English Travel Vocabulary: Planning a Trip

07:08
http://www.engvid.com Are you going to travel? Make sure you're prepared with the vocabulary you will need for your business trip or vacation. In this lesson, I'll teach you the English vocabulary you must know for travel -- from preparing your travel itinerary and making reservations, to getting your visas and boarding your flight. It is essential that you know this basic English travel vocabulary, because English is an international language. ESL students who are studying abroad will find these words very helpful. Even if you are not travelling to an English-speaking country, as a tourist, you will need to communicate with people at the airport, and at tourist attractions. Watch this lesson, take the quiz, and have a safe trip! http://www.engvid.com/english-travel-vocabulary-planning-a-trip/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. My name is Adam. Today, I'm talking about a very interesting topic because, for example, in Toronto right now, it's very, very cold. I'm thinking about travelling; I would love to go somewhere hot to get away from this winter. So, when I travel, I have, of course, to make travel arrangements. So here, we have a list of words, a list of things that you must think about before you go on a trip to a different country. We're going to go over each of these. We're going to start with "booking" and "reservation". Now, many people think that this is more or less the same, which it is. To book something or to reserve something means to keep a place, to keep your place. You book a flight, you book a hotel room. Generally speaking, you make a reservation at a restaurant; you make a booking with a travel agency or with a hotel, with accommodations, any type of accommodation. Speaking of, accommodations are hotel, motel, hostel, B&B, bed and breakfast; all kinds of accommodations. Make sure you have a booking before you go, so your place is safe, it's kept for you. When you arrive, it's all good. Next, when you're at your destination, the place you're going to, you might want to "rent" a car. Okay? Sorry, this is accommodation. One thing I wanted to also make sure - "accommodations", without the "s", "accommodation" means something different. Okay? "Accommodations" is where you're going to sleep. And you might want to "rent" a car. You can also "hire" a car. Means the same thing. British people generally use "hire" more, North Americans use "rent" more often. Next, you have to think about your "baggage". Suitcase, luggage, bags, anything you're carrying with you. You might have "check-in baggage". Sorry, I don't know if you can see this guy. "Check-in baggage" and "carry-on baggage". "Check-in baggage" means you give it to the airline, they put it under the plane, you pick it up at your destination. "Carry-on" means you carry on, so you carry it on your shoulder on to the plane. Okay? In your carry-on, you have to be careful, it has to be small. You can't have liquids because of security and all that stuff. So things that you can't put in your carry-on, you must put in your check-in baggage and give to the airline. Next, when you get to the airport, assuming you're flying, you will have to do a few things that concern the word "boarding". Before you board your plane, get on your plane - you will get a boarding pass that lets you pass through security and into the airport. On the boarding pass, you will see your "boarding time", this is when you get on the plane and your "boarding gate", the place in the airport where you're going to get on your plane before takeoff. Okay? We can also use this for a train. You board a train, you get a boarding pass with a boarding time, and generally a boarding platform. Okay? So "boarding", getting on your vehicle, whatever vehicle that might be. You will also generally need to get a "visa" to many countries. Now, a "visa" is something that you use to get into a country, it gives you permission to stay in that country. But be aware: many places, if you're going through another country... So, for example: I'm going to country "C" via country "B". "Via" means by way of or through. So I might need a "transit visa", means I can go there, switch planes and keep going on my journey. But I'm still in another country, I need a transit visa. Excuse me. Also, make sure you're prepared to spend money as soon as you get to your destination. If you're going to a different country, that country will but using a different "currency", type of money. In Canada, we have Canadian dollar. America has American dollar. Okay? For things like that. In Europe, you need the euro. So make sure you have some of the currency before you go, or purchase it at the airport or at the destination you're going to.

Welcome to my first experience with Southwest Airlines. I first heard of Southwest as a young man watching syndications of Airline on British TV (incidentally, we invented that show, with Easyjet starring first..). I was pretty impressed by Southwest and liked their individual style. They have free drinks and snacks and you don't have to pay for your bag, either. But one thing annoyed me - open seating. That causes anxiety among family groups who can't be sure they'll sit together, and it was clear there were a lot of dubious preboards from people who probably didn't qualify. Anyway, this was a short trip from Midway in Chicago to William P Hobby airport in Houston, and it was cheap, on time, and an interesting experience. Enjoy the report. Do you have any ideas for future trip reports? Something you've never seen on YouTube before? Why not suggest it to me in the comments? Minimalist Packing Tips & Hacks - Travel Light With Only Carry-On Luggage!

Best carry-on packing tips + Get a free audio book download & 30 day free trial from Audible at http://www.audible.com/exploringalternatives or text code, "exploringalternatives" to 500-500 if you're in the US. In this video we're tackling the confusing world of carry-on packing. What is the true size of a carry-on suitcase? What can you bring on board? How to pack like a minimalist? We even do a test-pack to show you what we'd pack on a long term trip. We are big fans of traveling light with only the essentials to carry around. Travel doesn't just end at the airport. Whatever you pack for a trip has to be hauled around in taxis, on the bus, on the train, in and out of hotels and hostels. With some careful planning, you can have a great trip with small, easy to handle luggage. A few other reasons why we love carry-on packing is because you can save money by not paying to check a bag, you don't have to wait for your luggage to unload from the plane and waste time at the carousel, and you don't have to worry about losing your luggage or having someone take it by mistake. Here are a few TSA (Travel Security Administration) websites to help you figure out what you can, and can't bring on board. It varies by airline and by country. Be sure to check them out after this video and stay subscribed to my channel there is a lot of fun content coming your way. When talking about how to fly cheap there are a few factors that you have to consider. One of them is where you are traveling from and where you are traveling to and how flexible are you with your departure airport and destination airport. The second thing is how flexibel are you with your date of travel. The more flexibility the easier it is to find cheap airline tickets. Another key factor to finding cheap flight is actually to find the best booking sites. But really the secret to cheap flights is combining all of those factors into one magic booking strategy. If you want to fly cheap you’ve got to be smart. So as I mentioned flexibility when booking airline tickets is one of the key factors in actually succeeding in finding the cheapest flights. That in term means finding the best booking sites means finding the most flexibel booking sites. There are some good options out there like flights.google.com or kayak.com. They let you enter 3-5 departure airports and 3-5 destination airports and you can be fairly flexible on the travel date. but for what we are looking for that is not good enough. Also many of the booking sites don’t show you all of the airfares because some of the fares are so discounted that the booking site wouldn’t get any commissions anymore. So found another secret to cheap airfare. Finding those fares that not even the booking sites have. Well I stumbled upon a website that combines all those factors into one beautiful beautiful packet . WORST Flight of the year: BLUE AIR trip report, Birmingham - Cluj/Napoca, Boeing 737-800

Thanks for finding my video and pressing play! This is the worst flight experience I’ve had...if not ever, then certainly since I launched my channel a little over two years ago. I’m an enthusiast and by default I enjoy flying. I’m positive about travel and although I try to remain honest, I’ll always be upbeat about what I’m doing where I can. After all, nobody wants to watch some guy flying round the world telling people week in week out how much it all sucks. But today’s report is an exception, because this was undeniably a completely rubbish experience and Blue Air don’t really care in my opinion. I won’t waffle on in long paragraphs, just read this list of why it sucked: BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT: - Airport/station shuttle not working. No staff to explain why or how to get to the airport. Found my own way after giving up. No signposted route from the shuttle so it took me 30 minutes to walk trailing my bag. - Awful, awful security line. Never seen it so bad at Birmingham, a normally good airport - and an airport I would normally advocate for. No idea what the issue was. Spent £5 to go fast track. Irritating. BLUE AIR: - Check in is contracted out to a third party. Agent wasn’t sure if my bag would be through checked to Bucharest, my final destination or whether I’d need to collect and recheck in Cluj. So I wasted 30 minutes in Cluj watching all the bags come out before concluding that it was indeed through checked. - Boarding nonsense. Blue Air don’t have a monopoly on this trick, but I really really hate “boarding” and then waiting on a freezing cold/boiling hot airbridge while the aircraft actually gets ready. That’s plain inhospitable - keep us in the terminal where it is room temperature and don’t wind people up doing this! - Tired cabin with obvious lack of maintenance on an older airframe. - Inexplicably small storage net on the seat backs. - Some of the worst scratches on a window I’ve ever seen. This made filming very hard when the sun was at certain angles. This meant I’ve had to make a decision not to use significant portions of footage including the takeoff roll (which is normally a mandatory part of my videos). Sorry if you like the takeoffs; I do too, but you couldn’t see anything and the footage was totally unusable. I don’t put stuff out that’s unwatchable. - DIDN’T GET WHAT I PAID FOR - my meal wasn’t loaded. That was my dinner, and I’d paid for the meal as part of my fare. The crew did not even seem aware I was supposed to have a meal even though it’s in my booking confirmation and AVML was printed on my boarding card confirming this (for geeks: yes, AVML is Asian vegetarian meal but budget airlines use these codes to just denote “this guy’s ordered a standard meal”). - Inappropriate material in an inflight magazine which will be read by children. Very surprised to see that if I’m honest. I found it hilarious, but also recognise that stuff ought not to be in an inflight magazine... - Had a seat change without prior notification on my connecting flight, CLJ-OTP. Window to aisle. Luckily that was not a trip I planned to make a video on but I hate aisle seats and given my fare was top whack and included “preferential” seating it sucked more than usual. - Went to complain at Blue Air’s website. The complaint field on the contact form has space for just 140 characters, the same as an old style Twitter message. Yep, condense the above into 140 characters to complain. This is the worst part in my opinion. It sums up the whole experience. Maddening, illogical, and not customer friendly. I actively chastise people who turn their nose up at budget carriers but this poor experience was a shock to the system. I have lots of videos coming out, including in midweek in the run up to New Year. Make sure you have your notifications set! 🛎 Enjoy the report. _____________________________________ Do you have any ideas for future trip reports? Something you've never seen on YouTube before? (NYSE: SAVE) is an American ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. It is the 8th largest commercial airline in the US. Spirit operates scheduled flights throughout the United States and in the Caribbean, Mexico, Latin America, and South America. The airline operates bases at Atlantic City, Chicago–O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, and Las Vegas. Spirit follows an ultra low-cost fare model that decouples elements and perks that are often included in the base ticket price of traditional carriers. As of June 2015, It maintains crew bases at Atlantic City, Chicago–O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, and Las Vegas.[43] In March 2018, Spirit Airlines will begin non-stop flights from Richmond International Airport to Florida.

Using a Bullet Journal for Trip Planning: Tips for Packing, Schedules, and Organization

07:27
There are so many apps for every part of life now, and travel apps may be the most saturated market of all. Apps for flight check-in, tracking, lodging, food, drink, meet-ups, and so much more. In this video I show you how I bypass many of those apps (or at least don't rely on them) to get where I need to be. I use two different bullet journal layouts when traveling - one is more category focused, e.g. clothes, flight information, addresses, and work gear. The other is the normal weekly layout for meetings, tasks, and notes. What's important to note is that I'm not getting rid of the apps - I still use Southwest to check in, Airbnb to book lodging, Lyft to get around, and Yelp to find restaurants. But I'm still writing everything down to have a non-app backup and to lock in to my mind what I'm doing and who I'm doing it with. There are studies that back this up too, most notable (pun intended) is "The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking" by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer. http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0956797614524581 Basically, using apps impairs processing and memory because there's a level of "off-loading" the information to another source. While this is handy for quick retrieval of information (searching), it doesn't help most people actually learn or retain information like writing does. Trip Report - Thomson B787-8 Dreamliner Manchester (MAN) - Bridgetown Barbados (BGI)

20:08
On Sunday 19th February 2017 we travelled with Thomson onboard one of their 787-8 dreamliners from Manchester EGCC to Bridgetown, Barbados. After arriving at Manchester airport terminal 2 we headed to the Thomson check in area. We were able to use premium check in so it made our check in process much quicker and easier. Once checked in we headed through to security which was the longest and most annoying part of the airport process, taking 30 minutes to pass through. Boarding commenced roughly around 45 minutes before departure we was quite early however we were made to wait on the jetbridge. However being one of the first people to board you see the cabin with no one in, offering a good perspective of the cabin. The cabin itself was very spacious and open with the huge windows on the 787 making the cabin feel brighter. The seats themselves were again very spacious and comfortable set out in a 3-4-3 layout. We were seated in an 'extra legroom seat' which does what it states on the tin, gives you extra legroom. There was a noticeable difference in legroom which was a great benefit and added more comfort as the flight went on being able to stretch out that extra bit. The IFE system onboard was very impressive with a great variety of latest and classic movies along with tv programmes, games and music. The meal was nothing special however was adequate.A drinks service was made several times throughout the flight and the free drinks on long haul services are a great feature by Thomson. The crew onboard were very attentive and the service flowed throughout the flight. Overall it was a very pleasant flight onboard the 787, an aircraft and airline we will definitely be flying on again soon. TRIP REPORT | Air France Economy Class flight to Paris | Airbus A319 | Travel Vlog

49:36
TRIP REPORT VLOG ►Watch all our TRIP REPORTS, Link in comments section below. Part 1/3 An Air France Flight Review (Trip Report) of our flight onboard an Air France Airbus A319 from Copenhagen Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. This video covers all stages of the flight from the arrival at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) where the viewer sees the Check-in area for our Air France flight and then is given a tour of Copenhagen Airport´s departure area as we make our way through the airport to our departure gate A20. Our Air France Economy Class flight to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris the begins boarding, and we follow the aircraft pushback process and then the taxiing out to our take-off runway and include the takeoff. Once in the air we show the viewer the Air France cabin, have a look at the Air France seats and legroom in Economy Class onboard an Air France A319, we look at the seat belts, The Air France inflight magazine, the Air France Inflight Duty Free Shopping magazine and the Air France onboard Safety Card for their Airbus A318 and Airbus A319. To our surprise on this short-haul Air France Economy Class flight to Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport, we were all offered a complimentary Inflight Meal, actually an Inflight Snack and a complimentary Inflight Drink. We than begin our descent towards Paris through some very turbulent weather conditions and finally our Air France flight lands at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The viewer then follows our long but very interesting taxi through this huge French Airport, we are even like enough to see the Air France Concorde. We hope that you will enjoy this Air France Economy Class Flight Review of our flight onboard a Airbus A319 between Copenhagen Airport and Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Air France is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance (Airline Alliance). OUR IMPRESSIONS: - The Air France cabin crew was friendly and professional from the start to end of the flight. - The complimentary inflight snack and drink was a positive surprise for a European short haul flight. This small gesture will ensure that we would pick Air France over one that does not offer the same service if the ticket prices were similar. - The Air France Economy Class legroom (short haul flights on Airbus A319) is minimal for those of us over 6 feet tall, however it is bearable on short haul flights such as this 2 hour flight. VERDICT: Despite the long delay to disembark the plane (owing to the weather not Air France) we both agreed that this was an enjoyable short haul European flight. This was the first of three connection flights (two flights were with Air France) and all our baggage was available when we reached our destination. We would gladly fly with Air France again, and do hope that it will continue offering all passengers a complimentary beverage and snack in the future, an excellent and very appreciated customer service. #tripreport #flightreview #AirFrance #Economyclass #travel #travelvlogs Watch all our Travel Vlogs here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TravellerYT/playlists?flow=grid&view=1 Wiki writes about Air France, "Air France formally Société Air France, S.A., stylized as AIRFRANCE, is the French flag carrier headquartered in Tremblay-en-France, (north of Paris). Trip Report: Southwest Airlines (Economy Class) Los Angeles - San Francisco | Boeing 737-700

13:43
Get £25 off your first Air BnB stay! https://abnb.me/e/RO0OXUi3pQ TWITTER: https://www.twitter.com/avctrips INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/avctrips Thanks for taking time to watch this fully comprehensive review today, which features a flight in Southwest Airlines from Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) on a Boeing 737-700. Airline: Southwest Airlines Aircraft: Boeing 737-700 Flight Number: WN1069 Class of Travel: Economy Class Registration: N228WN Seat: 16F Scheduled Flight Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Actual Flight Time: 48 minutes. Filmed on: iPhone 7 Date Filmed: October 2018 Notes: My 3rd flight on Southwest and my 3rd on the Boeing 737-700. My full routing for the day was SEA-OAK-LAX-SFO. My thoughts: This was my 3rd flight of the day on Southwest and I was impressed how they were going against the grain compared to traditional cost cutting measures employed by most airlines around the world these days. The crew made a really good impression on me even though this was a short flight. Friendly, enthusiastic and really look like they enjoyed their jobs and this was the same on all 3 flights that I did, that really shows a good company culture. One saw my filming and even asked “Do you need me to film anything for you?” Great to see. I also find the open seating where you can sit where you like, really works in your favour as long as you check in early! Nice to see an airline doing it different and making a fun experience. The good summed up: - Not one, but TWO free checked bags on all fares! - Free snacks and beverages handed out on all flights. - Enthusiastic crew, who looked like they were having fun while at work (See above). - Clean aircraft. - Friendly ground staff. - Free entertainment streaming and free messaging through whatsapp/imessage. - Consistency across all 3 of my flights! - Open seating. You can sit where you like, just make sure you check in early and get on the aircraft early! The improvements: - One thing I did notice is that there were no larger food items available for purchase on my flights. This doesn’t worry me, but it may for some on longer 3 hour sectors who haven’t had a chance to eat in the terminal. For what I paid, I had a lot thrown in. No complaints at all and a good impression left on me. I’d fly Southwest again any day. I hope this little summary helps display the little details which can’t be covered in the video!
