The Best of Sicily
© 2000 Rick Steves' Europe | After going fishing for anchovies off Cefalù, we land in rough-and-tumble Palermo. Marveling at the eerie skeletons in a Capuchin crypt, airy mosaics of Monreale, enchanting ruins of Segesta, and fiery rim of Mount Etna, we enjoy the best of Sicily.

Discover The Beautiful Sicily!
Sicily - The Heart of The Mediterranean - http://sicily.co.uk Sicily is the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and has been the cradle of culture for the most important western civilisations over the past 3000 years. Its wonderful variety of ashes, traditions and cultures, transform Sicily into the impressive and magnificent island it is now. Greeks, Romans, Goths, Byzantines and Arabs are just a few of the civilisations whose influences are still visible as you walk across the evocative corners of the Island. Ruins and masterpieces will enchant, taking you back to a time of dining with Romans and debating with Greek philosophers in the “for”. What is Palermo really like? // Vlog
Before visiting any city, I like to quickly read a little about the safety and areas to avoid. I adopted this practice after ending up in what was apparently the worst part of Athens. I know not to believe everything I read on the internet, but you have to start somewhere. When reading about Palermo, I was nervous to read many accounts of peoples scary experiences and of course talk of the mafia. I was pleasantly surprised when we found ourselves in Palermo, how warm the people were (even though we don't speak italian), and how safe I actually felt (even though we were staying in one of the supposed "areas to avoid.") Our airbnb host was wonderful and I found that most of my interactions with people were playful and light. We did get to visit the Ballaro Market, one of three famous markets in the city, which was definitely my favorite part. Enjoy and share with your friends! Travel Series - Sicily
Sicily, the beautiful island with 3000 years of cultural heritage and unbelievably varied and beautiful. The largest island of the Mediterranean fascinates its visitors by its diversity. But not only the landscape attracts the travellers. Where the nature is so generous, where citruses, almonds and fig trees bloom and where vegetables, corn and fruit of all kinds is of such a high quality, there Sicily offers luxurious and imaginative menus of typical dishes and product that cannot be compared to any other region.

Sicily Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and the most diverse region in Italy, a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures.Catania, in the northeast of the island, is Sicily’s second largest city that has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. It is believed that Greek settlers from Chalkidi founded it and some centuries later, it was conquered by the Romans and later, the Arabs brought the city a new wave of prosperity.Noto is a charming town with around 20,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto’s historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Cathedrale Di San Nicolo also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996.A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius.Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it ‘Marsal-Allah’, ‘God’s Harbor’. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860.In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than 800 years, has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop of Palermo and the Norman King, William.Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. The Messina Strait, the famous Greek theatre of Taormina, the archeological sites of Segesta and Selinunte, the marvellous Catania, the unique monastery and temple of Monreale, the picturesque Cefalu and Ragusa are all worth taking a look on the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. The romantic Sicily, an island very rich in monuments and natural beauties, enchants every visitor. Let us take a walk on the streets of the capital, Palermo, let us refresh ourselves on the beach of Mondello, take a slide in the famous Citta del Mare, and go to the ever-foggy Erice using the cableway. We can enjoy the sicilian blood-oranges, drink a capuccino among the walls of Syracuse, and finally, take a walk to the still active Etna volcano. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Sicily Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is the most diverse region in Italy,a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures. Throughout the history of Sicily there have been many battles, rulers, cultures and religions. Prior to Roman rule both the Greeks and the Carthagians fought against each other. Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Our day trip to the top of Volcano Etna Sicily Italy
Info from Wikipedia: Mount Etna (Italian: Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin:Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in theProvince of Catania, between Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, currently 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions.Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhonwas trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it. Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.[4] In June 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008)five distinct craters—the Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the Bocca Nuova, and the Southeast Crater Complex (2). Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. In contrast, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred metres altitude, close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions.

Sicily | Italy | Travel Video
I recently came back from a trip to Sicily, an Italian island. This island has some stunning scenery like the Alcantara Gorge and Mount Etna. Definitely worth a visit for the scenery alone. We stayed in a town called Riposto near Catania which was lovely and next to the sea. However, the roads were very narrow, which is to be expected. There was also a lot of litter everywhere, which was sad to see. But despite this it was a lovely island to visit.
