So here it is, my biggest challenge in my sailing career! Sailing solo across the North Sea from Haugesund, Norway- to Lerwick on Shetland the 26th of January. This made me and Sigurd the first ones ever to have crossed the North Sea solo to join the Up Helly Aa- festival on these beautiful islands... Some say crazy, I say crazy not to give it a try. This is how we develop and grow. Staying safe all the time wont get you anywhere. The video was hard to make. Its all about having the effort to pick up the camera when you really dont want to, and most important, trying to make a story out of it.. Seasick, cold and wet every minute. I loved it. Its all about making a plan and follow it. Theres only plan A. You dont think about plan B before you are forced to! Stay on your course and hold it steady! Youve might heard the words often attributed to Mr. Winston Churchill: "If your going through hell, keep walking" ;) Best regards Erik Music: Paddys Green Shamrock Shore/ Peat in the Creel Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3146656&ty=h Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erik-aanderaa-552953a4?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile

Hi everyone! The 26th of January at 10 o'clock I set sail again to cross the furosious North Sea for Shetland to experience the Up Helly Aa vikingfestival. Strong winds up to 40 knots, heavy snow and a very long periode of complete dark rushed my little boat through huge waves all the way to landfall Shetland in 32 hours. It was an amazing experience to be in the middle of this and feel the real wrath of Mother Nature breathing heavely down my neck, making it very clear whos the boss out in these waters. And its not me. I hope you enjoy this as I hope you get the feeling of what its like to be in a small boat, listen to the threatening sounds of the wind and waves as the snow wips your face until you just get ice cold. All the best, and stay safe. Erik Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3146656&ty=h

Hi Everyone! Finally the circle is closed! Ive crossed the North Sea wintertime alone to see the Up Helly Aa festival! And now Ive got my boat back from Shetland to Haugesund, Norway. And here is the evidence. All though it wasnt to much wind Ive tried my best to capture the life onboard my sailboat during an ocean crossing alone. Ive used all my editing skills to try making it as interresting as possible, still a rookie tho, so much to learn...! And a big THANK YOU to https://sailwear.no/ for providing me with the supercool Gill OS23 full sailgear clothing! It will be used on all my future trips! Amazing!! Where the Baltic and North Seas meet all about this channel in here https://goo.gl/D1zMrA In the resort town of Skagen you can watch an amazing natural phenomenon. This city is the northernmost point of Denmark, where the Baltic and North Seas meet. The two opposing tides in this place can not merge because they have different densities. The province of Skagen located in Denmark has witnessed the beauty of the convergence of the two seas. It is characterized by a clear line which separates the two water and shows a magnificent display of natural beauty. Also mentioned in holy Koran, this sea meet is due to the difference in density of both sea waters which appear as adividing line on the ocean. There is a clear difference in the color of the waters coming from two different seas. At the headland at Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet. Because of their different densities, a clear dividing line can be seen. As a result of turbulent seas, beachings and shipwrecks were common. These frequent losses combined with the town's strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmark's earliest lighthouses.

Summer Holiday's: Sailing our Hunter Europa 19 from Shetland to Norway for a short cruise, and back to Shetland over 2 weeks. Lucked out with the weather with lots of sunshine and great sailing conditions. A wee bit of fog to keep us on our toes during both legs of the crossing. The homemade horizontal axis windvane self-steering worked a treat, the key seems to be the adjustment and securing of the tiller with slight lee helm or weather helm depending on the point of sail, while the trim tab on it's own steers the boat, just as on David Blagdons H19 'Very Willing Griffin'. Thanks to You Tube, some songs have been removed to stop the video being blocked in 244 countries, now it is only blocked in Germany! Cheers

I took on the challenge of crossing the North Sea by sea kayak a second time. I started my attempt on 01/08/2018 at 01:00 hours (local time) at Nieuwpoort harbor, Belgium. I paddled during the spring tide period, with strong tidal streams. I spend exactly 17hours and 48 minutes on the North Sea to reach Ramsgate harbor. I achieved my second record solo and unsupported. There will be a more detailed report of the crossing to be found on the P&H website (team paddlers blog) for those who are interested. The specifications: Sea kayak: P&H Cetus Mv (customized Kevlar-carbon expedition version) Paddles: VE Explorer (medium blades + spare paddle) Full safety gear including VHF radio, PLB, pyrotechnical flare, ODEO flare, cell phone, first aid kit, repair kit, paddle-float, pump…………... I wish to thank my family from all my heart for their continuously and unconditional support on all that I do or undertake! Were it not for them, I would not have done this. Thank you, thank you! Special thanks to the people from Ostend Radio (MRCC Oostende-Belgian Coast Guard) and Dover Coast Guard (UK) for virtually watching over me during the crossing, again! Paddle safe and take care of each other on the water! Dimitri Vandepoele

Crossing the North Sea between Marstrand (Sweden) and Orkney (Scotland): Check! Ryan and I had no offshore sailing experience. Now, I do! Last week, I crossed the North Sea with Andy and Mia from 59 North Sailing on Isbjörn... and without Ryan :) Andy and Mia offer crew space on their boat, Isbjörn, a beautiful Swan 48. A couple of months ago, they happened to have an open bunk between Marstrand and Orkney, and I took the opportunity to get some offshore sailing experience before our own adventure. Btw, check them out!!!: https://www.59-north.com/ We all met in Marstrand, on the West Coast of Sweden. On the first day, I woke up way too early, and had to sneak out to the galley to get myself a snack while everyone onboard was asleep. I was even too early for the shower! We then set sail in waves that made Ben really seasick. I made a little fun of Ben while he was passed out in the cockpit, and paid the price. Just a moment later, I was myself agonizing all the way to Denmark, where we ended up that day. We waited out some weather, hit the reset button and set sails to Orkney on day 3. I used some seasickness patches and made sure I was well prepared for all conditions. Fortunately, the rest of the passage went much easier, but the 3 first days were exhausting. We spent them alternating between being on watch and sleeping, and I got to see some of the prettiest sunrises and sunsets of my life. I took my first night-watch ever, from 00.00AM to 4AM. We rocked 8 knots all the way in the dark. I was a bit scared at first, but being so prepared, geared up and in good company made me relaxed and enjoy the experience. After 3 days at sea, we took a dip in a 9 degrees cold North Sea. Bucket list check! That same day, we saw dolphins. The winds shifted to the aft of the boat on the next day, and I walked up the bow to go rig a boom preventer in the waves. I got back to the cockpit a little wet :) At 2.30 AM that night, I got woken up by the sound of the engine, and we landfall in Orkney at 4AM. From BFI database: Records the process of the discovery of oil in the Beryl Field in the North Sea through to its eventual production. Uses animated sequences to explain the geology of the area and how oil was formed there, before illustrating the building and positioning of the "Beryl" platform -- a two-storey platform supported by three concrete towers. The film comments on the importance of oil production, especially the Beryl 'A' Platform, in regard to Britain's independence and economic status in 1977. Produced by Michael Forlong Productions for Mobil. This is a new digital transfer from a vintage 16mm library print.

The North Sea Crossing: I have dreamed. I have prepared. I have trained hard. I have crossed the Southern part of the North Sea by sea kayak on 30 and 31 July 2015. Manpowered and alone, no support whatsoever and no support or pilot vessel. I have paddled during day and night time. I’ve been exhausted, excited and happy at the same time. This is my story. I had this dream to do the North Sea crossing for years and now the weather conditions were perfect. So I planned, made calculations to counter the tide and prepared myself mentally. On Thursday 30 July I’ve said my goodbyes to my family. Right before starting I sended a message to both the Belgian and the British Coast Guard to inform them of my plans and estimated route. At 21:30 hours sharp I sat in my sea kayak and paddled to open sea. I waved a last time when passing the pier to my family. I had luck, after sunset I had still some light because it was full moon. The downside was the current, full moon means spring tide! Just till the Trapegeer buoy I had the tidal stream in my favor. After that point, and that was fully calculated in advance, I had to paddle 6 hours against a strong tide. At 04:48 hours I arrived at the DY1 buoy. It was slack at that point, tidal current should change direction soon. I had radio contact one last time with Marc, the friendly radio operator from the Belgian Coast Guard (Ostend Radio) to give him my current position and state. He was in close contact with Sylvie (my wife and support team) to keep her informed. After that point I was on my own until I was in reach with the British Coast Guard. I paddled on, with the current in my favor this time, to the buoys Ruytingen SW and Ruytingen NW. In the meantime the sun was rising what made the crossing of the international fairway a bit easier. According to the Coast Guard almost 500 sea ships are passing through that lane every single day. I had to keep watch in order to stay as far away from those big ship as possible. Doubt that they would even spot me! So I this section I paddled as hard as I could having a strong tidal current on the right side. I managed to get over the shipping lane, along the buoys Sandettie WSW to the South Falls without troubles. I only spotted 4 big sea ships but I’ve passed them at a longer distance. After that I changed my course and diverged from my planned route to a secondary planned route. Did that in order to counter the very strong tidal current that was pushing very hard on my right side. So I went to the E Goodwin light ship. At the light ship I established radio contact, this time with the Dover Coast Guard. They we’re already fully aware of my intentions and also keeping my wife informed of my position and state. I was treated very friendly by the crew on the radio (as was my wife). The E Goodwin ship is an unmanned lightship that brings seaman the very treacherous Goodwin sand banks to their attention. Dangerous for almost every other vessel but ideal conditions for a seasoned kayaker. With almost no wind at all there were wave between 0,5 and 1 meter height! In that area I’ve seen numerous seals. Wonderful!! The sand banks we’re the last piece of the crossing. After that I’ve sat sail to Ramsgate harbor. The tidal current was now pushing on my left side so I had to compensate a lot in order to reach the harbor. I reached the slipway in the harbor of Ramsgate at 15:06 hours (Belgian time). I was so far ahead on my estimated planning that my support team had not arrived yet. Luckily I was prepared for that, I had dry clothes and plenty of food and drinks with me. After a few hours my lovely wife and kids arrived, it was a happy reunion!! We took the ferry back to the mainland. I wish to thank my wife Sylvie for her constant support in the chasing of my biggest dream, the North Sea crossing as well in all my other so called foolish plans regarding sea kayaking! I want to say thanks to Marc, the radio operator from the Belgian Coast Guard – Ostend Radio for looking an eye out for me just until the DY1 buoy! The same count for the friendly crew from the Dover Coast Guard! To those people; your help is very much appreciated both by me as by my wife! We hope with this crossing to put Belgian sea kayaking on the map! A big thanks to my other Northseakayak-members for their continuous support! Technical data: The full crossing was correctly registered by GPS. • Total distance: 106,7 km • Total time: 17uur36min • Average speed: 6,1 km/h • Maximum registered speed: 13,5 km/h • Used sea kayak: P&H Custom Sea Kayaks – Scorpio Lv (polyethylene) • Used paddle: Vertical Elements Explorer Aircore Pro full carbon • Full safety gear including two VHF radio, a Personal Locator Beacon, flares,…..

This is the second performance of James Brown and his band, that he did during the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague. This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience. Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier. The concert's encore is a raving rendition of 'Sex Machine'. Enjoy! The repertoire featured is: 00:03:30 "Hot Pants Road' by Charles Bobbit, James Brown, St. Clair Pinckney ; 00:09:02 "We are the funky men" - James Brown; 00:19:43 "Also sprach Zarathustra - Richard Straus s" + "Somewhere over the rainbow" – E.Y. Harburg,H. Arlen + 'Star Wars Main Theme' - John Williams; 00:27:14 "Hit man" - (?); 00:30:49 "Too funky in here" - B. Shapiro, G. Jackson, R. Miller, W. Shaw; 00:35:19 "Doing It to Death (Gonna Have a Funky Good Time)" - James Brown; 00:38:04 "Try me" - James Brown; 00:42:23 "Get on the good food" - James Brown; Fred Wesley; Joe Mims; 00:46:01 "I'm just a prisoner" - Eddie Harris; George Jackson 00:49:51 "Cold sweat" - Brown/Ellis; 00:52:31 "Papa's got a brand new bag" - James Brown; 00:53:34 "I feel good" - James Brown; 00:56:35 "It's a man's world" -James Brown; 01:10:37 "Jam" - James Brown; 01:14:18 "Sex machine" - James Brown; Bobby Byrd; Ronald R. B.B.King was a regular guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. This outstanding almost 2 hour long concert with his Blues Band was recorded live on 10th July 1987. Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015), known professionally as B.B. King, was an American blues singer, electric guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists like Eric Clapton and Keith Richards. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues". This recording was made by AVRO Television in the Congresgebouw, the Hague, The Netherlands on 10 July 1987. It features Leon Warren on guitar.
