Break the stereotype against women | Aashna Jalan | TEDxYouth@OIS
Through her inspiring talk, Aashna tries to throw light on the fact that one does not have to judge a person's ability, aspirations and desires by gender. She highlights the stereotypes that exist in the society against women. Aashna Jalan is a Chemical Engineering Undergrad in the Institute of Chemical Technology. She believes in the embracing her inner nerd but does not let that restrict her from exploring new avenues. She is also passionate about the performing and fine arts. However, her staunch feminism stems from classes which almost always had more boys than girls and career conversations which constantly revolved marriage. She would like to share her experiences as a teenager growing up in a gender-stereotyped society working her way through a male-dominated field. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Gender stereotyping in India becoming a threat to women's safety?

Reliable receptionist required - gender stereotypes
email [email protected] for corporate enquiries or take this course now on www.skillboosters.com Bias at the recruitment stage • Job advertisements that use gendered language can often put men and women off applying for particular jobs, and job specifications that contain gendered language can prejudice recruiters in favour of men and women before they even reach the interview stage. • It’s also often the case that the gender of the people already doing a particular job in an organisation will tend to prejudice recruiters in favour of recruiting people of the same the same gender - and the bar will be higher for the members of the opposite gender who apply. • Allowing first impressions about things like dress, makeup or accent to influence our opinions about a candidate can mean that we fail to be objective in our assessment of their abilities. • Women ‘talking up’ their achievements at interview may be seen as ‘pushy’ or ‘arrogant’ and as a result may downplay their abilities and achievements.

Competent Men and Warm Women: Gender Stereotypes and Backlash in Image Search Results
Competent Men and Warm Women: Gender Stereotypes and Backlash in Image Search Results Jahna Otterbacher, Jo Bates, Paul Clough CHI '17: ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems Session: Appropriation and Individuation Abstract There is much concern about algorithms that underlie information services and the view of the world they present. We develop a novel method for examining the content and strength of gender stereotypes in image search, inspired by the trait adjective checklist method. We compare the gender distribution in photos retrieved by Bing for the query "person" and for queries based on 68 character traits (e.g., "intelligent person") in four regional markets. Photos of men are more often retrieved for "person," as compared to women. As predicted, photos of women are more often retrieved for warm traits (e.g., "emotional") whereas agentic traits (e.g., "rational") are represented by photos of men. A backlash effect, where stereotype-incongruent individuals are penalized, is observed. However, backlash is more prevalent for "competent women" than "warm men." Results underline the need to understand how and why biases enter search algorithms and at which stages of the engineering process. Introduction to Social Psychology We often have firmly held beliefs about why people think and behave the way they do. Sometimes our intuitions are correct, but often they are not. Social psychology helps us understand how people think about themselves and other people and what motivates their behaviour in social settings. This course explores a range of topics in social psychology, from how we think about ourselves, how we think about others, and how we interact and communicate with others. We will also discuss the ways that we can influence others and be influenced by others. Finally, we look at some problematic aspects of human behaviour, such as prejudice and aggression. You should take this course if you are curious about why we behave the way we do. Male firefighter stereotypes 'putting women off signing up' | ITV News
Media stereotypes of male firefighters as musclebound sex objects are putting women off joining the service, the London Fire Brigade has said. A quarter of women think men are better equipped to be firefighters, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by the mayor of London. Just 7% of women thought the same of police officers when asked: “Do you think men are more able to do the job, women are more able to do the job, or they are both equally able?” Concerns about gender stereotyping have led the LFB to back proposals by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban sexist adverts. WATCH IN HD Hey everyone! In this video, Benedicte, Naivasha and I discuss challenging the common stereotypes Congolese women are portrayed as. We even came across a tweet on twitter where a Congolese individual felt embarrassed to say they were from Congo due to the way the country is mocked on social media. We then go on to discuss another issue raised where an individual wrote a post about Congolese women being messed, and our response to that. To finalise, we talk about the Congolese women dating men from other countries and also the importance of uplifting Congolese men instead of tearing them down. We hope you enjoy! Stereotype Threat and Professional Women’s Engagement with Zoe Kinias
How does women's concern about confirming gender stereotypes (i.e., stereotype threat) predict their engagement in professional leadership contexts? In this seminar, Zoe Kinias shares findings from five studies with global businesswomen. Her findings show how stereotype threat predicts psychological disengagement, how an intervention can buffer against deleterious effects of stereotype threat, and stereotype threat's silver lining--that it motivates attitudes and actions in support of gender balance. Zoe Kinias, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, INSEAD; Academic Director, Gender Initiative, INSEAD

The dark secret behind sexist advertisements. | Natalia Ortiz Hazarian | TEDxYSMU
Women don't feel represented by advertisements – even though they are the main responsible for buying decisions around the world. Natália Hazarian investigates why that happens by specifying how ads are connected with sexism and gender inequality, and showing why we shouldn't tolerate that. With educational background in Public Relations, Natália brings her expertise in communication and branding to the fields of sustainable development and human rights. She helps brands build strong attitudes in social causes while exploring how citizens are shaping new expectations and patterns of consumption. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, her international work experience includes the United Nations, Edelman – the world’s biggest PR company –, and multinationals like Unilever and Infosys. Natalia has also coordinated emergency housing projects to 91 families in 5 underprivileged communities in Sao Paulo through Techo, a Latin-American NGO that fights extreme poverty by implementing social inclusion programs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Women computer science majors breakdown tech stereotypes
Traditionally and still to today, the majority of college computer science majors are male. One of the biggest reasons often cited is the stereotype that females just don't like coding or they aren't good at it. But one college in California is shattering those stereotypes. CGTN’s May Lee reports.
