Leadership Styles in Nursing Management

00:55
http://smarturl.it/hlp - Dr. Ursula speaks on the importance of leadership in healthcare. Her new book Healthcare Leadership Practices: How to Conquer Nursing Shortages by Improving Engagement and Retention covers indepth topics such as: * Importance of Leadership in Healthcare Organizations * Leadership Styles in Nursing Management * Transformational Leadership in Nursing Examples * Transformational Leadership in Healthcare * Leaders in Healthcare Industry * Management and Leadership Theories in Nursing * Leadership in Healthcare Essential Values and Skills * Leadership Qualities in Healthcare BOOK DESCRIPTION: Healthcare Leadership Practices: How to Conquer Nursing Shortages by Improving Engagement and Retention, explores the root causes of the enduring nursing shortages, its effects in the current healthcare environment, and strategies to conquer the shortages. Appropriate nurse staffing levels are critical to providing optimal quality of care, proactively and effectively mitigate clinical risks, and maintain safe environments of care for patients. Why is the nursing shortage taking such a long time to resolve? What role can healthcare organizations play to stop the bleeding, engage nurses, and increase retention in the nursing workforce? In this book, Dr. Bell leverages results of an outstanding study at a 493 bed Magnet-designated acute care hospital to shed perspectives from clinical professionals on plausible strategies to curb the nursing shortage. The establishment, sustainability and standardization of processes and strategies that support nurses’ work environments rest upon the shoulders of healthcare leaders. She confirms that fixing the nursing shortage is not easy but we can begin resolving the problem by understanding what nurses say will motivate them, curb attrition, and increase engagement and retention rates. Organizational culture, leadership practices and shared values are significant in the engagement and retention of nurses. Clinical leadership styles need to evolve to incorporate leadership practices that are desirable for nursing work environments. Transactional vs. Transformational Leadership Definition

10:00
Transformational Leadership Vs. Transactional Leadership Definition Different managers employ distinctly different management styles, ranging from relatively hands-off, facilitative styles to autocratic, micromanaging styles. Managers can also employ different motivational strategies and techniques to boost employee performance or accomplish internal change. Transformational and transactional leadership are polar opposites when it comes to the underlying theories of management and motivation. Understanding the difference between transformational and transactional leadership is crucial for anyone pursuing a career in management. Visit http://richtopia.com/effective-leadership/transactional-myth for more info. Transactional Leadership Transactional leadership styles are more concerned with maintaining the normal flow of operations. Transactional leadership can be described as "keeping the ship afloat." Transactional leaders use disciplinary power and an array of incentives to motivate employees to perform at their best. The term "transactional" refers to the fact that this type of leader essentially motivates subordinates by exchanging rewards for performance. A transactional leader generally does not look ahead in strategically guiding an organization to a position of market leadership; instead, these managers are solely concerned with making sure everything flows smoothly today. Transformational Leadership A transformational leader goes beyond managing day-to-day operations and crafts strategies for taking his company, department or work team to the next level of performance and success. Transformational leadership styles focus on team-building, motivation and collaboration with employees at different levels of an organization to accomplish change for the better. Transformational leaders set goals and incentives to push their subordinates to higher performance levels, while providing opportunities for personal and professional growth for each employee. Related Reading: Four Elements of Transformational Leadership Advantages Both leadership styles are needed for guiding an organization to success. Transactional leaders provide distinct advantages through their abilities to address small operational details quickly. Transactional leaders handle all the details that come together to build a strong reputation in the marketplace, while keeping employees productive on the front line. Transformational leadership styles are crucial to the strategic development of a small business. Small businesses with transformational leaders at the helm shoot for ambitious goals, and can they achieve rapid success through the vision and team-building skills of the leader. Applications Different management styles are best suited to different situations. When it comes to front-line supervisors of minimum-wage employees, for example, a transactional leadership style can be more effective. Shift supervisors at a fast food restaurant will be much more effective if they are concerned with ensuring all of the various stations run smoothly, rather than spending their time thinking up better ways to serve hamburgers. On the other hand, CEOs or sales managers can be more effective if they are transformational leaders. Executive managers need the ability to design and communicate grand strategic missions, passing the missions down to transactional leaders for implementation of the details. Visit http://richtopia.com/effective-leadership/transactional-myth for more info.

Leadership Styles: The Autocratic Leader

01:45
Can an autocratic leader be respected? Is this leadership style still in vogue? Absolutely! If your organization is going through change or uncertainty, a leader who "calls the shots" can provide a sense of stability. This is not to be confused with being dictatorial. An autocratic style can serve a positive purpose when an organization has gone through rocky times, or finds itself in a constant state of flux. This is the leader who can offer a prescriptive solution and a strategic direction that was previously lacking. They can put an end to the chaos by displaying confidence, composure and strong leadership. Great leadership starts with self-leadership | Lars Sudmann | TEDxUCLouvain

12:47
At TEDxUtopia, the question was asked: What would leadership in Utopia look like? To start with, imagine the best leader you have ever worked with. How did he or she get to become this type of leader? Leadership lecturer and former corporate executive Lars Sudmann argues that it's likely that they learned to overcome the "leadership formula of doom" and then developed themselves as a leader. In this funny and invigorating talk Lars walks us through the personal journeys of great leaders, shows lessons from the golden age of leadership and shares 3 strategies on self-leadership to develop yourself into a "Utopia leader”. Lars Sudmann is a leadership advisor and award-winning lecturer. He studies and researches what makes the most advanced organizations and leaders successful – and then he shares that knowledge with the world. Trends/Tendance, the Belgian Business Magazine, and the BBC have called on his expertise. Additionally, he is currently a university lecturer in Aachen and Braunschweig (both Germany). What does leadership in Utopia look like? How does leadership work in a future ultra-networked world? And is there one leadership ideal that we can all strive towards, and if yes, what is holding us back from achieving it? In this highly engaging talk, leadership expert Lars Sudmann will dive into the past, present and future of excellent leadership. Autocratic Leadership = Boss-centered leadership with a high power distance between the leader and the employees. Democratic Leadership = Team-centered leadership. The Best Leadership Style for Continuous Improvement

04:56
Developing a leadership style to support continuous improvement http://www.optimusperformance.ca/deve... Continuous improvement is crucial for the ongoing success and growth of any business and organization. Your leadership style can either promote or hinder people practicing continuous improvement. I’ll talk about that in this video. In a previous article and video http://www.optimusperformance.ca/using-what-if-for-continuous-improvement-creativity-and-better-team-collaboration-2/), I talked about how to get employees to be more creative and drive continuous improvement. I spoke about three key components, which were the type of person (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/unde...), the level of self-esteem and self-confidence of people (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/improving-employees-self-esteem-and-self-confidence-2/) thirdly, the culture of the company and the style of leadership. The culture of an organization is driven by the values (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/how-...), beliefs and the style of leadership of top management. Thus, the leaders of organizations must evolve in their thinking and leadership style in order to drive continuous improvement from employees. A participative leadership style is required to promote and support continuous improvement from employees. It necessitates taking a proactive approach to solving problems, rather than being reactive. This means practicing prevention rather than fighting fires. It also means developing autonomous teams comprised of team members who are mature enough to facilitate problem-solving sessions in their respective teams or department. This requires training on team problem-solving development, which includes interpersonal communication skills and problem-solving techniques. You cannot expect to just put a group of people together and presume they will work as a team. Just because people get along with each other does not mean that they are working as a team. Teams need to grow from the stage of dependency to an interdependent state where they function more autonomously. Working this way they are able to step back from the day-to-day tasks and brainstorm to find ways to make improvements and then propose well thought out solutions to management. A participative leadership style does not mean total democracy in decision-making. There are times when leaders need to take charge and be more autocratic in their style. But there needs to be a balance between controlling everything and having employees participate in decision-making and problem-solving. Everyone has ideas and experience that they can contribute towards continuous improvement. Certain types of people (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/unde...) embrace participating in these activities while others may shy away from it. The challenge is to get everyone to participate and this is why team development and problem-solving training is imperative. Trust is another crucial element for employee involvement in continuous improvement. Trust needs to be established at all levels, between leaders and employees and also amongst employees and within teams. Creating a mindset throughout an organization that promotes people practicing continuous improvement takes time and commitment on the part of leadership. Leaders need to assure adequate coaching and support to employees in order to go from simple task execution to continuously finding new and better ways to do things. Any organization that clearly sees the benefits of performing continuous improvement and makes a commitment to the process can only reap great rewards. Leadership Skills - Do These 7 Things If You Want to Become a Leader

03:48
Do These 7 Things If You Want to Become a Leader. https://youtu.be/NnxKkw3BmVM ....................................... How do you get noticed as an up-and-coming leader, one who is a key member of the team? How do you set yourself apart so that you will be identified for career success ahead of others? With a few consistent actions, you can develop your leadership potential, set yourself apart from the ordinary employee and be noticed as a future leader ahead of your peers. 1. Be a team player. According to the Center for Creative Leadership’s World Leadership Survey, organizations are looking for leaders who are collaborative, inclusive and team-oriented. Helping your team deal with conflict, develop cohesion and work together will quickly set you apart to team leaders and managers. 2. Lead from where you are. A leader isn’t always identified by a title. One of the most difficult things to do—but something that will get you noticed—is leading while not formally in charge. Improving communications and taking on difficult tasks gets you noticed by team leaders and managers. When it’s time for managers to move on to other opportunities, they will likely think of you first as the right one to move into their position. 3. Be an expert, but learn and master new skills. Performing well in your current role is an excellent way to get noticed. After that, look around and identify what additional skills and jobs you can master. Stay on top of changes in your career field. Senior managers will notice people who have already demonstrated a willingness and aptitude to perform at a higher level, and who are eager to learn. 4. Be open to feedback and criticism, and use it to grow. Ask your supervisor for corrective feedback. It might be difficult, but it demonstrates you are not only comfortable with your abilities, but that you take your career growth seriously and are willing to learn from mistakes. When you are criticized or you make a mistake, own it. Ask your manager to describe what the right approach would have been, so you have a clear expectation of what they would have done. 5. Demonstrate a firm understanding of client needs. Up-and-coming leaders set themselves apart by looking for ways to improve products and streamline processes. Use every opportunity to communicate with customers to find out their wants and needs. Identifying ways to save money, while improving client experience, gets you noticed by senior managers because it also benefits their own careers. 6. Learn to communicate well. Future leaders learn to speak and write well. They convey a clear understanding of what needs to be done and why. Speak truthfully and accurately—rather than emotionally—about challenges facing a task or project, and then give positive recommendations about how to overcome them. 7. Take actions and make recommendations for the good of the organization, not you. Senior managers want employees who are fearlessly loyal to them and their team. When making recommendations that conflict with what’s going on, articulate in a positive way how it will be advantageous for the organization and the client. When it’s time to take credit, give it to the entire team. You will gain their loyalty, knowing your motives are for the good of the organization and not yourself. Thanks For Watching. Management vs Leadership

05:34
This videos looks at management vs leadership skills by comparing the similarities and differences between leaders and managers to give you the opportunity to see where you fit the picture. FREE 7 Instant Tips for Confident & Composed Public Speaking http://bit.ly/2M1NfVE-SpeakingTips Before digging in, the first takeaway is that managers are tied to an official position. Leaders can lead from anywhere. Further, there are no 100% managers or 100% leaders. Virtually everybody has to do some aspect of both. Managers: - Control mindset - Administration of process and resources - Want to maintain the status quo - Task-focused Leaders: - Persuasive communication - Want to take us from "here to there" - Take Risks - People focused Sources Consulted: Alex Lyon's Book: Case Studies in Courageous Communication: https://www.amazon.com/Case-Studies-Courageous-Organizational-Communication/dp/1433131242/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1483651791&sr=1-1 https://www.amazon.com/Leading-Here-There-Study-Guide/dp/0310080878/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486765986&sr=8-1&keywords=from+here+to+there+bill+hybels http://guides.wsj.com/management/developing-a-leadership-style/what-is-the-difference-between-management-and-leadership/ http://www.educational-business-articles.com/leadership-versus-management/ https://www.simplilearn.com/leadership-vs-management-difference-article https://www.resourcefulmanager.com/leaders-vs-managers/ https://hbr.org/2013/08/tests-of-a-leadership-transiti My Current Camera Gear (Affiliate Links): Camera Rebel T5i https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BW6LWO4/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00BW6LWO4&linkId=504e12f13100f143d4df4e79731f206a Lens Canon 50mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X8MRBCW/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00X8MRBCW&linkId=b0bfb7ea7439df39e744bfd303c53fee Lavalier Microphone Rode Smartlav+: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EO4A7L0/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00EO4A7L0&linkId=c29c80d531374d347f8a78498b34d05d Audio Recorder: Tascam DR-05: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OU2IQG/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004OU2IQG&linkId=578b149b5807f2ec0f7f16c18e1c34f4
Understanding & Leveraging Leadership Styles

09:29
What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. Combination of leadership styles means success

02:43
Servant leaders are just as effective as transformational leaders. New research by Associate Professor Dirk van Dierendonck of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) shows that combining transformational and servant leadership benefits organisations the most. A mix of the two will generate more commitment to the organisation among employees and will get them more engaged and enthusiastic about their work -- even in times of a crisis.
