Lean Patient Experience - How to empower patients and help them change their habits? https://youtu.be/JabSJ22j3Ns Dr. Harpreet Singh has invented Benzene Loop to improve patient experience and make it lean. He was inspired by New York Bestseller—The Power of Habit Loop written by Charles Duhigg’s, Nir Eyal’s Hooked, Dr. Kelly McGonigal's Willpower Instinct, Roy Baumeister & John Tierney’s Willpower and thousands of journal articles. His Benzene Loop is the game changer and the habit changer, and he has incorporated all the business ideas to develop a robust model for the Lean Patient Experience. All the six bonds of the Benzene Loop represent parts of the habit/hooked loop and the willpower loop. This Benzene Loop is the Habit+Willpower Loop and has been a game changer in his practice, and he is using this to improve his patient experience score. In Lean Patient Experience, Dr. Singh adapted the word Lean from the Toyota Production System. The word Lean also is an acronym developed by Dr. Harpreet Singh Listen→ Educate→ Activate→ eNgage. Why Lean Patient Experience? Dr. Harpreet Singh uses Vital Checklist for patient education. He does not believe in just handing out pamphlets. His modus operandi is to educate patients with the help of Vital Checklist and two-dimensional pictures. Once you listen, educate, activate and engage with patients, caregivers can pick up the verbal and non-verbal cues which may be the pain points for the patients and trigger the internal emotions this leading to action or changing their routine. Patients or people change their habits in anticipation of the reward. It drives this Cue-Routine-Reward theory from Charles Duhigg book-The Power of Habit Loop. Nir Eyal has gone even further and explained more elaborately in his book—Hooked. He tells about the investment or effort increases the lifetime value of the product. He explains more time you spend with the product, more attached you will become to it. However, to change patients habits, we need to give autonomy to patients to make shared decisions. There has been a tremendous amount of research on motivational interviewing, but Dr. Singh believes that doctors should facilitate patient to make shared decisions or autonomous decisions. He shares a story about a patient who he saw in the clinic and was not using a cane. His patient had positive Romberg's maneuver, and Dr. Singh asked him a simple question, “Do you want to stay in your own home or Do you want to live in the nursing home?” For patients, sometimes we have to tell the consequences, and we cannot stop at the reward. This question was a home run as patient understood that he might fall and may have to live in the nursing home. Notice the word live and stay. Dr. Singh used these words on-purpose. Dr. Singh also calls this the autonomous question or a nursing home question. Two other books on Willpower which has inspired him are Dr. Kelly McGonigal's Willpower Instinct and Roy Baumeister & John Tierney’s Willpower. The willpower question completes the bottom part of the Benzene Loop. Dr. McGonical’s mentions three components of the willpower — I Want Power, I Won’t Power, I Will Power and Dr. Singh has used these ideas and incorporated this in the Benzene Loop. For example, if you are trying to build a new exercise routine, a trigger goal for yourself could be to get dressed in your workout clothing 4 days that week. This will make you more likely to stick with your larger goal, and ultimately change your life. Step #3: Set improvement goals. Improvement goals are numbers with a date attached to them. These goals will help you set up a feedback loop so you can measure if you're moving towards your goal or not. Step #4: Gather a tribe. This could be a coach, mentor, online community or even a friend who has gone through what you're going through before. These are people who can cheer you on as you change your life. Step #5: Script your setbacks. Prepare for setbacks by knowing how you'll deal with them as they come up. Anticipate how you'll feel and react ahead of time so you're prepared and ready to respond in a way that won't throw you off your goal. Many of us struggle with feeling unattractive and insecure or never feeling good enough or pretty enough. Most of the false beliefs we have come from our environment, childhood, what we read and watch, our family and the society we live in which constantly feeds us a very unrealistic idea of confidence and beauty. And yes, some services and skin care product can help us feel better about ourselves, however, if we don't feel whole inside, then what we do on the outside is temporary and never enough. When we become overly concerned with our skin and our appearance, obsession kicks in and we are more likely to not accept our imperfections and pick ourselves apart. It's a very bad habit that can be changed. (I know you can do this. ) This insanity is driven by the mind and the beauty industry knows it. And it is our responsibility to not get lost in distraction or the media that wants all of your attention and your $$$. Accepting ourselves ( wrinkles and all) is the key. If we don't learn how to o accept our imperfection, then we are missing out on knowing how incredible we already are. Practice the following for thirty days three times a day when looking in the mirror: 1. Every time you look in the mirror, find three things that you like about your face. Doing this will train your mind to look for the good instead of "what's wrong." Start small. Find anything. 2. Once you do this for a week or so, see if you can feel the emotion of love or appreciation for what you find and like. This will give you better and quicker results. This really works.
