Presentations - Students of Product Design Episode 7

22:28
Students of product design episode 7 covers how to give a concept design presentation to a small group, but the techniques can be used for presentations to much larger audiences and will also help with portfolio presentations. A concept design presentation doesn't begin when you sit down in front of the client with a set of drawings, or when you're preparing those drawings a week before. It starts the moment you first meet the client, you need to build relationships. One key to this is to just be interested in the client, people are interesting and with just about everything in life things always go far better if you show you're interested in them. I once saw a quote by Bill Nye, 'Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't'. So before the presentation, keep talking to your main contact, keep them updated with progress, be interested in what they're up to and their suggestions, good design, good relationships, good business is about continuous communication. The presentation doesn't end once you have shown the last concepts either. You need to close the presentation, by managing expectations, letting the client know when you will need a response to hit the next deadline, helping the client reach an informed decision, agreeing the next stage etc. With any set of concepts, you'll have your favourite, often there's one that's stronger than the others, but any one of the designs a client chooses will be a good outcome, because they will be one of you or your teams designs, you can't loose, unless the client doesn't like any of them. If theres a design you're presenting that you really don't want them to choose, why is it in your presentation. Unless you have to present a series of concepts that a group of people came up with. Then there may be one you don't like, because we all like different things, but as long as it answers the brief, doesn't create confusion or you can't give a strong argument for leaving it out, then it should be included it in your presentation, to give the client breadth of choice. This is important to consider when you work in a team and also a good argument if it is your design that another member is trying to exclude. There are masses of useful links out there to help so as promised in the video, here are some links not necessarily specific to product design which I like and think will be useful: http://muledesign.com/2014/09/13-ways-designers-screw-up-client-presentations https://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/03/19/5-tips-on-how-to-prepare-a-design-presentation/ http://www.richardbaird.co.uk/2012/05/10/the-designers-guide-to-presentation/ http://www.proedgeskills.com/Presentation_Skills_Articles/difficult_questions.htm This is a good link to how to deal with clients who want to feature creep: https://community.uservoice.com/blog/when-to-build-requested-feature/ In the video I briefly cover how to calm nerves and one relaxation technique that has really helped me, relaxing my shoulders. This is a good link to more relaxation techniques and ways to deal with nerves. http://www.inc.com/larry-kim/15-power-up-tips-to-make-you-a-better-presenter.html http://www.skillsyouneed.com/present/presentation-nerves.html http://lifehacker.com/how-to-calm-your-nerves-before-making-a-terrifying-spee-1677504967 Finally if you have specific questions not answered by a Google search, then you can always post a question on the forums at core77.com to get advice from industry professionals. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 7' and it helps when you have to give a concept design presentation. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

chopping board transforms into bowl - product design

02:04
A chopping board prototype design that turns into a bowl and back again for transporting chopped vegetables and or meats to a pan for cooking. In the continuing story of Product Tank and his adventures in product design, I have developed this design to make food preparation easier, safer and more fun. The design is simple to use and easy to clean. The prototype is made from wood and polypropylene, but in production would be made from food safe plastic and have live hinges, so that it can be manufactured in one piece. Towards the end of the video I show how one design idea can spark another - as I have taken the mechanism and tried to apply it to a wheel barrow design. The finished result can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EQUBuTHTmA&list=UUxyQKi7ipjA3Cz-VQUYanNQ&feature=share&index=1 more on my website: www.producttank.co.uk

Research - Students of Product Design - Episode 2

13:31
In this second espisode for Students of Product design I'm looking at research. As a student I was often tempted to skip the research phase of a design project and jump straight into sketching concepts, because that was where I felt most comfortable. It wasn't until I was employed as a product designer that I realised how important product design research is. As I've stated in the video, product design is for people, so you have to research their struggles, motivations and desires, otherwise you'll just end up designing things for yourself. Research improves the quality and outcome of your projects. Design Research is quite a difficult subject to tackle in a YouTube video and a lot of the time the only way to learn is to simply get out and talk to people, ask questions and develop your communication skills. It's also important whenever possible that you record your research, so you can review it to see what insight people have given you, to analyse where you can improve and when you're a student, to prove to your tutor that you haven't spent the whole time in bed! Research is the one thing many industrial design students don't do enough in university. There is often a barrier to it, because students feel they should be spending their time learning other skills like sketching and CAD, for some reason, talking to people requires confidence, which is why students often hide behind surveys put up on forums. If you are confident you can ask people in the street, but if you want to start with something less intimidating, talk to family and friends, or join a discussion club, but don't ignore doing research, it's at the core of good product design. I hope you enjoy Students of Product Design Episode 2, further reading can be found below: A great resource for design research: http://www.uxbooth.com/articles/complete-beginners-guide-to-design-research/ Watch out for leading questions: http://researchaccess.com/2013/07/leading-questions/ If you need responses from professionals and a great resource for all things product design: www.core77.com http://boards.core77.com www.producttank.co.uk

Bruscair Boards

02:21
Bruscair Boards process and product demonstration video. Produced as part of my final year project for my degree in Industrial Design at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin. Project Statement: Currently, there are no economically-feasible methods in place to recycle foil-lined plastic packaging waste. As a result, tonnes of this potentially valuable material enter land fill each day. 'Bruscair Boards' was a project that set out to tackle this issue by promoting a new application for this 'waste' material. Through accessible, small scale manufacturing, this material is transformed into functional and desirable products, prolonging its life past the intended disposal and highlighting its ability as a valuable design resource. The aim was to create awareness around this issue, challenging common perceptions and inviting the viewer to question waste; what creates it and what becomes of it. Want to give a huge thanks to everyone who helped throughout the project and a massive thanks to Sean Clarke who filmed and edited this video. The superiority of mechanical standards in product design and development – single board computers

02:13
This video discusses Single Board Computers and the benefits of having mechanical standards in your product development. Single Board Computing provides businesses and individuals with complete, powerful computing solutions for a wide variety of situations - all without costly design or specialty manufacturing. As an example, this is the PC104 board that contains a CPU and various I/O connections. Adding an I/O module like the DMM-32D-AT allows this processor to control real world inputs. As it is Plug and Play, there is no design process required. Where does mechanical standardization fit in? Mechanical standards are a variety of design dimensions that components can be based on. Manufacturing a new component according to one of the ‘standards’ ensures compatibility between different models of components, within that same mechanical standard. For example, this CM-920 CPU board is built to the PCI-104_Express standard. So when it needs replacing, we simply install the new board that has the same standardized format. Conversely, if non-standardized Single Boards Computers are used in product design, this could mean additional costs in appointing an engineer to design the mechanical fit of the board and interconnecting boards . This limitation may further inhibit the ability to incorporate newer technology into the product. Mechanical Standardization - like what is applied to all the SBC’s from Micromax Technology - makes keeping up with evolving technology fast and cost-effective, while ensuring there are no surprise costs for needing to redesign a product. Micromax Technology truly believes in the superiority of designs with standardization and only sells SBC’s that have mechanical standards and longevity. If you would like to discuss your specific application with a Micromax Technology Engineer or to order SBC products please contact us. http://micromaxtechnology.com

LOADS. And we've also been training people from some of the biggest companies in the world on how to run them. Ever since we started doing Design Sprints, we began looking for ways to hack the process... because, why not! We found there were a couple of major pain points that we wanted to fix, so we experimented and eventually came up with a few ways to make the process work even better for us. We're also running trainings with Jake Knapp (the inventor of the Sprint) and he has not only approved our hacks, but he's now using them himself! What a guy!! Prototyping Electronic Products

02:20
A prototype helps you verify that your product design works before you go to manufacturing. To get an accurate picture you need to prototype your complete product, including circuit boards, housings and other mechanical components. You can source the various prototype parts yourself from different suppliers. But you will usually save time, have fewer headaches, and spend less money if your contract manufacturer can produce a fully-integrated prototype encompassing all the electronic and mechanical aspects. This video shows a few of the prototyping capabilities you should look for.

(an example: product and vendor images are always presented nested in a background as a .jpg in stores like Restoration Hardware or West Elm to name only 2 of them) - which forces designers to rule them out when working on their boards unless the product and vendor image is already in the correct file format (.tiff, .png, ect.) in a store's ready-made product and vendor image library with the backgrounds already removed from the product and vendor images that the interior designer is working on. Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology

04:42
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem.
