What do the Oracle/Google shenanigans mean to the Java Developer?
Recent news about the legal battle which Oracle and Google have been involved with in the courts has made many Java developers wonder what this actually means to them. Should they be careful about what and how they code in the future to avoid legal repercussions? What do they need to understand or know going forward? Is this just a problem for Java or development in general? Following on from the recent vJug discussion, this session session is led by some of the key stalwarts in our industry, who will aim to provide opinions of what the news means to them. We also have a patent attorney present, but it should be noted that you should seek professional legal advice if you rely on it. This session will be in discussion format and will be heavily focused on Q&A by the audience. Joining Martijn and Ben on this panel are Stephen Colebourne and Ted Neward. Come along, get involved and air your views. This could be lively. Authors: Martijn Verburg Martijn Verburg (aka 'the Diabolical Developer') herds Cats in the Java/open source communities and is constantly humbled by the creative power to be found there. Currently he resides in London where he co-leads the London JUG (a JCP EC member), runs a couple of open source projects & drinks too much beer at his local pub. You can find him online moderating at the Javaranch or discussing (ranting?) subjects on the Programmers Stack Exchange site. Most recently he's become a regular speaker at conferences on Java, open source and software development and has recently wrapped up his first Manning title - "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" with his co-author Ben Evans. Ben Snipe Ben Snipe is a Chartered patent attorney with many years’ experience in patenting of hi-tech inventions. He has handled many complex patent applications for various blue chip companies such as Nokia and Vodafone, as well as many for many startups.

Oracle Vs Google : Bad instructions from the judge?
Tech Babble S3 E63 : 05/01/2012 OK know this is being re hashed to death, but honestly wanted to take a fe min to address just what the jusde has told the jury to do. And honestly how in IMO it is not giid to tell the jury to ignore the law to make decide their verdict... The jury is affective being told to disregard the whole key issue of the case, and render a verdict independent of the law, that the judge will then decide if it should be applied or not. Not sure that is correct. The 2 main issues are can APIs even be copyright, and can you retroactively change a license agreement?

Oracle wrote in the court filing, "Mr. Page also participated in negotiations that took place between Sun and Google regarding a Java license for Android and in subsequent communications with Oracle's CEO, Larry Ellison. Representatives of Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while an Oracle spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter. U.S. Supreme Court Declines to Hear Google Appeal in Oracle Software Fight
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear Google Inc's appeal in a major software copyright case, leaving intact a ruling that would allow Oracle Corp to charge licensing fees for the use of some of its Java programing language. The high court left in place a May 2014 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in favor of Oracle. Google had argued it should be free to use Java without paying a licensing fee. The case involved how much copyright protection should extend to the Java programing language. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/RWA1-HjklLs/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Oracle Sun merger gets green light
The long-awaited decision over Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems has finally been made by the European Commission. In a statement following the announcement, the software giant says it expects "unconditional approval from China and Russia and intends to close the transaction shortly". Oracle has been waiting since September last year for the Commission to rule whether the acquisition would be anti-competitive. A major concern of the merger was if it could lead to higher licence and support prices for the product. Michael 'Monty' Widenius, MySQL's creator, even launched a 'SaveMySQL' petition to try to influence the Commission's decision. But the Commission says the investigation showed that "although MySQL and Oracle compete in certain parts of the database market, they're not close competitors in others, such as the high-end segment".
Google and Oracle trial starts
In one of the most important legal battles to hit the technology world in recent years, the trial pitting Internet giant Google against software giant Oracle has begun. The case, which begun in San Francisco this week, revolves around alleged patent and copyright abuse by Google while developing its Android operating system. The core of the case relates to the Java software language which Oracle acquired in 2010 when it bought Sun Microsystems. Oracle claims Google knowingly ignored the need to licence this software while developing its hugely successful Android platform, which is in use on over 300 million smartphones and tablets worldwide. US District Judge William Alsup empaneled a jury of seven men and five women on the opening day of the trial, which could last up to ten weeks. Oracle, in its opening statements, said: "You can't just step on somebody's intellectual property because you have a good business reason for it." The trial continues today.

What is an API?
What exactly is an API? Finally learn for yourself in this helpful video from MuleSoft, the API experts. https://www.mulesoft.com/platform/api The textbook definition goes something like this: “An application programming interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. An API expresses a software component in terms of its operations, inputs, outputs, and underlying types. An API defines functionalities that are independent of their respective implementations, which allows definitions and implementations to vary without compromising each other. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. APIs often come in the form of a library that includes specifications for routines, data structures, object classes, and variables. In other cases, notably SOAP and REST services, an API is simply a specification of remote calls exposed to the API consumers. An API specification can take many forms, including an International Standard, such as POSIX, vendor documentation, such as the Microsoft Windows API, or the libraries of a programming language, e.g., the Standard Template Library in C++ or the Java APIs. An API differs from an application binary interface (ABI) in that an API is source code-based while an ABI is a binary interface. For instance POSIX is an API, while the Linux Standard Base provides an ABI”. To speak plainly, an API is the messenger that runs and delivers your request to the provider you’re requesting it from, and then delivers the response back to you. To give you a familiar example, think of an API as a waiter in a restaurant. Imagine you’re sitting at the table with a menu of choices to order from, and the kitchen is the provider who will fulfill your order. What’s missing is the critical link to communicate your order to the kitchen and deliver your food back to your table. That’s where the waiter (or API) comes in. ”AHEM” The waiter takes your order, delivers it to the kitchen, and then delivers the food (or response) back to you. (Hopefully without letting your order crash if designed correctly) Now that we’ve whetted your appetite, let’s apply this to a real API example. In keeping with our theme, let’s book a flight to a culinary capital – Paris. You’re probably familiar with the process of searching for airline flights online. Just like at a restaurant, you have a menu of options to choose from ( a dropdown menu in this case). You choose a departure city and date, a return city and date, cabin class, and other variables (like meal or seating, baggage or pet requests) In order to book your flight, you interact with the airline’s website to access the airline’s database to see if any seats are available on those dates, and what the cost might be based on certain variables. But, what if you are not using the airline’s website, which has direct access to the information? What if you are using online travel service that aggregates information from many different airlines? Just like a human interacts with the airline’s website to get that information, an application interacts with the airline’s API. The API is the interface that, like your helpful waiter, runs and and delivers the data from that online travel service to the airline’s systems over the Internet. It also then takes the airline’s response to your request and delivers right back to the online travel service . And through each step of the process it facilitates that interaction between the travel service and the airline’s systems - from seat selection to payment and booking. So now you can see that it’s APIs that make it possible for us all to use travel sites. They interface with with airlines’ APIs to gather information in order to present options back to us The same goes for all interactions between applications, data and devices - they all have API’s that allow computers to operate them, and that's what ultimately creates connectivity. API’s provide a standard way of accessing any application, data or device whether it is shopping from your phone, or accessing cloud applications at work. So, whenever you think of an API, just think of it as your waiter running back and forth between applications, databases and devices to deliver data and create the connectivity that puts the world at our fingertips. And whenever you think of creating an API, think MuleSoft.

There are many meet and greet opportunities at OpenWorld, such as the America's Cup for sailing enthusiasts, the Welcome Reception, and the Appreciation Event featuring artists such as Maroon 5 and The Black Keys. Can Oracle shine in the Cloud? Oracle is a dominant player in relational databases but its high licensing fees leave a bitter aftertaste in customers' mouths. Aside from that, it has been stubborn in adapting to the growing world of Big Data, Hadoop, and NoSQL. "Oracle's proprietary, closed technology, and its lock-in approach to its customer base, along with its monolithic, vertically integrated technology, is a sharp contrast to the horizontal build-out approach based on Open Systems that typifies the new reality in IT," SiliconANGLE's Bert Latamore pointed out. But Oracle may be turning things around, having recently unveiled a major upgrade with an upcoming In-Memory switch to boost virtualization capabilities for managing apps, and the ZS3-2 and ZS3-4 storage products, both deemed a huge step up in its offerings. Wikibon CTO and Co-founder David Floyer stated that the two products deliver Tier-1 performance but at Tier-3 prices. Oracle's proactive developments across hardware and software are starting to pay off, as the company's stock prices and revenue are cautiously returning to comfortable levels. "[I]t is our belief that Oracle is providing the R&D muscle that Sun lacked and focusing its efforts on the ZFS appliance, which is a diamond in the Oracle storage portfolio rough. We expect Oracle to continue to enhance the platform and broaden its uses cases. Moreover we believe that Oracle, the company with a reputation for lock-in, will attempt to lock-out competitors by increasingly leveraging integration up the stack while the competition searches for answers to the Oracle integration strategy," Floyer stated.
