Should I Learn Oracle or SQL Server?

02:17
Should I learn Oracle or SQL Server? While Oracle DBA certification pays well, the classes and getting a practice version of Oracle is expensive. I heard you could get versions of SQL Server for free. Part of it depends on the software developers you're working with. Use SQL Server if you're working with Microsoft's .Net, whereas Java developers are more likely to use Oracle. I didn't know that SQL Server was a Microsoft brand. So if you'll be working on MS servers and MS databases, you need to learn the SQL server. Which one is better for my career? There are typically more MS SQL jobs, but the Oracle jobs pay more. Oracle doesn't have as many jobs, but you have less competition. Those who didn't join the Microsoft cult pay a price for it. Which one is harder to learn? Oracle is rather complex, whereas MS SQL Server is simpler because it has a good graphical user interface. It's nice to hear that Microsoft made at least one good user interface. They usually put out crap, but once in a while, there's a good one. I've heard MySQL is more popular. Only because of the so called popularity of Microsoft. Oracle is the heavyweight database tool. Which relational database is better? MySQL works with almost any web-based application. Oracle is more stable, secure and scalable for enterprise wide applications. I'm glad to know that the big data that is running the world isn't all beholden to Bill Gates. No, but most PCs that generate the data still are. It sounds like I need to learn Oracle. Fortunately, you can learn Oracle inside and out and a little MS SQL and do almost any database admin job you'd like. You're guaranteed to get dates if you can proudly announce you have stable, well paying employment. It's like saying you're a musician, artist and athlete at once. Girls will just be happy if she doesn't have to pay for the date these days.

Part 2 SQL query to get organization hierarchy

These are already discussed in SQL Server Tutorial. 1. Self-Join - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnYSN_7qwgg 2. CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXB5b-7HJHk 3. Recursive CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGoV0wTMCg0 Here is the problem definition: 1. Employees table contains the following columns a) EmployeeId, b) EmployeeName c) ManagerId 2. If an EmployeeId is passed, the query should list down the entire organization hierarchy i.e who is the manager of the EmployeeId passed and who is managers manager and so on till full hierarchy is listed. For example, Scenario 1: If we pass David's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from David. Scenario 2: If we pass Lara's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from Lara. We will be Employees table for this demo. SQL to create and populate Employees table with test data Create table Employees ( EmployeeID int primary key identity, EmployeeName nvarchar(50), ManagerID int foreign key references Employees(EmployeeID) ) GO Insert into Employees values ('John', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Tom', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Lara', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Simon', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('David', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Stacy', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Sam', NULL) GO Update Employees Set ManagerID = 8 Where EmployeeName IN ('Mark', 'Steve', 'Lara') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 2 Where EmployeeName IN ('Stacy', 'Simon') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 3 Where EmployeeName IN ('Tom') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 5 Where EmployeeName IN ('John', 'Sam') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 4 Where EmployeeName IN ('David') GO Here is the SQL that does the job Declare @ID int ; Set @ID = 7; WITH EmployeeCTE AS ( Select EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerID From Employees Where EmployeeId = @ID UNION ALL Select Employees.EmployeeId , Employees.EmployeeName, Employees.ManagerID From Employees JOIN EmployeeCTE ON Employees.EmployeeId = EmployeeCTE.ManagerID ) Select E1.EmployeeName, ISNULL(E2.EmployeeName, 'No Boss') as ManagerName From EmployeeCTE E1 LEFT Join EmployeeCTE E2 ON E1.ManagerID = E2.EmployeeId

Window functions in SQL Server

11:00
sql server window function example window function sql server example sql server rows range clause sql server rows between 1 preceding and 1 following In this video we will discuss window functions in SQL Server In SQL Server we have different categories of window functions Aggregate functions - AVG, SUM, COUNT, MIN, MAX etc.. Ranking functions - RANK, DENSE_RANK, ROW_NUMBER etc.. Analytic functions - LEAD, LAG, FIRST_VALUE, LAST_VALUE etc... OVER Clause defines the partitioning and ordering of a rows (i.e a window) for the above functions to operate on. Hence these functions are called window functions. The OVER clause accepts the following three arguments to define a window for these functions to operate on. ORDER BY : Defines the logical order of the rows PARTITION BY : Divides the query result set into partitions. The window function is applied to each partition separately. ROWSor RANGE clause : Further limits the rows within the partition by specifying start and end points within the partition. The default for ROWS or RANGE clause is RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW Let us understand the use of ROWS or RANGE clause with an example. Compute average salary and display it against every employee We might think the following query would do the job. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, AVG(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS Average FROM Employees As you can see from the result, the above query does not produce the overall salary average. It produces the average of the current row and the rows preceeding the current row. This is because, the default value of ROWS or RANGE clause (RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) is applied. To fix this, provide an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause as shown below. ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING tells the window function to operate on the set of rows starting from the first row in the partition to the last row in the partition. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, AVG(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING) AS Average FROM Employees The same result can also be achieved by using RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING Well, what is the difference between ROWS and RANGE We will discuss this in a later video The following query can be used if you want to compute the average salary of 1. The current row 2. One row PRECEDING the current row and 3. One row FOLLOWING the current row SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, AVG(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN 1 PRECEDING AND 1 FOLLOWING) AS Average FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/window-functions-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/window-functions-in-sql-server_7.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

How to Setup Amazon Web Services EC2 Instance with Apache, PHP, MySQL

25:47
How to Setup Amazon Web Services EC2 Instance with Apache, PHP, MySQL Instructions: Go to http://aws.amazon.com/ and create a new account if you do not have an account already. A credit card or debit is required. Sign into your AWS account under console management. Select EC2 and create a new instance. Choose one of the Ubuntu AMIs, and leave everything default. Under Security groups, create a new security group with SSH and HTTP. Name your key and download. Under the terminal, maneuver to the key and chmod 400 to make sure that the permissions are correct. Under windows, you may have to run as administrator the command prompt or cygwin to chmod properly. Or you can use the command that I did, which was: chown :Users testTutorial.pem Then I did: chmod 400 testTutorial.pem Allows only me to read Then: ssh -i testTutorial.pem [email protected](public IP) Once you are on the Ubuntu AMI, you can start to mess around with the packages to install. I recommend the following: Run the command: sudo apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-php5 php5 mysql-server php5-mysql You can also get phpadmin if you would like. Remember to restart the apache service: service apache2 restart Then, run a secure installation of mysql: mysql_secure_installation Go put in your browser the public IP. It works! But what if you want to change the index.html Well, go cd ../../var/www In this directory www, you can edit the index.html sudo vim index.html You can change the index.html to anything you want using the editor of your choice. The site changes. Best Way to Write Basic SQL Queries

13:33
SQL Server Query writing strategies is something I have yet to find in any book. When enthusiastic SQL students do this, they experience a revelation. The number of errors drops significantly and the speed at writing complex queries increases immediately. Knowing how to narrow down what we are looking for amongst a vast list of choices helps immensely. Grabbing the right tables first and then the fields second is akin to grabbing the right menu before ordering an item from it. In fact, one student named Tim took this back to his team of SQL developers and they immediately implemented this process. We are all used to following steps. Most of the time, actions are sequential from top to bottom or left to right. Other times we complete things in phases. The two phases we are going to use in this exercise apply to joining tables. This is easy to implement as we only need remember to organize first and clean up second. When visiting a new restaurant, we will ask to see the menu, because we want to see all they have to offer. The odds are that we might be interested in half of the items, but only need a few dishes for our group at the table. Looking at the menu is like starting a query with a ‘SELECT *’ statement. Once we have looked at all the fields, we narrow our choice(s) to only the items we want at the time. Sometimes restaurants have multiple menus. My favorite restaurant has a kids’ menu, an adult menu, a gluten-free menu and a drink menu. These menus were each gathered at our table. Ultimately, in my head, a selection was narrowed to what was needed. Phase I: Organize. When building a new query from many tables, we often find ourselves wondering, “Where do I start?” First, lay the steps out by identifying which tables contain the essential data. Second, get all the table joins working with a basic ‘SELECT *’ statement. Third, add any basic filtering criteria. Phase II: Itemize. Once all joins and criteria, such as SELECT, FROM and WHERE are working, we are ready for Phase II. This entails going back and changing our ‘SELECT *’ to an itemized SELECT field list as the final step. Let’s explore how this two-phase process of Organize and then Itemize can be a big time-saver. We are going to use one of the challenges from the last lab. In Lab 3.2 (Outer Joins), Skill Check 2, we needed to get four fields from two different tables. If we were to list all four desired fields and test one table at time, we will get an error as seen on the right side of the figure below. In the figure below we write a SELECT statement and part of the FROM clause. When completed, the FROM clause will have two tables, but for now we just want to get the Location table working. By using the ‘SELECT *’ strategy, we remove any possible errors from line 1. From there, we can focus on the more complicated logic used for joining tables together. We can add tables one at a time until everything is working. This is the Organize phase. NOTE: SELECT * never results in an Error message stating “invalid column name”, however; a SELECT list with itemized field(s) can have this error. After our query is organized and working, we can go back and itemize the SELECT field list to display only the fields that are necessary. This is done during Phase II (Itemize). The steps for this system are broken down as follows: Since SELECT is always the first statement in a query, it’s natural to want to write the field names before writing the FROM clause. However; we can save time and trouble by using the ‘*’ until the entire query is working properly. When this is complete, it is very easy to itemize the field list, with the confidence of knowing it will not cause any problems. Exercise: Simple membership for a club: Table1 (id_Member,name_Member, email_member, title, age, company) Table2 (id_Club,club_name, club_Location, address) Table3 (id_club, id_member,membership_date) Q1: Show all member names, email, age, and company from Table1 Q2: Show all club name, location, and address data Q3: Show member name, club name, club location (hint: Use joins and all 3 tables) You can find all other classes related to this video here: http://www.joes2pros.com/joes2pros/Course/Introduction_To_Microsoft_SQL_Server Enroll Today & Get the First Month for only $1! We have recently seen some convergence of different database technologies. Many customers are evaluating heterogeneous migrations as their database needs have evolved or changed. Evaluating the best database to use for a job isn’t as clear as it was ten years ago. In this session, we discuss the ideal use cases for relational and nonrelational data services, including Amazon ElastiCache for Redis, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Aurora, and Amazon Redshift. This session digs into how to evaluate a new workload for the best managed database option.

Oracle Flashback Technology is a group of Oracle Database features that let you view past states of database objects or to return database objects to a previous state without using point-in-time media recovery. Oracle Flashback Version Query Use this feature to retrieve metadata and historical data for a specific time interval (for example, to view all the rows of a table that ever existed during a given time interval). Metadata for each row version includes start and end time, type of change operation, and identity of the transaction that created the row version. To create an Oracle Flashback Version Query, use the VERSIONS BETWEEN clause of the SELECT statement. Oracle Flashback Table Use this feature to restore a table to its state at a previous point in time. You can restore a table while the database is on line, undoing changes to only the specified table.

Keynote Coverage | Oracle OpenWorld 2013

01:06:38
In his keynote speech marking the opening of the annual Oracle OpenWorld event, company chief Larry Ellision laid out his plans to dominate the burgeoning in-memory computing sector with a new option for its flagship 12c database software, together with a clutch of new products designed to speed up data flows across the web and corporate data centers. Simply called the "In-memory option", Oracle's latest upgrade to its database product delivers "ungodly" improvements to performance, claimed Ellison during his keynote. The In-memory option is designed to target both transactional and analytical workloads, and is being introduced alongside two new hardware products and a brand new cloud service. The new products are part of Oracle's plan to do the "same thing to the data center that Apple did to consumers," something that he announced last year when defending the company's 2010 acquisition of Sun Microsystems. At the time, Ellison brushed off concerns about the steady decline in Oracle's hardware sales, saying that this was all part of the plan -- rather than focus on low-margin hardware, the idea is to create "purpose-built machines," or appliances, to run Oracle's database software, just as Apple's software only runs on its own smartphones and tablets. Oracle's 12c Database In-memory Option It's no secret that Oracle was planning to make an in-memory announcement at OpenWorld, but until yesterday we were quite sketchy on the details. According to Ellision, the new upgrade will give Oracle 12c database users a speed boost of around "100 times faster" at the flip of a switch: "When you put data in memory, one of the reasons you do that is to make it go faster," Ellison said Sunday. "Oracle had a goal of 100 times faster queries for analytics and a doubling in throughput for transaction processing with the in-memory option." Analytics will be much faster when the system users a column-based store, while transactions run more efficiently while in a row-store database, Ellison said. With the in-memory upgrade, Oracle Database 12c now stores data in both formats simultaneously, while the information is kept consistent: "When you update one you always update the other. The data is consistent between those two formats. There's actually very little overhead in maintaining the column store in-memory in addition to Oracle's traditional row store. Just as important is the ease in which users will be able to switch on the in-memory option: "You say how much memory you want to use in the computer, tell me what partitions or tables to be in memory, and drop your analytic indexes. Queries run 100 times faster and updates, inserts run two, three times faster," Ellison added. "Flip a switch and all of your applications run much, much faster. Every application you wrote, every application you bought, runs without a single change." Oracle's 12c database was unveiled at its OpenWorld conference last year, primarly designed as a cloud computing tool, with customers including Salesforce.com, Wikipedia and Yahoo. It's also been designed for large enterprises that wish to build "private clouds," essentially a cloud located within the company's own servers. While the 12c database has proven popular, Oracle's main challenge is the threat it faces from rival firm SAP. As I pointed out in last week's preview, the problem is that many companies running Oracle's database do so together with SAP software -- something that's given SAP the opportunity to try and yank customers away from Oracle and instead sell them on its own HANA in-memory database. The in-memory option is Oracle's long-awaited answer to this, aimed at convincing its customers not to ditch its database. Hardware & Cloud Add-Ons Besides the in-memory option, Ellision introduced a couple of fancy hardware products to support it, as well as a new cloud-based backup and recovery service that should strengthen its overall database offering. First up was its new M6-32 Big Memory Machine, a chunky new server designed especially to run the 12c database. It comes with a massive 32 terabytes of memory, giving enterprises the option of storing all of, or just a part of their database inside it. Ellision says that the advantage of doing so is great -- it'll make the database much faster as the server won't be slowed down by "input/output" (I/O), nor will it need to grab data from separate storage drives attached to the main server. Oracle's second hardware offering is its "Oracle Database Backup Logging Recovery Appliance," which is simply a backup to the main database. Should any disasters strike, users will be able to restore all of their data using this appliance. Keynote Coverage, Oracle OpenWorld 2013 with John Furrier and Dave Vellante @thecube #oow13
