Thoughts on Abramelin

Why are people so secretive about the Abramelin operation? Was I disappointed/disillusioned by it? I was asked this after my last video posting and here i attempt an answer in 15 minutes that really just scratches the surface, but does say something about the role of secrecy in magical culture

You are a great story teller. And I see much of my own long weary path reflected in your very sincere words. All our lives we play mind games, either consciously or otherwise. No matter what happens, remember that you, somewhere, maybe some place you are unaware of and may never know, are always running the show. Have you ever watched a kitten playing with a ball of wool. It will walk over it, as if it has not seen it, and then flick it with its back foot. As it moves it turns around and chases it, as if it was unaware of the source of the movement. The greatest lesson I ever learned, standing above my eyeballs, deep in stunning amazingness, was my absolute power of self delusion. When your processor burns out, your PC is fucked.
Tim Meagher (2 months ago)
Honestly, I would not recommend people playing with this stuff out of a curiosity, just so you know, ripping your layers down to your core is not a pleasant experience, and confronting the monster within is a harrowing understanding of the self, jungian psychology and occult magic are intertwined, as above, so below. A lot of people through that around lightly. It is more, as above - the material, exterior external self that I project to the world, of who I think I am and what and who I surround myself with, my house, my clothes, my car, my projected life, so below - the immaterial, my inner self, the monster within, the subconscious, the abyss, the depths of self, the fears. Then one step below is where you step through the veil, a veil comes down between the 3d world everyone lives in, this plane, and the world that sits on top, with the beings that inhabit that world, the only religious texts I've come across any description is the Koran, beings of smokeless flame, its a bad description, thi K more tall thin beings wearing cloaks that look like a galaxy that are darker than the darkest night, a black so black that fmdeeper than any black you've ever seen, a black that make ordinary black a substance but this black is nothing, the beings within these cloak are made of a blue luminous lights, yet are transparent, they are 8ft to 9ft tall, and they glide rather than walk, as a child I used to think of them as monks, I remember seeing them pace like monks outside my bedroom, as if in meditative prayer. I've seen them my whole life. It took me 30 years to realise they were not evil beings rather, vthey were powerful, awe inspiring and as a result frightening. I don't know about this pathway walking, spending time visualising forests, I've never experienced magic like that. Also my experiences have been shared when they are happening, not everyone see it, but they can feel them. These experiences have happened when I'm with 2 other people, to 40 other people, so it's not just in my head l, and they've left people really questioning what they thought they knew.

What I practiced was not so much a "ripping your layers down to your core" as a "letting go " of those layers. It actually left them intact - I am still an educated English Man  etc etc, but not attached to those labels. It is not so easy for media, sales folk and governments to manipulate me by playing on those labels as it would have been in the past. What you describe is clearly a very powerful process, and I can only suggest that it would be safer to do something like I suggested to strengthen the core before practicing what you describe
Tim Meagher (2 months ago)
Also, this is an ice video. If you know anything about 9ft blue luminous light being that behave like monks any texts on these guys would be helpful.

Although I’ve endeavored to be secretly protective of my interests and practices, I’ve also experienced an almost miraculous lack of awareness of what I may do on the part of people with whom I have lived (husband, children). They were/are completely oblivious, even if I’ve explained what I was doing, as if It weren’t happening. I marvel at that.

Hi Ramsey, do you remember what the film was with the pathworking scene?
Ramsey Dukes (2 months ago)
Thanks - the Wikipedia account describes the scene well under the heading "production": 'Koepp felt that many hypnosis scenes in films are "most skipped by", so he came up with the idea of allowing viewers see through Bacon's point-of-view as he undergoes hypnosis to make the concept fresh."

Could it have been "What Lies Beneath?". I seem to recall that the heroine went to a psychiatrist for advice, and was hypnotised?

Greetings from across the pond! I, too, don't particularly like discussing my results and such topics with most people, including my wife and children. After all, in the original manuscript and the S.L. MacGregor translation, it states in both, in book 1, that in general, the operation should indeed be kept private. Like you said, it's a very large stripping away of the idea that you yourself are important, and instead that everything else in the world around you is. It took me several years of oration and dedication to get what I wanted...but by then what I wanted changed, to more of what it should be, and that is in service to others and to the Almighty. Thank you from sharing, blessings!
Ramsey Dukes (1 year ago)
Thank you for that. I am just in the process of preparing my diary for publication, and unsure how much personal detail to include – although it does not feel so personal 40 years later! People do seem very interested and, at a risk of disappointing some, it is worth letting people know just how challenging it is in our connected world (even more so now) to cut oneself off and follow a path chosen by oneself rather than imposed by society.
Nasty Infinity (1 year ago)
I believe they recently discovered an earlier manuscript of the Abramelin where the ritual actually goes on for a year and a half!
Nasty Infinity (1 year ago)
I wrote that before you mentioned it! haha

can someone teach me more about this book?, i really want to learn more.
Ramsey Dukes (1 year ago)
If you Google it you will find the Mathers translation that I used, but I do recommend the new translation (link below) for a fuller story. I am currently preparing my Anbramelin Diary for publication - that will give a better idea about what it is like to actually do the work.

superb....rare these days to find people with actual cognitive understanding of such works...it is not our place to usher people in, what is lost will be found and what is found will be lost.........

Upon completion of the Abramelin do you still control your familiars and ask them for favors? Do you feel the 6 month cycle was merely a taste of the true experience the Abramelin has to offer at the full 18 moons? What was it like for you to meet your HGA? If you didn't already know the "Abramelin Operation" is the so called lost "Seal of Solomon" as described in the Bible which allowed for Solomon to command an army of demons (familiars). 3 jinn are trapped under the 3 brass vessels (genie lamps) and those are your 3 wishes. The Key and the lesser key of Solomon are used in conjunction with the Book of Abramelin. Tell us more about your experience it sounds interesting.

+Ramsey Dukes Makes complete sense now. The same thing happened to Aleister Crowley whom also only performed the 6 month ritual compared to the 18. Shortly after one of his many mistresses died of uterine cancer. I agree it is very dangerous to practice the magic of God. One day I hope to be in a position to do the Operation but I do not want anything to go wrong.

After it finished my life became turmoil and took 7 years to settle down. For that reason and others i did not work with djinni or use those vessels –focused more on inner development.

hello sir ..i'm really interested on the abramelin operation...i still have to read the book tho..can you please explain what this operation all about? the benefits of calling the HGA and summoning the 4 dukes of hell etc...? what would a person benefit from this ritual? thanks...i only did the Lesser ritual of the pentagram
Zachwap (1 year ago)
thank you for the response sir.. definately worth trying
Ramsey Dukes (1 year ago)
I'm busy trying to edit and write introductions for my Abramelin diary to be published later this year, and that would give you a much fuller answer. For myself the key thing was to dedicate 6 months of ones life for a spiritual quest. That is, in itself, a powerful thing to do and far from easy in our cluttered and bureaucratic society. Doing that had a profound effect in my life, but it is not one that is easy to explain because it is so individual.
MegaE5150 (1 year ago)
I will be attempting this ritual next week.  Ready or not.  I hope its everything I expect it to be and I hope I can Attain to my HGA.  Wish me luck.

howd it go
Ramsey Dukes (1 year ago)
I wish you more than luck: foresight to make a careful vow that you really can commit to; perseverance when you want to hate yourself for many little failures; detachment to see that failure can sometimes be a better teacher than success; alertness to the changes that really matter. And good luck!

+Ramsey Dukes This is my first time reading/watching something that is Occult in nature.. and being taken seriously. I will look up what you have suggested sir, and thank you for replying.
Ramsey Dukes (1 year ago)
I would start with the McGregor Mathers version to understand the format I used. If you get serious then I would recommend the newer German version that gives a more extended retirement.

The real stuff is not on the Market. What we can buy today are Comic entertainment books from Kindergarden. Real magic can not be written. It only can be explored with Spiritual Excercises. Tibetan Magic Meditation may be much more effective and powerful…The reason, why the Communists tried to holocaust them all…
No-Wun (1 year ago)
A lot of the most magical books are the most common. We're just so used to them, we don't even think anything of it. I'm telling ya, it's all around, up, down, left, right. You just have to see. "Row, Row, Row your boat gently down a stream. Merrily merrily merrily merrily. Life is but a dream."
No-Wun (1 year ago)
raginald7 Mars I think if you're too logical about magic, you will miss the magic all together. Fundamentally, it is about feeling, it about connection, it is about your relationship with reality, with the dimensions, the elements, the self and the divine. Anything can be a ritual, dancing can be a ritual, art can be a ritual. In this plane of existence not everything appears as it actually is. A random looking squiggly line for example, with the meaning and energy behind it, could be a sigil of great power.. And almost everyone would have no clue, they'd just see a random line. They're not aware of how it operates on their subconscious. At the core of magic, we discover that everything is magical. Most people just want tricks and miracles, but the deeper you go, you realize there's always synchronicity. That there is always a miracle and that miracle is ever-present and eternal.
raginald7 Mars (1 year ago)
yes! I do it! - mostly-wrong...

I very much appreciate your account of your experience, who can discount that . I am just at the very beginning of my research as to how to approach doing something similar ( although think because of my sex and age I am suppose to not even attempt however feel ready and strong in purpose ). Thanks for putting yourself out there so to speak !
dermusikman (2 years ago)
The Mathers translation (I haven't read any other) was emphatic to work within the religion of one's upbringing. I'm curious, as you've stated in your videos that you were raised a rationalist (and, I presume, materialist?), in what religious context you performed the operation? I wonder what influence that may have had, if any, in your results? I learned of you through your RuneSoup interview, and I'm enjoying your channel thus far! Cheers!
dermusikman (2 years ago)
Thank you for the response!
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
Deciding how to do it was a problem! At the time my strongest inclination was to Taoism, which is non-theistic, so how to adapt? I explored the traditional angel-system for an idea of my HGA. The book gives quite specific guidelines for the type of prayer, so I directed them strongly to my HGA rather than another deity. Then my meditations were very much based on Taoist alchemy and Crowley's Yoga, which provided a very simple (but tough) framework. As to influence on results... I would need to go back to my diary and ponder that
Rhys Bevan-John (2 years ago)
I understand completely when you say "In not wanting to talk about it too much, it's like wanting to keep something precious." I have had some experiences that have been very significant to me, and trying to talk about them to the wrong person (or outside the proper emotional container) would be like sharing tender moments with a lover and then talking lewdly about it with friends. There is a trust that is broken that changes you and prevents you from entering the same space in the same way again. Developing a strong enough psychic/emotional structural integrity *not* to talk about such things out of turn was a big part of my development. Your 'Little Book of Demons' is on a syllabus that I am working through. I have enjoyed it very much and it is a great pleasure to see you share your thoughts and lectures here you youtube. Thank you sir!
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
Thank you for that!  I have suggested something along these lines in my videos of magic and the individual: that if you share spiritual or paranormal experiences too freely they will lose their magical power and yet can gain the religious power of a shared experience. Loss of magic can be with gain in reputation – not a great trade!
fishlips54 (2 years ago)
Serious question: I performed the long version of the Abramelin Ritual, I did not get the HGA experience, but I did develop myasthenia gravis about 6 months into the ritual, and at the end (of the ritual) my life was turned 'upside-down" (major changes etc.). Could you share your thoughts on my experiences? TY
Nick Smith (2 years ago)
+fishlips54 sorry, shouldve put rhetorical, and that you should just take those things into account.
fishlips54 (2 years ago)
+Ramsey Dukes Good advice. At the end of the ritual, I needed to move and go take care of my dad, who is dying of cancers. So I will be waiting until he is gone before any redo. Until then, I will be studying and meditating.
fishlips54 (2 years ago)
+Nick Smith 54. "pure" enough. Healthy at the start, 6 months in is when I got diseased. Not too demanding.
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
+fishlips54 That's a good start, but usually best to take a message like that as the start of a dialogue rather than a final answer – so work with it. Re-doing the ritual is a really big deal. I would love to do that, but cannot see it happening in this incarnation! My instinct would be to wait seven years, but that is just what I would need. I would certainly wait for some feeling of "completion".
Nick Smith (2 years ago)
+fishlips54 your age? is your body "pure"? (no mind or body altering substances, no diseases) did you prepare before you began? (a healthy body = a healthy mind) are there negative points in your life? (divorce, death of a loved one, negative attitude, etc.) were you too demanding to said spirits? a fantastic book that helped set me on a positive path is "I am the open door". crowley left the ritual due to the belief of the ritual was to summon demons, not guardian angels
Dana Varahi (2 years ago)
Thank you for sharing this. What you describe really resonates with me. Abramelin Operation as great disillusionment makes perfect sense. I had a few heartfelt laughs listening to this video. I am 5 months into Abramelin and I also find it very humbling and sobering. In my experience so far the process of disillusionment runs parallel with a growing sense of wonder, expansion and compassion. It's one hell of a ride. :D I did listen to your other videos 'In search of the miraculous'. It's so great to hear your account of Abramelin. I would really appreciate if you could say a bit more and I will definitely read your book/diary once its out. I would love to hear your take on the Holy Guardian Angel and the 4 demon princes. I read your 'Little Book of Demons' and I am sure your ideas about HGA and the 4 princes are worth sharing. Thanks again for the videos.
Dana Varahi (2 years ago)
+Ramsey Dukes Thanks. I do experience the brilliance and clarity you describe. My mind is exploding with ideas and I feel really inspired. I did not set myself a definite end date. Few weeks ago I wasn't sure if I will manage to carry on and now I feel like I could go on forever. Society with its rules really tries to keep us all in line and keep our mouth shut. As if there is nothing else to life than to work and breed. It feels really great to brake free from all that.
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
+Dana Varahi CONGRATULATIONS! 5 months in! The world took on a sort of brilliance and clarity of experience in the final months – I had never felt more alive. In today's society there is very little chance to define a routine and lifestyle for yourself and not be dictated by work, bureaucracy, laws and other social pressures. This is truly empowering.
Robert Plimer (2 years ago)
HGA experience and secrecy. I totally agree that magical culture is very individualistic. Pathworking - when I was taught this 20+ yeas ago it was called 'guided fantasy'. On a basic level, do you think it is merely a process of creative occultism? I like the idea that of the surprising things that do 'appear' that can then be experienced - did you find it the same in the Abramelin working? Did nothing appear - even projected symbols? However, you make a a clever reference to 'Knowledge' - the new version is as you say extended. Do you believe it is through reflection - after the ritual, on specific 'memories' that become important? Yes, as you hint, it is in those small meaningful mementos that are the key...thanks again...the video cuts off rather abruptly?
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
+Robert Plimer Thanks, Robert. In the 3rd of the Search for the Miraculous videos I say a bit more about my Abramelin experiences that will help answer your questions
James Staples V (2 years ago)
I really appreciated the stripping away of the self which you discussed, I was wondering if you had worked with any of Christopher Hyatts materials and how you felt about them. I began with Abramelein- but found it... not... reliable? too redious upon extra tedious, with very little result. Probably my issues and fault, but did find better practices which had better results. Thanks for allowing me to find you!
Ramsey Dukes (2 years ago)
+James Staples VI It is ages since I read Hyatt: I never worked directly with his material, but we shared other infliuencers like Israel Regardie, so my work may have overlapped with his.  When I started Abramelim I was working with Crowley's Yoga, so so tedium as "the final frontier", the ultimate challenge etc! Boring to wholeness, anybody?

Mr. Dukes, It is a pleasure. Yes, what a mighty, strange, wonderful world we happen to occupy... for the moment. In the name of strangeness, I am here. We share many interests and familiarities. Provoked to learn as much from those savvy as possible..... for time is not on our side, the Great Work no longer whispers, it roars. Time for much fun... I will be among the audience and would love to exchange more as the context suits. Thank you for your work, Marc Theiler

Also telling of such experiences gets lots of other people who think they have had that gnosis
