter Baker, she is the author of Kremlin Rising: Vladimir Putin's Russia and the End of Revolution.
