Although not always thought of as a skin healthy vegetable, seaweed offers an incredible array of health benefits for our bodies and skin. It offers a massive amount of health promoting nutrients and compounds, especially when compared to other plant and animal-based foods. Seaweed is a rich source of minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, iron and selenium. It is also loaded with an abundance of antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber and vitamins such as vitamin C, E and K. It even has omega-3 fatty acids and important amino acids. This nutritional profile is important to keep in mind when we think of the ways that seaweed can be beneficial for our skin, as many of these compounds help to maintain healthy skin. Lets get more in depth about the skin health benefits of seaweed, specifically when it is used as a skin wrap.
Seaweed wraps are nothing new, as they have been used by individuals for ages due to their therapeutic and skin health effects. When these seaweed wraps are applied to the skin, they detoxify and cleanse the skin by expelling unwanted toxins from the pores. This helps the skin to look more young and radiant looking. As well, as mentioned before, the wealth of essential vitamins, mineral, amino acids and antioxidants found in seaweed helps to keep the skin revitalized, moisturized and looking youthful when applied. The wraps help the skin guard against harmful effects of environmental pollutants while also slowing down the skin’s aging process. You may have noticed that seaweed extracts are found in some skin care cosmetics. This is due to the anti-aging properties associated with seaweed.
When seaweed wraps are applied, it also allows for the anti-inflammatory properties and phytonutrients to go to work, promoting the overall health of the skin. The anti-inflammatory properties can be helpful in treating different skin ailments, such as skin rashes, skin irritation and wounds. The phytonutrients bring back and increase the healthy glow of the face since they elevate blood flow. In addition to these benefits, seaweed wraps also provide anti-microbial properties, which helps to keep the skin clean and pure.

You can make these wraps at home using seaweed strands. First, soak a 2-ounce package of dried seaweed in warm water for about 10 minutes. Next, wrap the wet strands around your body while they are still warm. You will want to do this while sitting or standing in the shower or bathtub, as they will most likely drip. Keep the seaweed on the desired parts of your body for 30 minutes, then peel it off and rinse your skin with cool water.
