Learn React & Material UI - #11 Styling with JSS

12:21
Hey guys, in this video we'll unpack styling in JSS which, as a reminder, is a popular CSS-in-JS library. Although inline styles in React are superior to external stylesheets in that they don't require a toolchain dependency (e.g. Webpack loaders) and retain a scoped namespace, they come at the cost of decreased performance, as well as advanced CSS features (media queries, pseudo selectors, etc.). CSS-in-JSS addresses the problems inherent in both global CSS and inline styles. JSS, in particular, stands out among others (CSS modules, Aphrodite, Fela, etc.) with its clean & consistent API, low bundle size, SSR support, plugin extensions, and easy debugging. For detailed info I suggest you visit the official site http://cssinjs.org and http://cssinjs.org/react-jss Technically, MUI allows for any third-party styling solution other than JSS, especially if your project is already boxed in an alternative setup; in fact, they describe how you can go about integrating e.g. Styled Components in the Interoperability secion https://material-ui-next.com/guides/interoperability/ However, JSS is already built into MUI, as it forks react-jss internally, so why not give it a try? Chances are, you'll love it! And plus, with CSS-in-JSS, not only do you have full power of CSS, but you also get things like autoprefixing for free. Besides, dynamic styling (at runtime) and nested theming with overwrites will feel like a breeze. We'll take a closer look at themes in the very next episode, but for now, be sure to experiment with withStyles() helper from material-ui. Note that withStyles HOC can also be used as a decorator @ (though it's not supported in create-react-app out of the box, so you'll have to eject or fork https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I22TW-33dDE) Tabs cannot be centered AND scollable simultaneously https://github.com/mui-org/material-ui/issues/10235 A simple workaround is to toggle the props on the fly based on screen width (available with withWidth HOC; more on that in the vid!) For cross-browser CSS normalizations à la normalize.css, look no further than CssBaseline https://material-ui-next.com/style/css-baseline/ See you next time!

Improving Web and Mobile App Typography - 5 basic guidelines

06:49
One of my goals this year is to digest important concepts in design and then try to explain them in a concise, easy-to-follow format. My first attempt is on typography. I studied from the best and I was able to list five essential principles to improve the typographic quality of your web and mobile app products in this video. I hope you like it—your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Here are five essential practical guidelines to improve your typographic quality of your web and mobile product designs. 1. Start by choosing your body text typeface. 2. Try to avoid mixing typefaces. 3. Watch your line length. 4. Balance line height and point size. 5. Use proper Apostrophes and Dashes. I plan to go more into detail in a crash course on typography that I’ll publish here. We’ll talk about the difference between typefaces and fonts, how to choose the right type, where to discover good typography, pairing typefaces, and more conceptual stuff. In the meantime, check out these awesome resources: RESOURCES: To find fonts for the web and mobile apps https://typekit.com/ https://fonts.google.com/ Typewolf, a great source of inspiration and resources https://www.typewolf.com/ Just My Type, learning how to mix typefaces http://www.justmytype.co/ Jessica Hische’s fantastic guide on type for the web http://jessicahische.is/talkingtype Professional web typography by Donny Truong https://prowebtype.com/ Butterick’s Practical Typography http://practicaltypography.com Style Manual by Andy Taylor http://stylemanual.org/ Fonts have feelings too, by Mikael Cho (great read) https://medium.com/who-what-why/fonts-have-feelings-too-1523564d966c#.boqxndw40

Component Based Theming With UI Patterns

55:55
Brian Perry Since the release of Drupal 8, great strides have been made to develop a component based theming workflow that takes advantage of the best that Twig has to offer and also plays nice with living style guides and pattern libraries. Gone are the days of redundant styles and markup, making way for the efficiencies found when Drupal and tools like Pattern Lab and KSS can share the exact same code. That said, handling the mapping of data between Drupal and your component library can still be quite complicated and difficult to coordinate on larger cross-functional teams. The UI Patterns Module offers a number of powerful ways to make Drupal more aware of the components in your pattern library. By exposing these patterns as Drupal plugins, UI Patterns Module makes it possible to manage this data mapping process within the Drupal Admin UI and also easily use these patterns with component friendly modules like Paragraphs, Panels and Field Layout. This session will cover: Basic setup and use of the UI Patterns Module. Integrating UI Patterns into a typical workflow and theme structure using Drupal and Pattern Lab. Using UI Patterns functionality to manage complicated mappings between Drupal and your component library. Overcoming challenges with onboarding new developers who may not be familiar with this approach to theming. Creating a component-friendly content editing experience. This session is for front-end developers who have experimented with a component based theming in Drupal 8 and have been looking to streamline the process. It is also for front-end developers who haven’t yet adopted this emerging component based theming approach and have wondered how it might impact their workflow. And for those who are involved with Drupal 8 projects but are not front-end developers, this session should help you become aware of some of the potential challenges, as well as the advantages to this component based theming approach as it relates to your work. https://nedcamp.org/new-england-drupal-camp/sessions/component-based-theming-ui-patterns

Installing the Sample Application to Create a Living Style Guide

02:59
This video lesson is part of the tutorial "Creating a Living Style Guide". You can view the written tutorial at http://bit.ly/2iWLYmn ------ About the Tutorial The living style guide serves as a framework of definitions for UI elements (such as headings, lists, links, input controls, etc.) and as a library of components (such as navigation systems, toolbars, search tools, grid tables, etc.) that are available for use. This means that development is not started from scratch every time. Instead, it builds upon existing definitions in the UI system and contributes to it. In this course, you’ll learn all about planning your style guide, creating pages and documenting stylesheets using the open source tool: DocumentCSS. Creating Sections in a Living Style Guide

03:32
This video lesson is part of the tutorial "Creating a Living Style Guide". You can view the written tutorial at http://bit.ly/2ip9tAK ------ About the Tutorial The living style guide serves as a framework of definitions for UI elements (such as headings, lists, links, input controls, etc.) and as a library of components (such as navigation systems, toolbars, search tools, grid tables, etc.) that are available for use. This means that development is not started from scratch every time. Instead, it builds upon existing definitions in the UI system and contributes to it. In this course, you’ll learn all about planning your style guide, creating pages and documenting stylesheets using the open source tool: DocumentCSS. Component Based Theming With UI Patterns and Pattern Lab

45:49
By Brian Perry Since the release of Drupal 8, great strides have been made to develop a component based theming workflow that takes advantage of the best that Twig has to offer and also plays nice with living style guides and pattern libraries. Gone are the days of redundant styles and markup, making way for the efficiencies found when Drupal and tools like Pattern Lab can share the exact same code. That said, handling the mapping of data between Drupal and your component library can still be quite complicated and difficult to coordinate on larger cross-functional teams. The UI Patterns Module offers a number of powerful ways to define and manage components in a way that Drupal understands. By exposing these patterns as Drupal plugins, UI Patterns makes it possible to manage this data mapping process within the Drupal Admin UI and also easily use these patterns from your pattern library with component friendly modules like Paragraphs and and Field Layout. This session will cover: * A brief introduction to component based theming concepts * An overview of the common approach to integrating Drupal with pattern library components without the UI Patterns Module. * Basic setup and use of the UI Patterns Module to manage mappings between Drupal and your pattern library. * The various integration sub-modules included with UI Patterns. * Advanced topics like rendering patterns via a Twig function, rendering patterns programmatically, handling sub-patterns, and pattern variants. * A proposed workflow for using UI Patterns alongside an external Pattern Library like Pattern Lab. * Automatically discovering patterns from your pattern library with the UI Patterns Pattern Lab module. * A look at the Foundation Patterns theme and efforts to use UI Patterns in a contributed theme. Learning Objectives & Outcomes: This session is for front-end developers who have experimented with component based theming in Drupal 8 and have been looking to streamline the process. Magnolia Conference 2016 | Atomic Design, Living Style Guides and the Holy Grail

26:08
Adrian Heydecker and Marcel Kessler of Netcetera present the Hibiscus styleguide. Netcetera has created a living styleguide for Magnolia projects. In Hibiscus, there is one source for both Magnolia templates and the styleguide. This allows for fast and agile frontend development. Without knowing Java or running Tomcat, front end developers can create and change the styleguide. See the slides: http://de.slideshare.net/netceteragroup/atomic-design-living-style-guides-and-the-holy-grail/ Link to github repo: https://github.com/netceteragroup/hibiscus This presentation was given at Magnolia Conference Basel, June 7-9 2016.

Top 10 Samsung One UI features for Galaxy Note 9

06:00
Samsung One UI update to the Note 9 brings several updates, upgrades and features. While there are many new things, this video focuses on just a few things that I believe are more important. Lift to Wake With this feature activated, you don’t even have to press the power key for the Note 9 to scan. It does so as soon as you pick it up and realizes you want to start unlocking by scanning for your face and eyes. It’s a great time saver and probably the best way to unlock the Note 9. Schedule Always on Display Always on display can consume quite a bit of battery but it is also a great feature to have. With the new One UI update, the Note 9 allows you to either schedule the always on display to be on as per your requirement or you can just have it come up on screen when you tap on it. This is a great battery saving tip and you still get always on display at will. New Clock Styles New customization options are always welcome and Samsung One UI brings you a couple of them. Within settings, you could go into lock screen and then tap on clock styles to access new clock styles for lock screen as well as always on display. Speed up the UI Samsung’s user interface is notoriously slow because of it’s sluggish animations and screen transitions. It is slow and despite such a fast processor inside, the UI feels slow. However, with the One UI Samsung allows you to reduce animations to make the experience feel faster. You can do so by going to Settings, advanced features and enabling ‘Reduce animations feature. Full Screen Navigation Gesture With Android Pie on the Note 9, you can now get rid of the navigation buttons that used to eat up screen space as well as make navigation a slower interaction. With full screen navigation gestures, you can just use swipe gestures to go back, see recent apps as well as go home. Remember last mode on Camera Earlier, if you exit the camera and go back into the app - the camera app will always open on photo mode. However, you can now set the camera to remember the last known mode when closing the camera app - so the next time you open, the camera app will open on the last mode used. This setting can be found under camera settings in ‘edit camera modes’ option. Quick access to required edge panel The royalty-free music used in this video is 'Back To The Stars' by Nazar Rybak. UI/UX Developement Project Week [Lambda Part Time]

12:28
The first project week at Lambda School, UI/UX Development Project. I built this site from scratch using design files, and a style guide given by the school who was acting as my client. The project consisted of an MVP list that was required before demo day as well as a list of extra features the client wished to have if it was feasible. The tech I used in for the first run through of the project was HTML5, CSS3/LESS, and Javascript ES6. The under construction refactor utilizes HTML5, CSS3/LESS, Javascript ES6, and ReactJS/JSX Lambda School is an online coding school, with high success rate, feel free to ask me more if interested.
