You can create subpartitions in a composite partitioned table using a subpartition template. A subpartition template simplifies the specification of subpartitions by not requiring that a subpartition descriptor be specified for every partition in the table. Instead, you describe subpartitions only once in a template, then apply that subpartition template to every partition in the table. For interval-* composite partitioned tables, the subpartition template is the only way to define subpartitions for interval partitions. The subpartition template is used whenever a subpartition descriptor is not specified for a partition. If a subpartition descriptor is specified, then it is used instead of the subpartition template for that partition. If no subpartition template is specified, and no subpartition descriptor is supplied for a partition, then a single default subpartition is created. Specifying a Subpartition Template for a *-Hash Partitioned Table In the case of [range | interval | list]-hash partitioned tables, the subpartition template can describe the subpartitions in detail, or it can specify just the number of hash subpartitions. Speeding-up large-scale storage with NVM (Non-Volatile Memory). CERN EOS distributed, scalable, fault-tolerant filesystem serves data to 100s-1000s of clients. To speed-up the service, it keeps and updates a large and fast data Catalog in RAM that can reach a footprint of 100+ GBs. When a EOS server node crashes the Master node must rebuild a new coherent Catalog in memory from disk logs, a long operation that disrupts the activity of the clients. We propose to design a persistent, version of the EOS Catalog to be stored in the new Non-Volatile Memory that will remain consistent after faults. Upon restart, the EOS server process will find the Catalog in NVM and immediately resume serving all the clients, skipping the slow reconstructions from disk-based logs altogether. For over a year, I have been updating legacy 4GL/Windows applications to Linux and C++. A primary hang-up of the old system is its lack of scalability. In order to design the replacements with more breadth we implemented 0MQ (zeromq.org) for our communications protocol. When the messages you send are in XML you can easily save another 30% in message size just by switching to JSON (nlohmann/json). The JSON works well with 0MQ as its primary message input is char*. Here using scaled down version of our production code, we will demonstrate how we use it and what we learned so far. Improving TruffleRuby’s Startup Time with the SubstrateVM by Kevin Menard Ruby applications can be broadly split into two categories: those that run for a short period and those that stick around for a while. Optimizing performance for one often comes at the expense of the other. Over the years, alternative Ruby implementations have demonstrated remarkable performance gains for long-lived applications -- so-called peak performance -- but often lose out to MRI for short-lived applications. In this talk, I'll introduce the SubstrateVM and show how we use it to massively improve TruffleRuby's startup time with minimal impact on peak performance.

MapReduce is a programming model and an associated implementation for processing and generating large data sets with a parallel, distributed algorithm on a cluster. A MapReduce program is composed of a Map() procedure that performs filtering and sorting (such as sorting students by first name into queues, one queue for each name) and a Reduce() procedure that performs a summary operation (such as counting the number of students in each queue, yielding name frequencies). The "MapReduce System" (also called "infrastructure" or "framework") orchestrates the processing by marshalling the distributed servers, running the various tasks in parallel, managing all communications and data transfers between the various parts of the system, and providing for redundancy and fault tolerance.
