H&D in BK for Afropunk 2014
Hilary and Denise is an online store and lifestyle website dedicated to showcasing the very essence of how diasporic cultures wear themselves in their aesthetic and sounds.
The weekend of August 23rd 2014, the Wild Womyn of H&D were summoned- by the universe- to participate in a pilgrimage to Brooklyn, NY for Afropunk's annual music festival. Our Schedules only allowed us to be in NY for 36 hours-because we on that 9-5 & 5-9 grind tho still- but we couldn't miss this. Not again.
Brooklyn welcomed us with open arms, morning pleasantries, familial vibes and plenty ah soca chunes!. It felt like home.
In attempts to find our destination sans map, we found ourselves a little lost in the labyrinth of Brooklyn's belly. But the magical thing about BK is that you're never really left stranded. We crossed paths with a group of beautiful wild womyn, whom were more than happy to lead us to the rest of the tribe.
The moment we walked through the gates we stopped in awe. Our hearts filled up with a newfound sense of joy and bliss. We were like kids in Afro Disneyland - overwhelmed, beyond excited and confused as to where to start or what to do exactly. Salty tears began to gather in our eyes. No joke...shit got real.
We found ourselves surrounded by the outcasts, misfits, game-changers, revolutionaries, artists, artisans, risk-takers and afro-bohemes that we had always dreamed of and wished to meet. No cut-eyes or screwfaces, only warm embraces, appreciation and adoration. Everyone that we met and spoke with became our friends instantaneously. We found our family...our community.
The style/fashion/swag/steez was over the top in the best ways possible. Ripped jeans, African patterns, bold colours and characters, afros/braids/twists/kinks, piercings in all the right places. The adornment and artsy swag on all of those black and brown bodies was breathtaking. We're pretty sure that heaven looks like an Afropunk Fest.
We thank all of the enchanting and supportive beings that we connected with along our journey. We see your light and appreciate you!
